J BEL, 2nd solo concert [Aesthetics, Resistance, Love]

The sounds from Jaybell's second solo concert held on February 7, 2015 at Hongdae KT&G Sangsang Madang Live Hall were revealed to the public through this live album. Like his previously released albums, Jaybell attempts to communicate with the world through music in this album as well.

Having started his first Hongdae club performance in 2001, he has been a musician for 15 years now. Through his performances, he has presented his own ‘music’ to the public with a profound theme of “aesthetics, resistance, and love,” the three joys of his 20s that were filled with only wounds. It would not have been easy without the help of the six session members who came together for the solo concert.

Out of the 16 total performance songs, 10 are included in the album, 4 of which (1999 Love (subtitle: Heukyaae (黑夜愛)), 040424, She Doesn't Love Me, Idealistic Real) are previously released songs, and the remaining 6 are revealed through this live album. Mixing and mastering were done at Tone Studio, and it is said that the actual album (not the audio source) will be released next week.

If you listen closely to the songs included, you get the feeling that the 10 songs are naturally arranged in order, illuminating Jaybell's life in a bright or dark way. Although melancholy seems to be the main element of the atmosphere, if you listen to it, you can feel softness and brightness, and if you listen to it again, you can be a little surprised by the unexpectedly rough and strong songs. There is no very exciting or very bright atmosphere, but strangely, Jaybell's 'optimistic' personality is revealed as it is throughout the songs.

This applies even to extremely dark and gloomy songs. In fact, Jaybelle is said to have cured his own illness by singing about the neurosis that had plagued him so much during his college years in a song called 'Neuroje'. I wonder if his hopes for his music to be a comfort to those who are struggling mentally will come true through this album. I imagine his father, who unfortunately passed away just before the album was released, happily laughing in heaven while listening to his son's music.

J BEL, 두 번째 단독콘서트 [미학, 저항, 사랑]

2015년 2월 7일, 홍대 KT&G 상상마당 라이브홀에서 했던 제이벨 두 번째 단독 콘서트의 소리들이 이 라이브 앨범을 통해 대중들에게 공개되었다. 이전에 발매되었던 앨범처럼 이번 앨범에서도 제이벨은 음악을 통해 세상과 소통하려고 한다.

2001년 첫 홍대 클럽 공연을 시작한 후 어느덧 15년 차 뮤지션의 길을 걸어가고 있는 그는 공연을 통해 상처로만 가득했던 20대의 즐거움 세 가지, ＂미학, 저항, 사랑＂이라는 깊이 있는 주제로 대중들에게 그만의 '음악'을 선보였다. 단독 콘서트를 위해 뭉친 6명의 세션들의 도움이 없었다면 쉽지 않은 일이었을 것이다.

총 16곡의 공연 곡 중 10곡이 앨범에 수록되었으며, 이 중 4곡 (1999 사랑 (부제: 흑야애 (黑夜愛)), 040424, 그녀는 날 사랑하지 않아, Idealistic Real)은 기존에 발매되었던 곡들이고, 나머지 6곡은 이번 라이브 앨범을 통해 공개되었다. 톤 스튜디오에서 믹싱과 마스터링이 이루어졌으며, 다음 주에는 음원이 아닌 음반도 발매될 예정이라고 한다.

수록된 곡들을 자세히 들어보면 10곡이 자연스럽게 순서대로 나열되어 제이벨의 생을 밝게 혹은 어둡게 조명해주고 있는 느낌이 든다. 우울함이 분위기의 주된 요소인 것 같지만 듣다 보면 부드러움과 밝음이 느껴지기도 하고, 다시 듣다 보면 의외로 거칠고 강렬한 노래에서 조금은 놀라기도 한다. 아주 신나거나 아주 밝은 분위기는 없지만 신기하게도 전반적인 곡들에서 '낙천적'인 제이벨의 성격이 그대로 드러난다.

심지어 극단적으로 어둡고 우울한 곡들에서조차도 이것은 적용된다. 실제로도 제이벨은 대학 시절 자신을 심하게 괴롭혔던 신경증을 '노이로제'라는 곡으로 만들어 부르며 스스로의 병을 치유한 경험이 있다고 한다. 자신의 음악이 정신적으로 힘들어하는 사람들에게 위로가 되길 바라는 그의 바람들이 이 앨범을 통해 이루어질지 생각해본다. 안타깝게도 앨범 발매 직전에 돌아가신, 그의 아버지가 하늘나라에서 아들의 음악을 들으며 즐겁게 웃고 있을 모습을 상상해본다.
