Aphorisms Singing at the Boundary of the Twenties
The debut EP of the band Hyukoh, known for their delicate sound and sensibility, [20]

20. It is certainly a number that excites everyone. There are inevitably several reasons why vocalist Oh Hyuk, who has just turned twenty, and his band chose the title of their debut album as [20]. 20 is the number of youth that is still unripe. This album contains a total of six songs, with two songs grouped by age: nineteen, the last year of the teens; twenty, the age when one has just left the teens and is still quite clumsy; and twenty-one, the beginning stage of adulthood.

Among these, the transitional age of twenty is a special time. For those who have just emerged from their teens and entered their twenties, a new world unfolds. It is a period when all senses regarding the world expand the most, and the spectrum of experience widens incomparably compared to the past. They are far too imperfect to be considered adults, and trial and error is frequent. For this reason, it is clear that there is an advantage in that mistakes or errors are still tolerated. In other words, it is a time when any attempt is possible. There exists a freshness unique to those just passing through this stage, and the possibilities remain softly open.

Hyukoh focuses on the emotions of those just entering their twenties. At the center of this are people and human relationships. The countless human relationships experienced during a time when social networks have not yet been fully formed. These layers of relationships, which overlap endlessly in the form of a rhizome without any connecting links, are bound to evoke various emotions and skepticism.

Vocalist Oh Hyuk, who was in charge of the lyrics, composition, and arrangement for all the songs, spent nearly 20 years abroad until the end of his teens. After turning 20 and moving to Seoul, he had been active as a solo artist under the name Hyukoh, before starting a new band called Hyukoh with like-minded friends of the same age. These unique boys, barely past their 20s, fearlessly attempt a new genre never before seen in Korea. Their urban R&B-style vocals and exaggerated reverb instill a sensation that feels like it is welling up from deep within the heart, quite different from the sweetness that has traditionally sung about the sensibilities of the 20s.

Composed of a voluminous sound reminiscent of Childhood or Mac DeMarco, the track satisfies the sense of completeness that freshness can easily overlook. Vocalist Oh Hyuk’s unique background as an art theory major also plays a significant role here. He has been active across the board, serving as a performer for the 2014 Gwangju Biennale special exhibition and as a music director for fashion films and various exhibitions. His experience, having made a distinctive stride in the field of visual arts, is infused with his innate sophisticated sensibility.

The title track, "Wiing Wiing," is set against the backdrop of the emptiness and pessimistic feelings experienced at the end of one's teenage years. Rather than singing out of hope, it emphasizes darkness, yet feels somehow soft and fresh, as if lying down in the sunlight. In fact, there is nothing as easy yet difficult as forming relationships. One is bound to get exhausted when repeatedly witnessing the absurdity caused by dysfunctional relationship networks.

The binary opposition of wanting to know about you and me, yet at the same time never wanting to know, makes one want to shut oneself away somewhere. However, this, too, cannot last long. Failing to be true to oneself returns as an inexplicable guilt toward someone. The song's atmosphere, which seems to say, "I wish I had never been born," matures through delicate word choices reminiscent of the Romanian philosopher and pessimist Emil Cioran. The refined expressiveness captures the loneliness and alienation of humans—who seem to have run off course and endlessly drift—without feeling awkward, while simultaneously possessing aesthetic sophistication.

Vocalist Oh Hyuk, who composed and wrote the lyrics for all the songs, personally holds the most affection for "I have no hometown." As mentioned earlier, the nomadic sensibility brought about by his long stay abroad is clearly evident in the title. Imagine yourself in your twenties, merely drifting on unstable waters like a floating weed. Unestablished relationships erode your twenties like flooding waves.

Every day, whenever one steps out of the house, one meets new people, and sparks of exchange fly as impressions are instantly exchanged. However, these fleeting impressions are merely fragmented pieces of information, far removed from truth; consequently, shallow relationships built solely on these impressions barely manage to endure. The repetition of such fragmentary relationships brings a sense of disillusionment to everyone. Oh Hyuk believed that the only solace people could find in this situation was their "hometown," where they had maintained long-standing relationships. Things that cannot be satisfied by newly met people are filled by the relationships known as neighborhood friends. However, for him, there is no place that could be called a hometown.

A desolate heart evoked nostalgia. As is commonly known, nostalgia is a term referring to longing for home, but strictly speaking, it is a yearning for what can never be returned to. Time gone by remains etched in the heart as a beauty that can never be revisited. Everyone has a time when they dreamed of falling endlessly, frolicked in cornfields, and caressed the old bricks of the streets. This speaks of "Lostalgia"—that is, the fundamental sense of loss inherent in human existence—which goes beyond the nostalgia for these lost times.

As poet Choi Young-mi stated in her poem, there exist times that swell up like a tomb, times that must be endured somehow. We must somehow survive, sensitively and painfully, while harboring an inflammation on the verge of bursting. Hyukoh quietly illuminates this darkness of life with a depth befitting his age. Such unadorned indifference is made possible by innate sensibility and reflection. It resembles Albert Camus’s argument in his essay *The Myth of Sisyphus* that Sisyphus, suffering an unending punishment, can become truly free the moment he realizes the inevitability and absurdity of his arduous life.

The senselessness and absurdity of existence cause those who cannot accept it to wander. Therefore, sometimes, rather than someone who simply hugs and soothes, one needs someone who will walk shoulder to shoulder with them, saying, "That’s just how it is." Could Hyukoh’s songs be a good companion for such people?

20대의 경계에서 노래하는 아포리즘
섬세한 사운드와 감성의 밴드 '혁오 (HYUKOH)'의 데뷔 EP, [20]

20. 누구에게나 설레는 숫자임이 틀림없다. 갓 스물을 넘긴 보컬 오혁과 그의 밴드가 데뷔 음반 제목을 [20]으로 정한 데에는 필연 여러 가지 이유가 있다. 20은 아직 설익은 청춘의 숫자이다. 본 앨범에는 10대의 마지막인 열아홉 살과 십 대를 갓 벗어나 한참 어설픈 나이인 스무 살, 그리고 성년의 초입 단계인 스물한 살에 쓴 곡들이 각 시기 당 2곡씩 묶여 총 6곡이 수록되어 있다.

그 중 과도기 나이인 스물은 특별한 시기이다. 막 10대를 벗어나 20대에 진입한 이에게는 새로운 세상이 펼쳐진다. 세상을 향한 모든 감각이 가장 확장되는 시기이자 경험의 스펙트럼이 이전과는 비교 불가하리만큼 넓어진다. 성인이라기엔 너무도 불완전할뿐더러 시행착오도 잦다. 그렇기 때문에 오히려 아직은 실수나 잘못을 해도 용인되는 메리트도 있음은 분명하다. 다르게 말하자면 어떤 시도든 가능한 시기인 것이다. 이 시기를 막 지나는 사람만이 가능한 신선함이 존재하고 그 가능성은 말랑말랑하게 열려 있다.

혁오는 갓 20대의 감정에 주목한다. 그 중심에는 사람들과 인간관계가 있다. 사회적 관계망이 채 형성되지 않은 시기에 겪게 되는 수많은 인간관계. 리좀(Rhizome)의 형태로 끝없이, 그리고 연결고리가 부재한 채로 중첩되는 이 관계의 레이어들은 다양한 감정과 회의를 불러오기 마련이다.

전곡의 작사, 작곡, 편곡을 맡은 보컬 오혁은 십 대 마지막까지 20년 가까운 시간을 해외에서 보냈다. 20살이 되고부터 서울에서 살기 시작하면서부터 혁오라는 이름으로 홀로 활동해 오다가 마음 맞는 동갑내기 친구들과 밴드 혁오를 새롭게 시작했다. 갓 스물을 넘긴 이 개성 넘치는 소년들은 지금까지 국내에서 찾아보지 못했던 새로운 장르를 겁 없이 시도한다. 어반 R&B적인 보컬과 과장된 리버브는 여태껏 20대의 감성을 노래해 오던 달달함과는 조금 다른, 마음속 깊은 어느 구석에서부터 치밀어 오르는 듯한 자극을 심어준다.

Childhood나 Mac DeMarco를 연상시키는 멜랑콜릭한 사운드로 구성된 볼륨감은 신선함이 놓치기 쉬운 완성도를 잊지 않고 충족한다. 여기에는 미술 이론을 전공한 보컬 오혁의 특이한 배경 역시 한몫하고 있다. 그는 2014년 광주 비엔날레 특별 전시의 퍼포머이자 패션 필름 및 각종 전시의 음악 감독으로서 전방 위에서 활동해 왔다. 비주얼 아트 분야에서도 독특한 활보를 이어온 그의 경험이 타고난 세련된 감각과 함께 녹아 들어 있다.

타이틀 곡 "위잉위잉"은 십대가 끝날 때 느낀 허무함과 염세적 기분이 배경이 되는 곡이다. 희망을 목 놓아 부르기보다는 오히려 어두움을 부각시키지만 마치 햇빛 아래 몸을 뉘인 듯 어딘가 보송보송하다. 사실 관계 맺는 것만큼 쉽고도 어려운 일이 없다. 제대로 작동하지 않는 관계망으로 인한 부조리함을 반복해서 목도하다 보면 지치기 마련이다.

당신에 대해서, 나에 대해서 알고 싶지만, 한편으론 결코 알고 싶지 않은 이항 대립적인 심정은 어딘가 틀어박히고 싶게끔 만든다. 하지만, 이 역시 오래갈 수는 없는 것이다. 자신에게 충실하지 못한 것이 누군가에 대한 이유 모를 죄책감으로 돌아온다. `차라리 태어나지 말걸`이라고 말하는 듯한 곡의 분위기는 루마니아의 철학자이자 염세주의자 에밀 시오랑을 연상시키는 섬세한 단어 선택으로 무르익는다. 정제된 표현력은 궤도를 탈주한 채 끝없이 겉도는 듯한 인간의 고독함과 소외감을 낯간지럽지 않게 끌어오는 동시에 미학적인 치밀함도 갖추고 있다.

전곡의 작곡, 작사를 맡은 보컬 '오혁'이 개인적으로 가장 애착을 가지고 있는 곡은 "I have no hometown"이다. 앞서 언급했듯이 오랜 해외 생활이 가져온 노마딕(nomadic)한 감성이 제목에서도 여실히 드러난다. 표류하는 부초처럼 불안정한 수면 위에 몸을 싣고 곧잘 떠다니기만 하는 20대의 당신을 떠올려보라. 정립되지 않은 인간관계는 범람하는 파도처럼 20대를 침식해 간다.

하루하루 집 밖을 나설 때마다 새로운 사람을 만나고, 순식간에 인상을 주고받는 교류의 스파크가 튄다. 그러나 이 짧은 인상은 파편적으로 조합된 정보들에 불과하고 진실함과는 거리가 멀어 인상들로만 이루어진 얕은 관계들이 어렵사리 지속될 뿐이다. 이런 단편적인 관계의 반복은 누구에게나 회의감을 가져온다. 오혁은 여기서 사람들이 그나마 위안을 얻을 수 있는 것은 오랜 관계를 맺어온 자신의 고향이리라 여겼다. 새롭게 만나는 사람들로는 충족할 수 없는 것들이 소위 동네 친구라고 불리는 관계에서 채워진다. 그러나 그에게는 고향이라 부를만한 것이 존재하지 않는다.

황량한 마음은 노스탤지어(Nostalgia)를 불러왔다. 노스탤지어는 흔히 알고 있듯이 향수를 말하는 용어이지만 엄밀히 말하자면 다시 돌아갈 수 없는 것에 대한 그리움이다. 지나간 시기는 다시 돌아갈 수 없는 아름다움으로 남아 마음속에 새겨져 있다. 누구에게나 끝없이 떨어지는 꿈을 꾸고, 옥수수밭을 뛰어놀며 거리의 오래된 벽돌을 어루만지던 시기가 있다. 이 잃어버린 시기에 대한 노스탤지어를 넘어서는 로스탤지어(Lostalgia), 즉 인간 존재의 근원적 상실감에 대해 이야기하는 것이다.

시인 최영미가 그녀의 시에서 말했듯이, 무덤처럼 부어오르는, 어떻게든 해야 하는 시간들이 존재한다. 우리는 곪아 터지기 일보 직전의 염증을 품은 채 예민하고 아프게, 그리고 어떻게든 살아 나가야만 하는 것이다. 혁오는 나이에 걸맞지 않은 깊이로 이와 같은 삶의 암(暗)을 조곤조곤히 밝혀간다. 이처럼 치장하지 않은 무덤덤함은 타고날 수밖에 없는 감각과 성찰로 가능한 것이다. 마치 알베르 카뮈가 그의 에세이 시지프스 신화에서 끝나지 않는 형벌을 받는 시지프스가 지난한 자기 삶의 불가피함과 부조리함을 깨닫는 순간 진정 자유로워질 수 있다고 역설한 것과 닮아 있다.

존재의 무연고성과 부조리함은 이를 수용하지 못하는 인간을 방황하게 한다. 그래서 때로는 마냥 껴안아 주고 달래주는 이보다는 원래 다 그런 거지라고 말하며 어깨를 나란히 하고 함께 걸어줄 사람도 필요하다. 그런 이들에게 혁오의 곡들이 좋은 동반자가 되어줄 수 있지 않을까.
