Kim Dae-ho's debut work [TOUGH LIFE] has finally been released.
In the Korean jazz scene, there's hardly anyone who doesn't know the name Kim Dae-ho. Having emerged around 2010, he has steadily built a performing career for nearly 15 years, currently in 2025. With the exception of a brief stint with the project band Acousticology in 2015, he has mostly been active as a sideman.
Whether it's short or long, you've probably buried the musical story you want to tell in a corner of your heart.
What first sparked the story was an encounter with legendary drummer Lewis Nash.
This album, created with saxophonist Kim Ji-seok, trumpeter Joep Van Rhijn, and pianist Kang Jae-hoon, who have worked together for a long time, contains a total of 5 original songs and 4 jazz standard numbers, and fully captures Kim Dae-ho's musical experience and performances that he has accumulated over the years, as well as the moments from the recording.
The song with the same name as the album title, “Tough Life,” was created while imagining myself stopping at a convenience store to buy beer on my way home after a hard day.
The bluesy melody played on the bass embodies the hardships of life, but also the small joys and hopes we all hold on to despite them.
Perhaps the message Kim Dae-ho wants to convey is simple.
No matter how difficult life may be, this small but heartfelt message of comfort, encouraging us to persevere together, flows throughout this album.

인간미 넘치는 연주로 동료 뮤지션과 재즈 팬들에게 오랫동안 사랑받아온 올드루키,
김대호의 데뷔작 [TOUGH LIFE]가 드디어 공개됐다.
국내 재즈 신(scene)에서 김대호라는 이름을 모르는 사람은 거의 없을 정도다. 2010년경 등장해 2025년 현재까지 15년 가까이 꾸준히 연주 경력을 쌓아온 그는, 2015년 잠시 참여했던 프로젝트 밴드 어쿠스틱콜로지(Acousticology)를 제외하면 대부분 사이드맨으로 활동해왔다.
짧다면 짧고 길다면 긴 시간 동안, 본인이 하고 싶은 음악적 이야기는 마음 한켠에 묻어두었을 터.
그 이야기에 첫 불을 지핀 것은 전설적인 드러머 루이스 내쉬(Lewis Nash)와의 만남이었다.
오랜 시간 호흡을 맞춰온 색소포니스트 김지석, 트럼펫터 윱 반 라인(Joep Van Rhijn), 피아니스트 강재훈과 함께한 이번 앨범에는 총 5곡의 오리지널과 4곡의 재즈 스탠더드 넘버가 수록되어, 그간 쌓아온 김대호의 음악적 경험과 연주, 그리고 녹음 당시의 순간들이 고스란히 담겨 있다.
앨범 타이틀과 동명의 곡 “Tough Life”는 고된 하루를 마치고 집으로 돌아가는 길, 편의점에 들러 맥주를 사는 자신을 떠올리며 탄생한 곡이다.
베이스로 연주되는 블루지한 멜로디 속에는 삶의 고단함과, 그럼에도 불구하고 소소한 기쁨과 희망을 잃지 않는 우리 모두의 모습이 녹아 있다.
어쩌면 김대호가 전하고 싶은 메시지는 단순하다.
아무리 삶이 힘들어도, 함께 힘내보자는 작지만 진심 어린 위로. 그 따뜻한 마음이 이 음반 전반에 흐르고 있다.
