On the morning of March 6, 25 years ago, when mixing was almost finished,
Dedicated to two (Seoul-style) albums
In 1995, I held my first performance in front of Hongik University. Thirty years have passed. The weather has changed, and so have I. In 2025, I will release two new full-length albums: (Seoul-style Daytime Side) and (Seoul-style Night Side).

After completing the recording of the tracks for each album, I've been wrestling with them for the past two years as a producer and mixing engineer. However, as a musician, I've been unable to fully express my "skill, sensibility, and heart" in the final tracks. This project has forced me to acknowledge my limitations and has made me determined to approach new work with more composure, joy, sincerity, and health.

Born and raised in Seoul, I wanted to record what I've experienced, felt, and thought, using the "skills, sensibilities, and heart" I possess, in a Seoul-style "audible" format. I hope these two albums will allow you to experience a different side of Seoul.

I would like to express my gratitude to my fellow musicians and those who worked with me on this album.

Baek Hyun-jin

It's thrilling to live in the same era as Baek Hyun-jin. It's truly a luxury to even be able to speak the same language and live in the same city.

Baek Hyun-jin is an artist whose work encompasses everything seen and heard. The megalopolis that is Seoul has embraced and nurtured Baek Hyun-jin. Having performed his first show in front of Hongik University in 1995, Baek Hyun-jin has spent the past 30 years documenting Seoul through the lens of what he perceives.

In particular, as the album's producer and mixing engineer, he not only engaged in what might be called artistic and conceptual creative activities, but also, as a technician, added his unwavering commitment to sound. As a musician, he literally captured everything he could, from lyrics and melody to the plating that encapsulates them.

With the friendly distinction of [Seoul-style day side] and [Seoul-style night side], Baek Hyun-jin lends his eyes and ears to the listeners.
We can experience Seoul as seen and heard through Baek Hyun-jin's eyes and ears.

Seoul Light can experience Seoul style in its own way, and global citizens can experience Seoul style in their own way.

This is my third time writing an introduction to his work. Why do they keep asking me to do it? I find myself wondering if I've been too diligent in my writing. Honestly, I'm always happy to do it, but I'm reluctantly starting this introduction to [Seoul Style].

[Seoul Style] is a project divided into two sides, day and night, and the music presented allows for a diverse spectrum of experiences beyond that time difference. I believe this spectrum best represents Baek Hyun-jin, who at times resembles a fantastical monkey, while at other times, he exhibits a variety of expressions, such as the lonely sigh of a cigarette in a back alley.

The composition's repetitive, unexciting narrative evokes a certain sense of longing. It felt like that during the production of "Your Hands," by Bangbaek, which I participated in. His somewhat urbane yet somewhat sordid memories seem to be distorted and repeated. Now, I find myself lost in thoughts of his partner, who has now left us far behind.

While the daytime side is filled with familiar songs previously released through concert halls, the night side features pitch-black music that makes it difficult to gauge distance. Perhaps, from now on, as we stumble along, our hands might accidentally touch. Whether that happens or not.

In a corner of the kitchen, there's a bottle of unfinished Cheongju. I pour myself a slow glass and set it against the sunny window, gazing intently at it. I anticipate that "Seoul Style" will be one of the best pieces I've enjoyed this year.

1995년, 홍대 앞에서 첫 공연을 했다. 30년이 지났다. 기후도 변했고, 나도 변했다. 2025년, 새 정규 앨범 두 장을 발표한다. (서울식 낮 사이드)와 (서울식 밤 사이드).

각 앨범에 수록될 곡들의 녹음을 마치고, 프로듀서이자 믹싱 엔지니어로서 지난 2년 동안 이 곡들과 지난한 씨름을 해왔다. 하지만 음악가로서, '기술, 감각, 마음'을 성에 찰 만큼 담아내지 못한 채 마무리한다. 이번 작업을 통해 나의 한계를 인정하게 되었고, 더 침착하게 그리고 즐겁게 그리고 진득하게 그리고 건강하게, 새로운 작업을 해야겠다고 마음먹게 된다.

서울에서 태어나 살면서 내가 경험하고, 느끼고, 생각한 것들을, 지금 내게 있는 '기술, 감각, 마음'을 사용해 서울식의 '들리는 것'으로 기록하고 싶었다. 이 두 장의 앨범을 통해 또 다른 면의 서울을 즐길 수 있길 바란다.

함께해준 동료 음악가들과 이 앨범을 함께해준 분들께 말로 다 할 수 없는 마음을 전한다.

백현진

백현진과 동시대를 살아간다는 것이 짜릿하다. 심지어 내가 그와 같은 언어를 쓰고 같은 도시에 살아갈 수 있다는 것이 참으로 호사스럽다.

백현진은 보이는 것과 들리는 것에 대한 작업을 전방위에 걸쳐서 담아내는 예술가다. 서울이라는 메갈로폴리스는 백현진을 품고 키웠다. 1995년 홍대 앞에서 첫 공연을 한 백현진은 30년을 살아낸 시간을 달여 서울을 '들리는 것'으로 표현해서 기록했다.

특히 그는 이 앨범의 프로듀서이자 믹싱 엔지니어로서, 소위 말하는 예술적이고 관념적인 창조 활동 뿐만 아니라 엔지니어링, 즉 기술자로서 소리-사운드-에도 가감없이 표현을 더했다. 음악가로서 노랫말과 멜로디, 그리고 그것들을 담아내는 플레이팅까지 말 그대로 표현할 수 있는 전부를 그려낸 것이다.

[서울식 낮 사이드]와 [서울식 밤 사이드]라는 친절한 구분으로, 백현진은 듣는 이들에게 자신의 눈과 귀를 빌려주었다.
우리는 백현진의 눈과 귀로 보이고 들리는 서울을 경험할 수 있다.

서울라이트는 서울라이트대로, 세계시민들은 세계시민대로 서울식을 느낄 수 있는 것이다.

다시 한 번.

그의 창작물에 대한 소개글 작성은 이번이 세번째이다. 자꾸 나에게 의뢰하는 이유가 뭘까. 그간 너무 성의있게 글을 써줬나 싶은 반추에 빠진다. 사실은 매번 기쁘지만 괜시리 마지못한 척을 하며 [서울식]에 대한 소개를 시작해본다.

[서울식]은 낮과 밤의 두 가지 사이드로 구분된 프로젝트인데, 그 시차 이상으로 다양한 스펙트럼을 경험할 수 있는 음악들이 배치됐다. 이런 스펙트럼이 백현진이라는 사람을 잘 표현해주는 점이라 생각하는데, 간혹 환상적인 원숭이 같다가도 후미진 골목에서 한탄섞인 담배연기를 고독히 뱉어대는 여러 표정들이 존재하는 것이다.

거창하지 않은 이야기를 반복해내는 작곡법에서는 모종의 그리움마저 느껴진다. 내가 참여했던 방백의 [너의 손] 제작 당시가 그랬던 것 같다. 다소 도회적이면서도 어딘가 추잡한 그의 추억들이 왜곡되고 반복되는 듯한 감상. 이제는 멀리 떠난 그의 파트너에 대한 생각에 잠겨보기도 한다.

공연장을 통해 공개했던 익숙한 곡들이 낮 사이드에 많이 포진되어 있다면, 밤 사이드에는 거리를 가늠하기 어려운 칠흑같은 음악들이 배치됐다. 아마 이제부터는 더듬더듬 걷다가 여러분과 내 손이 우연히 닿을지도 모르겠다. 그러거나 말거나.

부엌 한 켠에 마시다 만 청주 한 병이 있다. 느린 속도로 한 잔 따라두고, 볕이 잘 드는 창가에 잔을 세워 가만히 바라본다. 아마 [서울식]은 내가 올해 감상한 무엇들 중 최고의 한 피스가 되지 않을까는 기대를 걸어본다.
