- Extinction, in search of its origins

To be clear, 『The Origin of Extinction』, which was opened in Dodous, is not a fruit that only tastes one thing. Their music is different from progressive rock, shoegazing, and alternative, but belongs to the huge category of rock. However, trying to clearly define Dodoers' music by genre can lead to misunderstanding of their music. They do not try to follow the genealogy of progressive rock steadily, nor do they try to resemble the attitude of shoegazing. The genre form they take in 『The Origin of Extinction』 is just a tool to clearly convey the theme of the album. Therefore, it is meaningless to try to classify Dodous' music by genre characteristics. 『Origin of Extinction』 is because the musical identity of the Dodoers is not divided by genre boundaries, but because they stem from the forgotten things, the melancholy, loss and regret of the marginalized, which are the topics they want to talk about.


- Song of the Dodo

The fate of Dodous may have already been decided. Looking back on the fate of the dodo bird, which became the motif of the band's name, they may have been trying to predict their extinction early through this album. Not much is known about this doomed band. 2015 『Dodous. yep. number. 1” and released a compilation album and five singles. Yoon Joong-hee, who is in charge of guitar and vocals, is doing film music under the stage name Vincentudio, and drummer Jeong Seung-gu has a history of drumming in other bands, including Doctors and Lonesome. Baek In-cheol, the bassist, has no special musical activities other than Dodoers, and is known to have started his music career as Dodoers after playing bass in an amateur club.

The less information there is about the band, the more mystery fills the gap. However, Dodous does not remain a mystery. The story of their wish, or the story of themselves is subtly permeated into the song like a landscape in a fog. 「Romeo and Romeo」, the first track of 『The Origin of Extinction』, is a song about minorities. Although we live in an age of political correctness, it is difficult to readily reveal our identity in a society with a strong conservative atmosphere. The moment when human identity is clearly revealed is love, and the longing for love is the most basic human need. This song is a cheering song of Dodous for those who have no choice but to suppress their desires and censor themselves in the face of social prejudice and stinging gaze.

The best-selling mask in the Internet age is anonymity. However, the mask of the online world provides a clue to unleash unreasonable anger and terrible hatred. 「Burning Fingers」 captures the reality of online, which has become a public toilet where extreme self-examination, hatred and desire for freedom of expression are excreted through cold and dry lyrics. The main point of appreciation for this song is that the irregular rhythm reminds us of the fingers of a malicious commenter tapping on a keyboard.

One of the double titles, 「Tramped by a dream」, is a bittersweet self-portrait drawn by Dodous. He chased his dream, but ironically, what he encountered in that dream was a lost dream. Ironically, the start and reason for their dream is forgotten as they run towards it. As seen in the lyrics, "Looking for the reason for the dream I first pursued, will I be able to find it?"

If 「Tramped by a Dream」 is regret about the dream they have walked, 「Goodbye Song」 honestly shakes off their inner feelings. On the outside, it looks like a simple farewell song that decides to break up with a lover, but Dodoers bids farewell to the public. In the past 10 years of their activity, nothing dramatic has happened to the Dodoers. - 멸종, 그 기원을 찾아서

분명하게 말하지만, 도도어스에 열린 『멸종의 기원』은 단 한 가지 맛만 내는 열매는 아니다. 그들의 음악은 프로그레시브 록, 슈게이징, 얼터너티브 등 제각각이면서도 록이라는 거대한 범주에 속해있다. 그러나 도도어스의 음악을 장르적으로 명확하게 규정지으려 하는 것은 자칫 이들의 음악을 오해하게 만들 수 있다. 그들은 프로그레시브 록의 계보를 착실히 이어나가려 하지도 않으며, 슈게이징의 애티튜드를 닮으려고 하지도 않는다. 『멸종의 기원』에서 그들이 취하고 있는 장르적인 형태는 앨범의 주제를 명확하게 전달하기 위한 하나의 도구일 뿐이다. 그러므로 도도어스의 음악을 장르적인 특징으로 구분하려는 시도는 무의미한 것이다. 『멸종의 기원』은 도도어스의 음악적 정체성이 장르적 경계로 나누는 것이 아닌, 그들이 말하고자 하는 주제인 잊힌 것들, 소외받은 자의 우울과 상실 그리고 회한 속에서 기인하기 때문이다.


- 도도새의 노래

도도어스의 운명은 이미 정해진 결말일지도 모른다. 밴드 이름의 모티브가 된 도도새의 운명을 돌이켜 본다면, 그들은 이 앨범을 통해 일찌감치 자신들의 멸종을 예견하려 한 것일지도 모른다. 멸종의 운명을 타고난 이 밴드에 대해 알려진 정보는 그리 많지 않다. 2015년 『도도어스. 이피. 넘버. 1』을 발표한 이후로 컴필레이션 앨범과 다섯 곡의 싱글을 발표했다. 기타 및 보컬을 맡고 있는 윤중희는 빈센튜디오라는 활동명으로 영화 음악을 하고 있고, 드러머 정승구는 닥터스와 쓸쓸스를 포함하여 다른 밴드에서 드러머로 활동한 전력이 있다. 베이시스트인 백인철은 도도어스 외에 특별한 음악 활동은 없으며, 아마추어 동아리에서 베이스를 연주하다가 도도어스로 음악 활동을 시작한 것으로 알려져 있다.

인터넷 시대에 가장 잘 팔리는 가면은 익명성이다. 그러나 온라인 세계의 가면은 이유 없는 분노와 끔찍한 증오를 맘껏 분출하게 만드는 단초를 제공한다. 「타오르는 손가락」은 극단적인 표현의 자유에 대한 자성, 혐오와 욕망을 마구 배설하는 공중화장실이 된 온라인의 현실을 차갑고 건조한 가사로 담아냈다. 변칙적인 리듬이 마치 키보드를 두드리는 악플러의 손가락을 연상케 하는 게 이 곡의 주 감상 포인트다.

더블 타이틀 중 하나인 「꿈에 밟히다」는 도도어스가 그리는 씁쓸한 자화상이다. 꿈을 좇았으나, 그 꿈속에서 마주친 것은 아이러니하게도 잃어버린 꿈이다. 그들이 꾸었던 꿈의 시작과 이유는 아이러니하게도 꿈을 향해 달려갈수록 잊혀간다. '처음 쫓던 꿈의 이유를 뒤져댄다, 찾을 수 있을까'라는 가사에서 보듯 결국 잃어버린 자신들의 꿈을 결코 찾을 수 없으리라는 현실에 대한 회한이다.

「꿈에 밟히다」가 자신들이 걸어온 꿈에 대한 회한이라면 「작별가」는 그들의 속마음을 솔직하게 털어낸다. 겉으로는 연인과의 이별을 결심하는 단순한 이별가처럼 보이지만, 도도어스는 대중과의 작별을 고한다. 그들이 활동한지 지난 10여 년 동안, 도도어스에게 드라마틱한 일은 일어나지 않았다. 그들이 마주한 것은 꿈이 아닌 차가운 '무관심'이다. 「작별가」는 무관심으로 일관한 청중에게 마지막으로 고하는 섭섭하고 시니컬한 고백이다. 「꿈에 밟히다」와 함께 더블 타이틀로 선정된 곡이다.


- ......결국 또는 마침내

도도어스의 음악에 담긴 메시지는 시대정신과 그리 멀리 떨어져 있지 않다. 그러나 이들을 사회적 메시지를 전달하는 음악가로 규정하는 건 옳지 않다. 그들은 정치적인 메시지로 세상을 향해 호소하지 않는다. 도도어스는 사회적으로 소외받는 사람들 혹은 평범한 얼굴을 지닌 보통의 사람들의 삶의 목소리에 귀를 기울인다. 그들이 관심 갖고 있는 것은 거창한 시대정신보다도 우리 사회의 소외 받는 사람들에 대한 작은 위로와 애정이다.

도도어스는 공식적으로 『멸종의 기원』으로 끝으로 해체한다. 도도어스는 지금 이 순간 끝이라고 선언을 했지만, 그들의 선언이 도도어스의 음악에 종언을 고하는 것은 아니다. 도도어스는 기나긴 여로의 끝에서 '마침내' 결실을 맺었지만 '결국' 멸종의 길을 선택한 밴드가 아닌, '결국' 해체에 이르렀지만 '마침내' 대중의 귓속에서 영원히 살아 숨 쉬는 독특한 음악으로써 첫 번째 자취를 남긴 것이다. 대중음악사에서 얼마나 많은 밴드들이 흩어지고 뭉치길 반복했는가? 언젠가는 두 번째 앨범으로 도도어스가 돌아오리라는 소박한 꿈을 꾸어본다.
