Ahn Dayoung 2nd Studio Album [WHERE IS MY FRIEND?] Vinyl

The novel *Finnegan's Wake* by the great Irish writer James Joyce spread through my heart like a red sun—no, an orange sunrise. This is because the act of listening to all eleven tracks of Ahn Da-young's second full-length album, *WHERE IS MY FRIEND?*, and then returning to the "intro" overlaps with the structure of this book. The album's "intro" connects to the outro of the final track, *EASY*. The title of Part IV Chapter 1, the final chapter of *Finnegan's Wake*, is also "Return." The final sentence of the work is "One long, one lonely, one last, one loved, one long one," where "he" refers to "THE" in English. This "THE" connects to the book's first line, "The river runs." The next sentence begins with, "Passing the Cathedral of Eve and Adam..." According to Kim Jong-geon, an emeritus professor at Korea University who published a collection of the *Finnegans Wake* I Ching—considered a controversial work due to its extreme complexity—the reversal of Eve and Adam alludes to the "reverse flow of water." This also refers to the "recurrence of history" by the Italian philosopher Vico, which states that "rivers flow in reverse twice a day, night and day." In the title track of her first solo EP, *Waves, Smoke, River* (2014), Ahn Da-young constantly murmured, "I wish I had a so wide river." Now, Ahn Da-young possesses the courage to return atop that river. She selected "reincarnation" and "Karma" as the key keywords for the intro of *WHERE IS MY FRIEND?*. This is a protest against concluding this album, which she has worked on for three years, by fixating it on a specific idea. The repetition of the chorus within the intro is a metaphorical landscape of life as a turning wheel. In *Finnegans Wake*, "wake" means staying up all night. The novel deals with the one-night dream of a pub owner on the outskirts of Dublin. Ahn Da-young's *WHERE IS MY FRIEND?* also sounds and reads like a long dream of a single day. It is a life that passes through the busyness of midday, racing with scurrying steps across the asphalt because one does not want to be easily forgotten like yesterday on crumbling ground; through the "grave of light"—a nightmare that arrives at night—to face an orange sunrise; and finally, becoming detached once again, humming a tune that abandoning someone is easy.

Ahn Da-young's musical world is mythical. Most protagonists in myths left reality due to a sense of loss, eventually returned, and found answers by drifting in the process. Ahn Da-young's previous albums—her first EP 'Waves, Smoke, River', her first full-length album 'ANTIHERO' (2020), and her second EP 'Burning Letter' (2021)—follow a similar structure. In this album as well, she recalls lost friends and searches for the existence and meaning of friendship while drifting aimlessly. However, there are no right answers in life, and life does not flow in the desired direction. Ahn Da-young, too, worries and fears that she may not be able to accurately express the truth she knows. This leads to collapse ('Happy Asphalt'), a sense of alienation ('echoborn'), or cynicism ('Yawn / Survive 101'). Yet, despite this, Ahn Da-young's musical world does not perish by ultimately enduring contempt and refusing to succumb to disillusionment. To bid a "farewell worthy of your name long forgotten" and to define oneself as someone "unable to ruin even a single common lyric" ('you can change nothing') is a determination to make a solitary choice, even if thrown into a tragic situation like Antigone. The various confusions captured in the album serve as the minimum time required to fully reveal oneself. Possessing a "painterly talent" that visualizes auditory perception through lyrics and sound—including the immediate imagery evoked by song titles such as 'grave of light,' 'tunnel,' and 'Orange Sunrise'—Anda Young's music thus leaves behind a compositional style of oral myth, a trace of life's convulsions.

Another point worth examining in Ahn Da-young's latest album is that her exceptional talent has secured a path toward greater universality. With pop elements more deeply infused, this album offers a wider reach to a more diverse audience. Through the band *We Are in the Endless Afterglow*, known as a pioneer of post-rock, Ahn established an irregular, dreamy atmosphere, and has filled her discography primarily with alternative rock and pop featuring multi-layered sounds. Once again, unlike lyrics that could easily become too muddled, the use of sound and chorus is excellent—creating a sense of distant yet overwhelming emotion—and is faster-paced and brighter. The sense of unity, where her vocal style—whether in Korean or English—is appropriately blurred to pique the ear and function as a single sound, has become even more solid. "Tunnel" is pop itself. "Yawn / Survive 101" is also well-executed using popular grammar, featuring impressive repetitions and variations of guitar riffs that oscillate between melodicism and an unstable atmosphere, all layered with short singing raps that possess just the right rhythm. Ahn Da-young, who has previously convinced enthusiasts why her work is good in terms of message and sound, has now reached a level where she responds to the demands of listeners who want to know why her music is good overall. While technical skill certainly plays a part, this converges on an affection for music grounded in insight into humanity and the world. It is ultimately connected to the act of shedding karma. Singing that it was too easy to abandon you while humming a tune ("easy") is a kind of pledge to create relationships where one no longer feels uneasy. Even if we do not know each other's despair in our respective worlds—scorched yesterday, the breath exhaled behind the lights—when we listen to Ahn Da-young's songs here, long-standing barriers crumble, and we can together witness the slowly spreading orange sunrise.

아일랜드 대문호 제임스 조이스의 소설 '피네간의 경야'(Finnegan's Wake)가 붉은 해(日), 아니 오렌지 선라이즈처럼 마음 속으로 번져왔다. 안다영의 정규 2집 'WHERE IS MY FRIEND?' 열한 개 트랙을 모두 듣고 다시 'intro'로 넘어가는 일이 이 책의 구조와 겹쳐지기 때문이다. 이 음반의 'intro'는 마지막 트랙 'EASY' 후주와 연결된다. '피네간의 경야'의 마지막 장인 Ⅳ부 1장 타이틀 역시 '회귀'다. '한 길 한 외로운 한 마지막 한 사랑 받는 한 기다란 그'가 이 작품의 끝문장인데 '그'는 영어로 'THE'를 가리킨다. 이 THE는 이 책의 첫 줄인 '강은 달리나리(river run)'와 이어진다. 그 다음 문장은 '이브와 아담의 성당을 지나…'로 시작한다. 난해함이 극에 달해 문제작으로 꼽히는 '피네간의 경야' 주역집을 낸 김종건 고려대 명예교수에 따르면, '이브와 아담의 역은 물의 역류'를 암시한다. 이는 '강물은 하루에 밤과 낮 두 차례로 역으로 흐른다'는 이탈리아 철학자 비코의 '역사의 회규(會規)'도 뜻한다. 안다영은 첫 솔로 EP 'Waves, Smoke, River'(2014) 동명 타이틀곡에서 "넓은 강이 있었으면 좋겠다"(I wish I had a so wide river)고 끊임없이 읊조렸다. 안다영은 이제 그 강 위에서 회귀할 용기를 갖고 있다. 그녀는 'WHERE IS MY FRIEND?'의 intro 주요 키워드로 '윤회' '카르마(Karma)'를 꼽았다. 3년 간 작업해 온 이 음반을 특정 생각으로 수렴해 마침표를 찍기 싫다는 항변이다. intro 속 코러스의 반복은 수레바퀴가 도는 삶에 대한 환유의 풍경이다. '피네간의 경야'에서 경야(經夜)는 밤을 지샌다는 뜻이다. 소설은 더블린 외곽 주점 주인의 하룻밤 꿈을 다룬다. 안다영의 'WHERE IS MY FRIEND?'도 하루의 긴 꿈처럼 들리고 읽힌다. 허물어진 땅에서 어제처럼 쉬이 잊혀지기는 싫어 아스팔트 위에서 종종걸음으로 질주하는 한 낮의 분주함을 지나 밤에 찾아온 악몽이라는 'grave of light'를 거쳐 오렌지 선라이즈를 마주하고, 누군가를 버리는 것이 쉽다며 콧노래를 부르는 다시 초연해지는 삶.

안다영의 음악 세계는 신화적이다. 신화 속 대다수의 주인공은 무엇에 대한 상실감으로 현실을 떠났고, 결국 귀환했으며 그 과정에서 표류함으로써 답을 얻었다. 안다영의 이전 음반들인 첫 EP 'Waves, Smoke, River', 정규 1집 'ANTIHERO'(2020), 두 번째 EP 'Burning Letter'(2021) 역시 비슷한 구조다. 이번 앨범에서도 사라진 벗들을 떠올리며 친구라는 존재와 의미를 정처 없이 흘러가면서도 찾아간다. 그런데 삶엔 정답이 없고 삶은 원하는 방향으로 흘러가지도 않는다. 안다영 역시 자신이 알고 있는 진실을 정확하게 표현할 수 없을까 우려하고 걱정한다. 이는 붕괴('해피 아스팔트')되거나 괴리감('echoborn')을 느끼거나 냉소('하품 / survive 101')로 이어진다. 하지만 안다영의 음악 세계는 그럼에도 경멸을 기어코 견뎌내 환멸로 나아가지 않음으로써 소멸되지 않는다. "오랜 날에 잊어버린 네 이름에 모자람 없는 작별"을 하고 그 "흔한 가사 하나 망치지 못할"('you can change nothing') 사람이라고 규정하는 일은 안티고네처럼 비극적 상황에 내던져져도 고독한 선택을 감행하겠다는 결기다. 음반에 담아낸 각종 혼란들은 자신을 온전히 드러내기 위한 최소한의 시간인 셈이다. 'grave of light' 'tunnel' '오렌지 선라이즈' 같은 곡들의 제목이 주는 즉각적인 심상을 포함해 가사와 사운드로 청각을 시각화하는 '회화적 재능'을 가진 안다영의 음악은 이렇게 삶의 경련에 대한 흔적이라는 구전 신화의 작법을 남긴다.

안다영의 이번 앨범에서 또 톺아봐야 할 지점은 그녀의 특출난 재능이 더 보편성에 도달하는 길을 확보했다는 것이다. 팝적인 요소들이 더 녹아들어간 이번 앨범은 더 많은 이들을 만날 수 있는 접점이 넓다. 안다영은 포스트록 기수로 통한 밴드 '끝없는잔향속에서우리는'을 통해 불규칙한 몽환성을 구축했고, 다층적인 결의 사운드를 지닌 얼터너티브 록·팝 위주로 자신의 디스코그래피를 채워왔다. 이번에도 자칫 침잠 가능한 노랫말과 달리 아득해지면서 가슴 벅참을 안기는 사운드와 코러스의 사용이 탁월한데 더 템포가 있고 밝다. 우리말이든 영어든 적당하게 뭉개져 귀를 더 솔깃하게 만드는 창법의 보컬이 하나의 사운드로 작용하는 일체감은 더 탄탄해졌다. 'tunnel'은 팝 그 자체다. 멜로디컬함과 경계하는 불안정한 분위기를 오가는 기타 리프의 반복, 변주가 인상적인 데다가 적당한 리듬감의 짧은 싱잉랩이 얹어진 '하품 / survive 101' 역시 대중적인 문법으로 잘 빠졌다. 자신의 작품이 메시지, 사운드 측면에서 왜 좋은지에 대해 마니아를 설득해온 안다영은 이제 자신의 음악이 전체적으로 어떻게 좋은지를 알고 싶어 하는 청자의 요구에 화답하는 경지에 이르렀다. 그건 기교적인 것도 물론 한몫했지만 인간과 세상에 대한 통찰력이 깔린 음악에 대한 애정으로 수렴한다. 카르마(Karma), 즉 업보(業報)를 더는 일과도 결국 연결된다. 콧노래를 부르며 당신을 버리는 일은 너무 쉬웠다('easy')라고 노래하는 건, 더 이상 켕기지 않는 인간관계를 만들겠다는 일종의 다짐이다. 그을린 어젯날, 조명 뒤에 내 쉰 날숨 등 각자 세계의 절망을 서로 몰라도 여기 안다영의 노래를 들을 때 오랜 빗장이 무너지고 우리는 천천히 번지는 오렌지 선라이즈를 함께 볼 수 있다.
