Hyukoh's Anthem for "Young Us": A Band Everyone Knows
'HYUKOH' [23]

Oh Hyuk, the leader of Hyuk Oh, was born on October 5, 1993, making him 24 this year. At the age of nine, he experienced the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, a memory that remains in his memory as "that night poured out on the hot weather" and "that's why I'm happy anyway" in the song "2002WorldCup" from Hyuk Oh's new album [23]. However, he never had that same experience at nine. It was the kind of night that all kids his age loved. Instead, what befell them in their teens and twenties was a school life that felt like a survival audition and the worst job market in history. The lyrics of Hyuk Oh's song "Weing Weing" were also the reality of Hyuk Oh and their peers. "I feel so sorry for the way I look, just lazing around at home with nothing to do." Young people who sympathized with Hyuk Oh's lyrics gradually promoted them on Facebook and Instagram, even though they were singing in small venues. That's how they earned the nickname, "The Band Only I Know." The indie band, which hadn't been exposed to much media, gradually gained recognition through fans who considered them "the only band I know." But with this song, Hyuk Oh became a "band everyone knows." After their appearance on MBC's "Infinite Challenge," "Wee Ing Wee Ing" began playing on the streets, and they sold out much larger venues than before. It was a rare moment when the voices of youth were conveyed to the people without any filtering. The members of Hyuk Oh still wore the same clothes they wore in their small venues, and Oh Hyuk was hesitant and couldn't speak properly in front of the TV cameras. However, their status began to change immediately after the "Infinite Challenge" broadcast. Amidst these drastic life changes, Hyukoh's album [23] speaks to the hearts of those in their 20s, without pretense or self-deprecation. It would be a lie if they still compared themselves to "mayflies" like they did in their "Weeing Weeing" days. But that's no reason for them to brag. All they can say is, like the first song on [23], "Burning Youth," a pledge and declaration to themselves and their peers: "We're not so wrong."

"Young Us." These four words, which open the highlight of [23]'s title track "TOMBOY," encapsulate where "Hyuk Oh" is and what they're trying to say. Having previously embraced the reality of being unable to live solely through self-mockery and "mental triumph," they now refer to their peers as "us." And they tell them they're not wrong. This isn't about offering hopeless support or hope. The lyrics that immediately follow "Young Us" are, "I can't see my age rings." We haven't had the opportunity to experience or grow enough to develop enough age rings in our lives. However, the world is a place where we want to say, "I'm sitting on thorns," and "Even though I'm bleeding, no one cares" (Leather Jacket). So, all we can do is say, "I'll just hide / I used to hide / and fight secretly" (Tokyo Inn). Memories of victory and glory like the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup are few, and life is always difficult. As a result, we lose our bearings, just watching the world go by. Even "Hyuk Oh," a rare group of successful twenty-somethings, lives with the anxiety, "Tie loose shoelaces tight / I might trip and fall while running" (leather jacket). However, [23] doesn't shy away from this reality. Instead, it confronts these concerns head-on. While the title of "Die Alone" is steeped in youthful pessimism, "Reserved Seat" projects the band's emotions onto an airplane yet to depart. The band, which suddenly gained immense popularity in the space of just one year, confronts the pressures of stardom and the anxieties about the future head-on, presenting the perspective of "our youth." This honesty about these concerns and frustrations has fueled Hyuk Oh's musical evolution. Drawing on diverse rock genres like rock 'n' roll, hard rock, and surf rock, they present these concepts in a way that defies genre conventions. The first song on the album, "Burning Youth," starts off with a country-like vibe, but at some point, it transforms into a powerful song that even makes you feel angry, and "Leather Jacket," which started out as rock and roll, soon transforms into the anger of a "half-fifty" person who has been swept away by the world.

As the questions raised about their own youth deepened, the composition and arrangement became more meticulous, and the performance and mixing by Hyukoh became even more refined. "TOMBOY," with its dramatic shift in mood as the song's core line, "We the Young," appears, and "Ji-Seok," where the guitar plays the takeoff-like sound of a taxi driver switching to an airplane, showcases Hyukoh's ability to capture the frustration and anger of youth with sophisticated sound. Hyukoh repeatedly traveled to Germany to precisely capture the desired mood for each song. As a result, they were able to express both the live performance experience of "Leather Jacket" and the unique atmosphere of "Ji-Seok," reminiscent of a melancholic film soundtrack. The title track, "TOMBOY," particularly encapsulates the despair, regret, and faint hope of past youth, all within the context of "We the Young." Through its calm yet subtle shifts, it presents a powerful moment, compelling anyone to repeat the chorus at a concert. From "The Band Only I Know" to the most stylish band, the team has delivered a fresh message and unexpected music from their position. Will "we the youth," and even adults, respond to their songs?

모두 아는 밴드'가 된 '혁오'의 '젊은 우리'를 위한 송가
'혁오 (HYUKOH)' [23]

'혁오'의 리더 '오혁'은 1993년 10월 5일생, 올해로 스물넷이다. 아홉 살에 2002 한일 월드컵을 경험했고, 그 기억은 '혁오'의 새 앨범 [23]의 수록곡 "2002WorldCup"에서 '뜨거운 일기 위에 쏟았던 그 밤'이자 '아무튼 그래서 나는 좋다'라고 했던 기억으로 남아있다. 그러나 그에게 다시 그 아홉 살 때와 같은 경험은 돌아오지 않았다. 또래의 모든 아이들이 좋아했던 그런 밤. 대신 그들의 10대와 20대에 찾아온 것은 세상이 서바이벌 오디션이나 다름없는 학창 시절과, 사상 최악의 취업난이었다. '혁오'의 노래 "위잉위잉"의 가사는 '혁오'와 그들 또래의 현실이기도 했다. "집에서 뒹굴뒹굴 할일 없어 빈둥대는 내 모습 너무 초라해서 정말 죄송하죠" '혁오'의 가사에 공감하는 청춘들은 작은 공연장에서 노래하던 그들을 페이스북이나 인스타그램으로 알음알음 홍보했다. 그래서 생긴 별명, '나만 아는 밴드'. 미디어에 많이 노출되지 않던 인디 밴드가 그들을 '나만 아는 밴드'라 생각하는 팬들을 통해 조금씩 이름을 알려갔다. 그런데 이 노래와 함께 '혁오'는 '모두 아는 밴드'가 됐다. MBC '무한도전' 출연 이후 "위잉위잉"이 거리에서 나오기 시작했고, 그들은 과거보다 훨씬 큰 공연장을 매진시켰다. 보기 드물게 청춘의 목소리가 별다른 여과 없이 사람들에게 전달된 순간. '혁오'의 멤버들은 여전히 작은 공연장에서 입던 대로 옷을 입고 공연했고, '오혁'은 TV 카메라 앞에서만 서면 쭈뼛거리며 말을 제대로 하지 못했다. 하지만 그들의 위상은 '무한도전' 방송 직후부터 달라지기 시작했다. 이런 인생의 극단적인 변화 속에서, '혁오'의 앨범 [23]은 허세도 자학도 없이 20대인 그들의 할 말을 토해낸다. 그들이 여전히 "위잉위잉" 시절처럼 자신들을 '하루살이'에 비교한다면, 그것은 거짓말일 것이다. 하지만 그것이 그들이 허세를 떨 이유도 되지 않는다. 다만 말할 수 있는 것은 [23]의 첫 곡 "Burning youth"처럼 그들, 그리고 그들의 또래에 대해 다짐하고 선언하는 것이다. 'We`re not so wrong"

'젊은 우리'. [23]의 타이틀 곡 "TOMBOY"의 하이라이트를 여는 이 네 글자는 '혁오'가 지금 어디서, 무엇을 말하려는지 집약한다. 스스로에 대한 자조와 '정신 승리'만 하며 살 수 없는 현실을 담았던 그들은 이제 자신의 또래를 '우리'라고 표현한다. 그리고 그들에게 틀리지 않았다고 말한다. 대책 없는 희망이나 응원을 말하려는 것이 아니다. '젊은 우리'에 이어 곧바로 나오는 가사는 '나이테는 잘 보이지 않고'다. 인생의 나이테가 생길 만큼 많은 것을 경험하거나 성장할 기회는 없었다. 하지만 세상은 "하필 걸터앉은 곳은 가시덤불"이고 "피가 철철 나도 아무도 봐주질 않네" (가죽자켓)라 말하고 싶은 곳이고, 그러니 할 수 있는 것은 "난 그냥 숨을래 / 난 원래 숨어서 / 몰래 싸웠다"(Tokyo Inn) 뿐이다. 2002년 한일 월드컵과 같은 승리와 영광의 기억은 많지 않고, 세상살이는 늘 어렵다. 그 결과 어디로 가야 할지 방향을 잃은 채 눈치만 본다. 성공한 20대라는 희귀한 존재가 된 '혁오'도 "풀린 신발 끈은 꽉 매야 해 / 혹시나 달리다가 밟아 넘어질지 몰라" (가죽자켓)라는 불안을 안고 산다. 그러나 [23]은 이런 현실을 에둘러 피해 가지 않는다. 대신 고민들을 풀어놓고, 정면으로 부딪친다. 그래서 "Die alone"처럼 제목부터 청춘의 비관이 담겨 있는 곡이 있는 한편, "지정석"처럼 아직 어디로도 떠나지 않는 비행기에 자신의 감정을 대입하기도 한다. 딱 한 살 더 먹는 시간 동안 갑자기 큰 인기를 얻게 된 밴드가, 그 위치에서 스타로서의 압박감과 미래에 대한 불안을 정면으로 바라보면서 '젊은 우리'의 입장을 내놓게 됐다. 그리고 이 고민과 좌절에 대한 솔직함으로부터 '혁오'의 음악적 발전이 가능했다. 로큰롤, 하드록, 서프록 등 여러 록의 장르들을 바탕으로 하되, 그것을 장르의 전형에서 벗어난 방식으로 소화한다. 앨범의 첫 곡 "Burning youth"는 컨트리를 연상시키는 분위기로 시작해 어느 순간 분노마저 느껴지는 파워풀한 전개로 바뀌고, 로큰롤로 시작한 "가죽자켓"은 어느새 세상에 휩쓸려버린 '절반 오십'의 분노로 바뀐다.

스스로의 청춘에 대해 제기하는 문제가 깊어진 만큼 작곡과 편곡은 더욱 세밀해졌고, 그것을 뒷받침하는 '혁오'의 연주와 믹싱은 더욱 정교해졌다. 노래의 핵심인 '젊은 우리'가 나오는 순간 곡의 분위기가 극적으로 바뀌는 "TOMBOY", 택시를 타던 사람이 비행기로 바꾸는 순간, 마치 기타가 비행기 이륙과 같은 소리를 내는 "지정석"은 정교한 사운드로 청춘의 좌절과 분노까지 담아내는 '혁오'의 역량을 보여준다. '혁오'는 곡마다 원하는 분위기를 가장 정확하게 내기 위해 독일을 여러 차례 오가며 믹싱을 반복했다. 그 결과 "가죽자켓"처럼 공연장에서 직접 그 소리를 듣는 것 같은 곡과 "지정석"처럼 마치 우울한 영화의 OST와 같은 독특한 분위기를 모두 표현할 수 있었다. 특히 지난 청춘에 대한 절망과 회한, 희미한 희망을 '젊은 우리'에 집약시킨 타이틀 곡 "TOMBOY"는 차분하며 세밀한 변화로부터 누구나 공연장에서 후렴구를 되뇌일 수 밖에 없을 만큼 벅찬 순간을 제시한다.
