The Cho Yong-pil live craze that swept the 2025 Chuseok holiday
The Chuseok holiday in 2025 was unusually long. KBS broadcasted a live performance of "Cho Yong-pil โ€“ This Moment Forever," commemorating the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation, on the national holiday of Chuseok. Cho Yong-pil's first television appearance in 17 years took place on September 6th at Seoul's Gocheok Sky Dome, before an audience of 18,000. Cho Yong-pil is a musician who prioritizes connecting with his fans through his performances. His performances, featuring high-quality sound and performance, consistently deliver the ultimate thrill to his fans.
Cho Yong-pil, who performed a whopping 28 songs, delivered a flawless performance that defied his age, even in his mid-70s. Viewers of all ages were moved to tears by his exquisite songs. Immediately following the broadcast, many people pulled out their Cho Yong-pil albums to relive the emotional impact of the performance. Furthermore, "Gochujangjari" (Red Dragonfly) was used as the theme song for director Park Chan-wook's film "Nowhere to Be" (์–ด๋””์„œ๊ฐ€), igniting a Cho Yong-pil craze in South Korea. This moment once again proved why Cho Yong-pil is still dubbed the "King of Singers" even after all these years.

The live album '90 ยท CONCERT' of the King of Singers, released at the peak of his popularity
Cho Yong-pil's first live album was "Hit Song Medley Show," released by Jigu Records in 1981. Featuring a live medley of folk and pop songs, along with tracks from his third album, it was released exclusively on cassette tape and reissued in 1992 as LIVE: Haeundae Part 1, 2. Since then, Cho Yong-pil's live albums have continued, including Little Giant Cho Yong-pil's 1st Recital (1982, Oasis), Cho Yong-pil NHK Live (1983, Jigu), Cho Yong-pil '90 CONCERT / LIVE ALBUM (1990, Hyundai), LIVE LIVE LIVE '91 (1991, Seoul), '93 Haeundae Concert Live (1993, Seoul, LP released as picture disc), Cho Yong-pil and the Great Birth Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Live - Sound of the Soul (1994, SKC, released as LD), and 45th Anniversary Concert Hello (2015, TS&, released as DVD).
Among Cho Yong-pil's live albums, "'90 CONCERT/LIVE ALBUM," released in November 1990, was released at the peak of his popularity. This album contains live recordings of the "Reunion Concert in Memories" held at the Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul on Sunday, May 28, 1990. Among Cho Yong-pil fans, it is referred to as the "Legendary Golden Bat Performance" due to the singer's yellow stage costumes. Cho Yong-pil's popularity was so high that the live performance was broadcast on the popular MBC TV program "Saturday, Saturday is Fun."

The LP has 10 songs, and the CD has 14 songs, so the songs are different...
Reissued as a 2-LP album containing all 14 tracks
When Cho Yong-pil's '90 CONCERT / LIVE ALBUM was released, the tracks included on the LP and CD were different. The CD included four more songs than the LP: "I Love Suzi," "Right Here Waiting," and "Stand By Me." Of the 14 songs included in the CD, 12 are selected: 2 songs from the 12th album released in 1990 (Reunion in Memories, I Wish It Were That Way Now), 3 songs from the 10th album released in 1988 (Seoul Seoul Seoul, Mona Lisa, I Love Suzi), 4 songs from the 9th album released in 1987 (Curtain, Where Your Footsteps Linger, I Love You, Aha, That's Right, That's So True), 'Heunggong' from the 8th album, 'Party of Tears' from the 6th album released in 1984, 'Gangwon-do Arirang' from the 3rd album released in 1981, and 'Hano Baeknyeon' from the 1st album released in 1980. Two new pop songs (Right Here Waiting, Stand By Me) were added to complete the lineup. Songs released by Cho Yong-pil between 1987 and 1990 account for 9 out of the 14 songs, with the 9th album having the largest proportion. This reissued LP is a two-LP set, including four tracks not included on the original LP version. It is significant in that it marks the final reunion of the album as a complete collection.

A wild, sing-along concert that began and ended with a reunion in memories.
Featuring a diverse and captivating range of sounds, including new wave, ambient music, and fusion jazz...
What makes Cho Yong-pil's music so special is its forward-thinking sensibility. In 1984, he became the first Korean artist to digitally produce his sixth album in Japan, and in the same year, he also produced his best album on CD in Japan. This album became Korea's first CD. At the time, Cho Yong-pil broadened his musical horizons by boldly incorporating elements of 1980s new wave, fusion jazz, and synthesizer-based ambient music.
The live performance of <Cho Yong-pil '90 CONCERT> is a culmination of such musical experimentation. This live album opens with the Overture, a medley of "Reunion in Memories" and "Curtain Call." From the very first song, the crowd is captivated by the sing-along. The following track, "Aha, That's Right, That's Right," showcases a sophisticated new wave sound, with a powerful intro reminiscent of Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach." Cho Yong-pil's captivating falsetto is showcased in "Saranghaeyo," while "I Love Suzi," a song about his beloved niece, Suzi, combines the signature city pop sensibility with explosive sing-alongs to elevate the atmosphere. While Suzi was spelled in Korean on his 10th album, the English spelling "Suzi" is unusual here. "Mona Lisa" features a powerful guitar performance, complemented by saxophone, creating a fusion jazz style. The following song, Richard Marx's 1989 smash hit "Right Here Waiting," was a bit disappointing, as it didn't quite fit Cho Yong-pil's style. Of course, it's understandable, considering it was one of the most popular pop songs of the time. He moved on from that disappointment, broadening his emotional range with "Han-o-baek-nyeon" (Korean: ํ•œ์˜ค๋ฐฑ๋…„) and "Gangwon-do Arirang."
The highlights of the live performance are undoubtedly "Heogong" (Heogong) and "Tearful Party." "Heogong" is a representative song that won the Golden Cup at the 1986 Top Ten Music Awards. In this live performance, Jo Yong-pil himself plays the guitar and connects with the audience, sending a tsunami of emotion through the air. "Tearful Party" also topped the Top Ten Music Awards in 1984, and the saxophone rhythm in the second half of the song creates a climax. Following Ben E. King's 1961 hit "Stand By Me," "I Wish It Was That Way Now" and "Where Your Footsteps Stay" are performed. "Where Your Footsteps Stay" is sung in a new wave style, a departure from the original, subdued style, creating a unique feel. "Seoul, Seoul, Seoul," a song written for the 1988 Seoul Olympics that reached the top of the Top Ten Music Awards, and the closing song, "Any Other Guy," are both sung in English, with the second verse entirely in English. This attempt can be interpreted as Cho Yong-pil's attempt to target the English-speaking market beyond Asia.

Cho Yong-pil's hidden assistant, Ryo Yoshimata (ใ‚ˆใ—ใพใŸใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†)
It's interesting that the backing band for Cho Yong-pil's "90 CONCERT" album was not "Great Birth," but the Japanese band "Gwaenchanayo." This is because 1990 was a hiatus for "Great Birth." The band "Gwaenchanayo" was formed by eight of the best session musicians in Japan during Cho Yong-pil's active career in the 1980s. The name of "Ryo Yoshimata," who was in charge of the live music, is noteworthy. A Japanese New Age musician and composer, he is best known to us as the music director responsible for the soundtrack to the 2001 film "Between Calm and Passion." Among the tracks from the film, "The Whole Nine Yard" was used as background music in various documentaries, commercials, and even a comedy program.
Ryo Yoshimata also participated in the soundtrack of the 2016 drama "Legend of the Blue Sea" starring Jun Ji-hyun because he was captivated by Jun Ji-hyun's acting in the movie "My Sassy Girl." Ryo Yoshimata, who is familiar with Korea to this extent, met Cho Yong-pil in 1985. He accompanied Cho Yong-pil to a concert in the United States through his agency. However, Ryo Yoshimata said that he did not know that Cho Yong-pil was a famous singer in Korea at first and only found out later. Later, through his previous activities as a member of Cho Yong-pil's backing band "It's Okay" in Japan, he served as the music director for Cho Yong-pil's '90 CONCERT live album and presented a high-quality, top-notch sound.

An album that led the way in technical perfection for Korean live albums.
This album wasn't a major commercial success upon its release, peaking at number 17 on the Music Box chart for March 2, 1991. Considering the sales and popularity of Cho Yong-pil's previous studio albums, this suggests a broader understanding of and appreciation for Korean live albums. However, the album is significant in that it elevated the technical sophistication of Korean live albums, a field that was still underdeveloped at the time, thanks to the participation of top-tier Japanese session musicians and engineering staff. Indeed, the album vividly captures the grandeur of the concert hall and the fervor of the fans, meticulously capturing the balance of instruments and the powerful vocal texture of Cho Yong-pil at his peak.
Following this live album, Cho Yong-pil continued his live career in earnest by consecutively releasing the LIVE LIVE LIVE album in 1991 and the Haeundae Concert album in 1993. The '90 CONCERT live album can be seen as the beginning. In particular, Cho Yong-pil did not focus on the hits from his early days, but boldly sang the latest songs from 1987 to 1990, as well as unpopular songs such as 'I love Suzi', 'Saranghaeyo', and 'Aha, that's right, that's right'. This selection of songs that were loved by fans downtown rather than on terrestrial TV shows shows Cho Yong-pil's communication style that was not obsessed with popularity. It was also in line with his will to refuse awards and focus on music since 1987.
Cho Yong-pil has deeply moved fans through decades of uninterrupted musical progress, exceptional sessions with him, and the dedication of his staff. We hope that the reissue of the "Cho Yong-pil '90 CONCERT" live LP will allow fans to relive the excitement and joy of Cho Yong-pil's peak in 1990.

3) The disc label may not be attached smoothly due to the manufacturing process.
4) Damage to the outer packaging plastic that does not cause a problem with the product itself is not eligible for exchange/return.

โ€ป Poor playback
1) If you are using a turntable without a tonearm or weight adjustment function (mainly all-in-one models), you may experience a skipping phenomenon when playing tracks with large dynamic sound variations. This is mostly due to the light tonearm weight.
We do not accept returns or exchanges for playback problems caused by device issues, so we recommend playing on a device with adjustable tonearms.
2) Discs may not play smoothly due to static electricity and dust. This can usually be resolved by removing it with a dedicated product.
3) If dust accumulates on the needle, playback may not be smooth.

โ€ป Disk abnormality
1) The disc surface may be warped or warped. Returns or exchanges are only possible if there is a problem with playback.
2) Disc center holes are sometimes manufactured with a small diameter to minimize distortion in the playback range and maintain maximum consistency during repeated playback. If they do not fit the turntable spindle, the center hole can be adjusted using a dedicated product.
3) Occasionally, discs may have minor scratches or an imperfect finish. Returns or exchanges are only possible if there is a problem with playback.

โ€ป Color disc
1) The color disc may differ in color from the web image and actual color.
2) Due to the nature of color discs, there may be color differences between albums during the production process.
3) Color discs may contain small dots or other color dyes that occur during the manufacturing process.

โ€ป Exchange/Return Information
1) When requesting an exchange/return due to an obvious defect, please contact the customer service center with photos and videos that can confirm the defect and the model name of the player.
2) LPs are subject to frequent shipping, making them prone to damage to the jacket and difficult to resell. Therefore, returns due to incorrect purchases or changes of mind are not accepted. Please make your purchase carefully.
