[APARTMENT as told by Jang Ki-ha]
"I hope someone recognizes the youth I pour out every day." This is a part of the lyrics of <Beyond>. I'm probably one of the people who's seen Kardgarden pour out their youth the most this year. We've been drinking together almost every other day. Kardgarden is young. When they're excited, they're very confident, but when they're feeling down, they're incredibly timid. They get along well with everyone around them, but if you get to know them, they're incredibly lonely people. This album is filled with that kind of youthfulness.

Young love is so overwhelming that those who experience it hope that “everything will be the same as yesterday (<Young Dreams>),” but in the end, they are clumsy and end up “sorry for giving everything (<Lost 2>).” Young life seems like “a bead you don’t want to break (<Blue Blue>),” but as expected, “for some reason you’re afraid to open it (<Mother>).”

Kardgarden says that during his impoverished childhood, his dream was to live in an apartment. For this album, he built one. With beloved colleagues like Oh Hyuk, Parasol, Sunwoo Jung-a, Gureum, Jinsil, Na Jam-su, and Ozone, the album exudes a surge of musical ambition. In that sense, this album is more of a starting point for Kardgarden than a final product. I hope that as time passes, he won't "forget this season of departure (<Young Dream>) even as he lets it go." The shining youthful dreams contained within this album.


[APARTMENT by Kardgarden]

1. Let's Go to the Island (Feat. Oh Hyuk)
Hyuk added lyrics to a melody I had written before, and it was completed. The lyrics are about how we should continue to love each other even if it means patching up and filling in each other's shortcomings(?), but the arrangement was completed a bit fiercely, unlike the 'knot' of the lyrics. This is the title track of the album.

2. Just an ordinary day
I worked on the arrangement with Parasol. I remember a conversation during the process where the direction of the song was decided. Guitarist Naeun said, "If you're arranging with Parasol, it has to be Parasol-like," and I remember happily saying "OK." The song is quite impressive, with its flowing shuffle rhythm and catchy guitar riff.

3. Lost 2 (Feat. Sunwoo Junga)
This song was completed with the arrangement of a song I had written a while ago by my trusted fellow musician and friend, Ko Hyeong-seok, who is the same age as me. Sunwoo Jung-a completed the second verse and chorus, adding power to the song.

4. Home Sweet Home
This is one of my most cherished songs on the album. The lyrics are a mix of the days I hated going home alone and the story of my best friend living in regret every day. I worked with Jinsil of Life and Time on the arrangement. This song made me laugh and cry the most during the demo production, instrument recording, vocal recording, mixing, and mastering.

[장기하가 말하는 APARTMENT]
“매일 토해내는 젊음을 누군가 알아주길” < Beyond > 가사의 일부다. 나는 아마 올 한 해 카더가든이 젊음을 토해내는 모습을 가장 많이 지켜본 사람 중 하나일 것이다. 하루가 멀다 하고 같이 술을 마셨거든. 카더가든은 젊다. 호기로울 때는 아주 기세등등하지만 위축될 때는 그렇게 소심할 수가 없다. 주변 사람들과 두루두루 잘 지내지만 알고 보면 대단히 외로운 인간이다. 그런 젊음이 이 앨범에 가득 담겼다.

젊은 사랑은 벅찬 것이라서 그걸 경험하는 이들은 “모든 게 어제와만 같기를(<젊은 꿈>)” 바라지만 결국은 서툴러서 “모든 것을 주고도 미안(< Lost 2 >)”해 하고 만다. 젊은 삶은 “깨고 싶지 않은 구슬 같은 것(< Blue Blue >)”처럼 보이지만 역시나 “왠지 열어보기 두려워만(< Mother >)”지는 것이다.

풍족하지 않았던 어린 시절, 카더가든은 아파트에 살아보는 것이 꿈이었다고 한다. 이번 앨범에서 그는 아파트를 지었다. 오혁, 파라솔, 선우정아, 구름, 진실, 나잠수, 오존 등 사랑하는 동료들과 함께. 음악적으로 다양하게 뻗어 나가려는 의욕이 펄떡거리는 음반이다. 그런 의미에서 이 앨범은 카더가든에게 결과물이라기보다는 출발점이다. 세월이 흘러 그가 이 출발의 계절을 “떠나 보낼 때에도 잊어버리지는(<젊은 꿈>)” 않았으면 좋겠다. 이 앨범에 담긴 빛나는 젊은 꿈을.

예전에 써 두었던 멜로디에 혁이가 가사를 입혀주어 완성이 되었습니다. 가사는 서로의 미완을 깁고 메워서라도 우리는 계속 사랑해야 한다(?)는 느낌이지만 편곡은 가사의 ‘결’과는 다르게, 조금은 사납게 완성이 되었습니다 앨범의 타이틀 곡입니다.

파라솔과 함께 편곡 작업을 했습니다. 작업 중 곡의 방향성이 정해졌던 대화가 기억나는데요, 기타리스트 나은 누나의 "파라솔과 편곡을 하면 파라솔스러워야 해"라는 말에 저는 너무나 기쁘게 OK를 외쳤던 기억이 납니다. 유려하게 진행되는 셔플 리듬과 귀에 남는 기타 리프가 상당히 인상적인 곡입니다.
