구남 4집, 마음의 세계적 기록

아주 오래 전, 십 몇 년 전, 그의 머리칼에 흐르는 개기름이 윤기로 느껴지던 청춘 시절의 조웅을 만났다. 나는 그 때 3호선버터플라이라는 밴드를 하고 있었다. 쌈지스페이스에서 함께 공연을 했다. 지금은 없어진. 지금은 흔적도 없는. 지금은 망한.

그로부터 많은 시간이 흘렀다. 이름도 독특한 구남과여라이딩스텔라는 이제 모르는 사람이 없는 밴드가 되었다. 음악적으로 4집을 낼 동안 구남은 본래 자신들의 음악에 계속 충실했다. 멀리가기 보다는 깊어졌다. 기술발전을 쫓아가기 보다는 불신했다. 그러나 그들의 음악은 멀리 멀리 갔다. 그들의 작업실이 있는 모래내에서 구남은 전 세계와 소통한다. 그러나 모래내의 방식으로. 모래내 시장의 낮고 슬프고 망해가고 다정하고 일상적이고 따스하고 암울하고 착잡하고 괴롭고 허물어지고 섬세하고 비싸지 않고 차분하고 상냥하고 울화가 치미는 그 방식이 미국으로, 캐나다로, 유럽으로, 영국으로, 일본으로, 대만으로, 동남아로 다닌다. 구남의 음악과 함께. 이건 BTS의 월드와이드함과는 전혀 다른 방식의 소통이다. 지구를 정복하는 건 BTS가 담당하고 지구를 지키는 일은 구남이 맡는다. 구남은 망해가는 것들을 보듬어 왔다.

아무튼 내게는 구남의 월드와이드함이 더 가차이 다가온다. 친구들이니까.

구남의 4집을 여기 저기서 들었다. 아직 그들은, 그들의 것을, 실험 중이다. 조브라웅. 구남과여라이딩스텔라. 웅이가 마흔이라니. 세월 참. 새벽에 보풀날리는 이불을 털고 컵라면을 후루룩, 혼자 먹으면서 구남을 듣는다. 쓸쓸하다. 사람이 너무 많은 퇴근길의 사당역에서 4호선에서 2호선으로 갈아타며, 구남의 4집을 듣는다. 어울린다. 그 바쁜 사람들과 삶을 놔버린 듯한 구남의 사운드가 주는 극적인 대비. 오히려 그건 한 덩어리다.

밤밤밤
웅이가 어떤 여자 코러스와 그렇게 스캣을 쏜다. 언제까지 우린 이렇게 자유로울 수 있을까 혹은, 언제 이 외로움을 벗어날 수 있을까.
그 밤이 밤으로 들린다. 한 밤 중에 만원에 네 개 맥주 캔을 따며 구남의 4집을 듣는다.
살짝 망한 느낌이 든다.

기타 플레잉 안에 고민들이 느껴진다. 길을 모를 때, 스트로크는 박자를 넘어선다. 음정을 확정짓지 못할 때, 목소리는 더블링된다. 지침과 힘냄이 순간순간 교체되는 때가 있다. 그럴 때는 그 둘 모두가 방황의 길목이 된다. 이것이, 솔직한, 피할 수 없는 현 주소다. 나의 주소, 너의 주소, 우리의 주소. 가도 가도 나의 집 뿐인, 그 황무지. 다다라도 다다라도 다시 나의 집일 뿐인, 그 좁디 좁은, 광활한 사막.

비교할 수 없는 너.
나띵 컴페어... 그게 누군지 이야기하지 않는다. 그래봐야 내 앞에는 헤어짐 뿐일 테니까. 야, 야, 야. 하고 소리지르는데 해피하지는 않다. 무엇과도 바꿀 수가 없는 이 기분은, 바로 그, 추락의 기분이겠지. 오르가즘 바로 다음에 몸에서 요구하는 추락의 루트. 웅이는 그걸 추적해 들어간다. 줄줄 흐르는 슬픔이여. 그래, 약속을 미뤄도 딱히 지금의 시간이 빛나지는 않지.

나의 쪼꼬만 마음을 보다가

그래 우린 편협했다. 사람들을 쫓아냈고, 튀쳐나왔고, 외로워졌지. 그게 너무 당연한 결과지만, 그럴 수 밖에 없었지. 참을 수 없었으니까.

그래. 가야지. 갈 사람은. 우리 믿지 말자. 되도 않을 사랑에 내 시간의 카드를 걸지 말자. 그러나 달리 방법이 없네. 사랑하지 않으면, 전율하지 않으면 음악이 어디 있는 거냐. 니체의 머리에 디오니소스의 혼이 깃들어 써내려간 광기의 언어들 사이 사이에 죽음이 있고 사라짐이 있다. 사라짐과 도취. 그게 사랑이고 그게 음악인데 그거 아니면 우린 뭐하러 사는 거냐. 그런데 갑자기,

하고 웅이가 부른다. 벌떡 잠에서 깨, 아니, 꿈속에서 그 부름에 답한다. 웅아. 너 어딨니. 넌 지금 싱가포르야? 이 노래 좋다 웅아. 싱가포르.

웅아. 그런데 딱하나 걱정이 든다. 이것들이 그 누구의 것도 아니어야 하는데 말이지. 이게 니꺼니? 애들은 왜 떠나갔어. 그러니 너는 이렇게 노래하는 거야.

더는 해야할 말 없네.

근데 그건 할 말이 없어서가 아니라, 이게 누군가의 것이 되었기 때문이야. 누구의 것이 되는 순간 음악은 순순이 사라져주고 소멸한다는 가장 중요한 됨됨이를 지우고 욕심꾸러기가 되지않나. 나도 더는 해야할 말이 없다. 그려 그려. 말일랑은 그만 놓자. 말해 뭐해. 그래도 이 말은 하고프다. 니가 이러고 있는 동안 내가 술 한 잔 안 마셔 줬다니 미안. 그러나 니가 이러고 있는 동안 나도 그러고 있었어. 그게 핑계가 될 수는 없겠지. 끝이란...그래, 그 말은 두렵다. 그렇지만 끝에는 만나니까 끝은 행복해지는 거야. 다들 맨 끝에는 만나잖니. 말해 뭐해.

해결의 실마리는 보이더라. 바로 이 대목에서. 니가 너를 닫아놓지 않고 있다는 사실이 나를 기쁘게 한다. 마음의 창문으로 너를 내보내서 빗소리로 세상과 섞여 들며 사라지고자 한다는 걸 알겠어. 모래내 시장바닥을 흐르다 홍제천으로 사라질 그 물처럼 세상의 바닥을 누비고 다니는 우리의 음악들.

창문을 여니 빗소리가 커지네
그래 너는 창문을 여는 아이야.

그 다음에 나오는 오키의 색소폰. 그 소리가 빗소리고 그 소리가 니가 듣고 싶은 소리겠지. 창문을 열고, 말들을 지우고, 노래 조차 지우고 빗소리를 듣자 그래야만

남은건 커다란 욕심뿐

그걸 지울 수 있어. 이 노래들로 다시 지우자. 몸과 마음의 욕심들을.

이렇게 지난 두 주 동안 구남의 음악을 듣고 다녔다. 여기 저기. 이것보다 더 솔직한 마음의 기록이 있을까. 이것은 모래내의 마음에 관한 세계적 기록이다. 실패와 성공의 갈림길에, 뮤지션들은 외줄을 탄다. 둘 중의 하나가 아니면, 그저 늙어갈 뿐. 그 때 할 수 있는 것들은 기록이다. 담담한 기록. 마음의 기록. 소리가 마음의 기록이라는 걸 이 앨범보다 더 잘 드러내긴 힘들 거 같다. 웅이는, 여전히 자기 길, 갈 길이 멀다. 끝내 해피해야 해. 우린 불행할 수 없어. 뮤지션이니까. 불행이 코 앞에 있어도 웃으며 지나치자. 불행은 강요된 것이고 행복은 내가 하기 달린 거야. 이 노래들을 들으면 나중에 아성이가 고마워할 거야. 아빠. 고마워요. 뙤약볕이 내리쬐는 어느 여름날 아침에 나를 놀이방에 데려다줘서. 그런 후 아빠는 모래내에 갔죠? 거기서, 당신의 불가능한 판타지를 꿈꿨죠. 당신의 음악으로. 내게는 그 판타지가 중요하다기 보다는, 그 순서들이 중요해요. 놀이방에서부터 모래내까지의, 그 먼 길을, 당신이 흥얼거리며 걸었다는 그 사실이. 그 흥얼거림이 이렇게 기록되어 있다는 사실이.
