Singer Cho Yong-pil, who showed his journey to his 20th album with 'Road to 20 – Prelude 1' in 2022 and 'Road to 20 – Prelude 2' in 2023, has finally revealed the big picture of the album '20'. In his new work '20', Cho Yong-pil shows 'Cho Yong-pil ver. 2024' by putting his own strong musical stamp on a wide genre spectrum spanning rock, electronica, and ballads.

The first song and title song, '그구나다', is a heartwarming cheering song for everyone in this era. It is a song that tells you to believe in yourself now and that it's okay to be a little late. The message is warm, but the color of the music is refreshing. The lively electric guitar, refreshing singing, and high-resolution sound are all mobilized to complete Cho Yong-pil's modern rock. The concept of this song, explained by lyricist Im Seo-hyun, who wrote the lyrics, is 'halfway (halfway, imperfectly, pretty good)'. "If you believe in yourself, it's okay to be a little later than others and sometimes take a wrong path. It's okay. I wanted to tell everyone, and myself."

'찰나' is a lively pop rock song with a 'chang-along' section that sticks to your ears. It's a city drive song sung by someone who can't control their heart on the road and their hands on the steering wheel while taking the person they've just fallen in love home. The electric guitar clangs and the drum beats that run like a running start are dazzling. 'You who sparkle, me who's disheveled/It's a fantastic flow!'

'Timing' is a fast-paced electronic pop rock. A fast, syncopated song runs like rap over a beat that kicks the axis. It bounces like a clear shower. The boy who didn't know what to do while saying, "My heart is bouncing bouncing" has suddenly become a young man. It's cute, as if he's shouting his own enlightenment, "Timing in love!" "Timing in life!" It's a highly addictive song that will shine at the baseball stadium, at a concert, and even in short-form on your phone.

'Like Serengeti' is a track that will make a large concert hall go up and down. The four-on-the-floor rhythm that induces huge applause is wrapped in an exotic melody like a Northern European folk song. It's like a camping festival held in a wide grassland instead of a arduous climb to Mount Kilimanjaro. Ecstasy and joy leap out of the speakers.

The ballad 'Why' is a love song as hazy as an autumn night's dream. It is a dramatic masterpiece. The song starts with dreamy whispers and calm keyboard performances, and it develops precariously, going back and forth between minor and major keys, true and false. The explosion in the latter half is also a masterpiece. It reaches its climax with a powerful guitar solo reminiscent of progressive metal and surging strings, and then suddenly closes the curtains and disappears like a ghost.

'Feeling of You' is once again a refreshing festival vibe. The chorus, 'Now light a hot fire/Now feel your dream, for you/The feeling of you', will excite the dreamers of this world like the 2024 version of 'Let's Go on a Trip'. A hymn for those who leave their complicated daily lives and run towards their dreams.

'La' is the hardest electronica track. The chewy build-up, dense bass, and explosive snare sound collide pleasantly with Cho Yong-pil's robotic vocals. Cho Yong-pil's characteristic husky and dense voice meets the cutting-edge arrangement to create an irreplaceable sense of refreshment. It easily transcends the barriers of generation and genre.

The music video for the title song 'That's Okay' was produced by the hot 'Dolphin Kidnapping Group' in collaboration with New Jeans. Director Lee Joo-hyung, who took the megaphone, said, "I wanted to tell the story that to those who are walking in the pitch-black darkness where the word hope seems childish, there is still a voice and gaze that cheers you on, right next to you."

Does the number '20' need any further explanation? '20' is cold. '20' is hot. We were all '20'. Or maybe we are '20'. All the '20's' that were sleeping inside us meet a new song and breathe again. They come alive. They wiggle. The heart of '20' beats again.

2022년 'Road to 20 – Prelude 1', 2023년 'Road to 20 – Prelude 2'로 20집으로 가는 여정을 차례로 보여준 가수 조용필이 드디어 앨범 '20'의 큰 그림을 모두 펼쳐 보인 것이다. 신작 '20'에서 조용필은 록, 일렉트로니카, 발라드를 가로지르는 넓은 장르 스펙트럼에 조용필만의 강렬한 음악적 인장을 찍어 '조용필 ver. 2024'를 보여준다.

첫 곡이자 타이틀곡 '그래도 돼'는 이 시대 모든 이들을 위한 뭉클한 응원가. 이제는 자신을 믿어보라고, 조금 늦어도 좋다고 토닥여주는 노래다. 메시지는 뭉근하되 음악의 색채는 시원하다. 호쾌한 전기기타, 청량감 넘치는 절창, 고해상도의 사운드가 총동원돼 조용필만의 모던 록을 완성한다. 노랫말을 쓴 임서현 작사가가 설명하는 이 곡의 콘셉트는 'halfway(중간쯤, 불완전하게, 꽤 괜찮은)'다. “자신을 믿는다면, 남들보다 조금 늦어도 가끔 어긋난 길을 간다고 해도 괜찮다고. 그래도 된다고. 모든 이들에게, 그리고 나에게도 말해주고 싶었다.”

'찰나'는 귀에 착 달라붙는 '떼창' 구간을 장착한 신나는 팝 록이다. 막 사랑에 빠진 이를 집에 데려다주며 핸들 위에 놓인 손을, 길 위의 마음을 주체할 수 없는 누군가가 부르는 도시의 드라이브 송. 찰랑대는 전기기타, 도움닫기처럼 내달리는 드럼 비트가 휘황하다. '반짝이는 너 흐트러진 나/환상적인 흐름이야!'

'Timing'은 질주감 넘치는 일렉트로닉 팝·록. 지축을 차는 비트 위로 랩처럼 빠른 엇박의 노래가 달려간다. 맑은 소나기처럼 통통 튄다. '심장이 Bounce Bounce 두근대' 하며 어쩔 줄 몰라 하던 소년이 어느덧 청년이 된 걸까. 마치 '사랑에는 Timing!' '인생에는 Timing!' 하고 제 나름의 깨달음을 외치는 듯 귀엽다. 야구장에서도, 콘서트장에서도, 휴대전화 속 숏폼에서도 빛을 발할 만큼 중독성 짙은 곡.

'세렝게티처럼'은 대형 공연장을 제대로 들었다 놨다 할 트랙. 거대한 박수 소리를 유도하는 포 온 더 플로어(four-on-the-floor) 리듬에 북유럽 민요처럼 이국적인 멜로디가 휘감긴다. 킬리만자로의 고달픈 산행 대신 넓은 초원에서 여는 캠핑 축제 같다. 스피커 밖으로 황홀감과 환희가 뛰어서 나온다.

발라드 '왜'는 가을밤 꿈처럼 아련한 러브송. 드라마틱한 역작이다. 몽환적인 속삭임, 차분한 건반 연주로 시작된 악곡은 단조와 장조, 진성과 가성을 오가며 아슬아슬하게 전개된다. 후반부의 분출 역시 명장면. 프로그레시브 메탈을 연상케 하는 강렬한 기타 솔로, 몰아치는 현악과 함께 절정에 올랐다 유령처럼 홀연히 커튼 닫고 사라진다.

'Feeling of You'는 다시 청량한 축제의 바이브다. '이제 뜨겁게 불을 피워/이제 느껴봐 너의 꿈을, for you/The feeling of you' 하는 후렴구는 2024년판 '여행을 떠나요'처럼 이 세상 몽상가들을 흥분시킬 것. 복잡한 일상을 떠나 꿈을 질주하는 이들을 위한 송가.

'라'는 가장 하드한 일렉트로니카 트랙이다. 쫄깃한 빌드업, 밀도 높은 베이스, 폭발적 스네어 사운드가 로봇처럼 처리된 조용필의 보컬과 즐겁게 충돌한다. 조용필 특유의 허스키하고 치밀한 음성은 첨단의 편곡과 만나 대체할 수 없는 청량감을 뿜는다. 세대와 장르의 벽을 사뿐히 뛰어넘는다.

타이틀곡 '그래도 돼'의 뮤직비디오 제작은 뉴진스와 협업으로 뜨거운 '돌고래유괴단'이 맡았다. 메가폰을 잡은 이주형 감독은 “희망이라는 단어가 유치해지리만큼의 깜깜한 어둠 속을 걷고 있는 이들에게, 그럼에도 당신을 응원하는 음성과 시선은 가장 가까운 곳에 있다는 이야기를 하고 싶었다”고 했다.

'20'이란 숫자 앞에 설명이 더 필요할까. '20'은 차갑다. '20'은 뜨겁다. 우리는 모두 '20'이었다. 아니면 '20'일 것이다. 우리 안에 잠든 그 모든 '20'이 새 노래를 만나 다시 숨 쉰다. 생동한다. 꿈틀댄다. '20'의 심장이 다시 뛴다.
