Seokkyu Han - Reset

Han Seok-gyu, a 4th-generation jazz vocalist in the domestic jazz scene, sings with a voice influenced by authentic standard jazz and composes his own story. In 2019, with his first EP “Objet,” he expressed his own lyrical sensibility in the language of jazz, and was evaluated as “I will not apply the advantage of being a male jazz vocalist in Korea.” A singer-songwriter whose musical value was recognized. settled down as Then, in April 2022, he participated in the UNESCO-designated “World Jazz Day” Jazz Festa at Nodeul Island DIVA's Concert and went on stage as a rising new jazz vocalist. It was recognized for its spontaneity by digesting authentic bebop, swing, blues, and standard numbers selected by listeners.

Han Seok-gyu's voice is gaining more color and depth as time goes by. In the early days, I learned the swing feeling by studying the authentic jazz standard in depth, and recently I got an emotional melody in the process of interpreting and understanding the stories of singer-songwriters. It is also noteworthy that his heartbreaking language gained while overcoming pain and suffering in the ups and downs of life. This album “Reset” was born as a result of a combination of reflections on various music genres and inner experiences.

Han Seok-kyu's first regular album “Reset” consists of two chapters. The first chapter was produced by himself, with pianist Seo In-hye, guitarist Lee Ji-ho, bassist Lee Dong-min, and drummer Han In-jip, who have been able to learn authentic jazz for a long time. On tracks 1 to 4 of Love, Wind, Reset, and Tomorrow, you can taste Han Suk-kyu's solid jazz tune.
In the second theme, composer HEN, who is active in various fields, was in charge of arranging and producing, and many musicians participated, including guitarist Ha Beom-seok, pianist Lim Chae-sun, and violinist Kang Yi-chae. Sweetheart, Wind blow wind, initialization, and tracks 5 to 8 on the same day as tomorrow created Han Seok-kyu's unique genre that cannot be attributed to any genre.

“Love”, which captures emotions in a dream, is a swing ballad, and the emotions of love in real life are expressed in Bossa nova’s “Sweetheart,” citing the theme melody of Han Suk-kyu’s 1st Single, “Starlight.” “Wind,” a song about the bereavement of those who have passed away, is a dreamy guitar sound, and “Wind, blow, wind,” which expresses desperate resentment and pain in addition to longing, has a variable beat of 5 and 6 beats, like a storm. It contained the wind. The album's title "Reset", which contains the loss of people who cannot be held back in the passing time, expresses screams with full musical instrument sounds, followed by "Initialization", which expresses the sound of crying with a violin, It concludes with “A Day Like Tomorrow,” which contains the message to hold hands and move forward together.

As such, Han Seok-gyu's “Reset” is designed with two themes so that listeners can feel different feelings depending on how they are arranged, even if they have the same melody and lyrics. Music becomes an object that allows listeners to feel different things depending on the emotional line, time, and season. This is linked to the message of his first EP, “Objet”. In Han Seok-gyu's first full-length album, “Reset,” there is a time difference between the first theme and the second theme, so that you can fully feel the two messages that change and fluctuate over time.

정통 스탠다드 재즈에 영향받은 목소리로 노래하며 자신만의 이야기를 작곡하는 국내 재즈 신(Scene) 4세대 재즈 보컬리스트 한석규. 2019년 그의 첫 번째 EP “Objet”로 자신만의 서정적 감성을 재즈의 언어로 풀어내 “국내 남성 재즈 보컬리스트라는 어드벤티지를 굳이 적용하지 않겠다.”라는 평가를 받으며 음악적인 가치를 인정받은 싱어송라이터로 자리 잡았다. 이어 2022년 4월 유네스코 지정 “세계 재즈의 날” 재즈 페스타 at 노들 섬 DIVA's Concert에 참여해 떠오르는 신예 재즈 보컬리스트로 무대에 올랐고, 같은 해 EBS 스페이스 공감 “잼 세션 재즈 보컬 편”에 출연해 그가 뿌리에 둔 정통 비밥과 스윙, 블루스 그리고 청취자들이 직접 선곡한 스탠다드 넘버들을 소화하며 그 즉흥성을 인정받았다.

한석규의 목소리는 시간이 지날수록 다양한 색채와 깊이가 더해지고 있다. 초기에는 정통 재즈 스탠다드를 깊게 공부하며 스윙감을 익혔고, 최근에는 싱어송라이터들의 이야기를 해석하고 풀이해가는 과정에서 감성적인 멜로디를 얻었다. 삶의 굴곡 속에서 아픔과 고통을 이겨내며 얻은 그만의 가슴 시린 언어 또한 주목할 만하다. 여러 음악 장르에 대한 고찰과 내면의 경험들이 복합적으로 작용하여 탄생한 것이 바로 이번 앨범 “Reset”이다.

이번 한석규의 첫 번째 정규 앨범 “Reset”은 두 가지의 챕터로 구성되어 있다. 첫 번째 챕터는 본인의 프로듀싱으로 피아니스트 서인혜, 기타리스트 이지호, 베이시스트 이동민, 드러머 한인집과 함께 오랜 시간 정통 재즈를 습득한 노련함을 담아 완성했다. 사랑, 바람, Reset, 내일의 1번~4번째 트랙에서는 한석규만의 견고한 재즈 튠을 맛볼 수 있다.
두 번째 테마에서는 다양한 분야에서 활동 중인 작곡가 헨 (HEN)이 편곡 및 프로듀싱을 맡아 기타리스트 하범석, 피아니스트 임채선, 바이올린에 강이채와 함께 다수 뮤지션들이 참여했다. Sweetheart, Wind blow wind, 초기화, 내일 같은 날 5~8번 트랙으로 어떠한 장르로 귀속할 수 없는 한석규만의 독특한 장르를 탄생시켰다.

꿈속에서 이루어지는 감정을 담아낸 “사랑”은 Swing Ballad로, 현실에서 이루어지는 사랑의 감정은 한석규의 1st Single인 “Starlight” 테마 멜로디를 인용하여 Bossa nova 버전의 “Sweetheart”로 표현하였다. 곁을 떠나보낸 사람들에 대한 사별을 노래하는 환절기의 “바람”은 몽환적인 기타 사운드로, 그리움에 더해 처절한 원망과 아픔을 표현한 “Wind, blow, wind”는 5박과 6박자의 변박자로 폭풍 같은 바람을 담아내었다. 흘러가버리는 시간 속 붙잡아둘 수 없는 사람들에 대한 상실을 담은 앨범의 타이틀 “Reset”은 가득한 악기 사운드로 절규를 표현하였으며, 이어 울음소리를 바이올린으로 표현한 “초기화”, 상실감 속에도 곁을 지켜주는 소중한 사람들과 손을 잡고 함께 앞으로 나아가자는 메시지를 담은 “내일 같은 날”로 마무리한다.

이처럼 한석규의 “Reset”은 같은 멜로디와 같은 가사를 가지고 있더라도 어떻게 편곡하느냐에 따라 듣는 이로 하여금 각기 다른 감상을 느낄 수 있도록 두 가지의 테마로 기획되었다. 음악은 듣는 이의 감정선, 시간, 계절에 따라 서로 다른 것을 느끼게 하는 오브제가 된다. 이는 그의 첫 번째 EP 앨범인 “Objet”의 메세지와 연결되어 있다. 이번 한석규 정규 1집 “Reset”에서는 첫 번째 테마와 두 번째 테마 간 시간 차를 두어 시간이 흐름에 따라 변화하고 요동치는 두 가지의 메시지를 충만히 느껴보기를 바란다.
