From Jaybell One to Jaybell. It may not seem like a big change, but what you should remember is that he has endured the reality of Korean rock music for 10 years. Jaybell, who started from a certain point in the Hongdae indie scene from the early 2000s to the present, has clearly been constantly changing his music.

He, who released a single album in 2011 with 'She Doesn't Love Me', has come out with a mini-album with 4 songs. The theme that runs through it is love, yes, that commonplace love. He released love, a universal theme for humanity, and this old grammar that chews over past memories, in 2012, that is, in this suspicious era where the destruction of humanity is being recalled.

Jaybell One's upcoming mini-album 'Black and White' is walking a strange tightrope between regression and evolution. To put it in a more succinct way, it can be seen as being based on dialectical thinking about progress and retreat.

As you can see from the song '1999 Love (Subtitle: Heukyaae)', his songs start from some time in 1999. It is a painful memory of first love that anyone would have. In 'New Unremembered', it becomes hope, and in 'She Doesn't Love Me', it conveys a single realization that was saved from despair. The last song, 'Travel', unravels the aftermath of all the previous processes.

Again, it's the past. I would say that the reason for this new choice of Jaybelle and the emotion that the message he wants to convey will evoke in the listener are secondary issues. What's really important is the vessel that holds the story. With the arrangement of each song suggesting the intersection of light and darkness, the vessel Jaybelle One chose was 1980s or early 1990s Korean modern rock, folk rock.

So, it is truly welcome. He is soothing the strange sense of alienation that might have been felt from the retro wind of popular songs. 제이벨원에서 제이벨로. 큰 변화처럼 보이진 않지만 기억해야할 것은 그가 한국 록음악의 현실에서 버텨왔던 10년이다. 2000년대 초반부터 현재까지 홍대 인디신의 어느 한 지점에서 시작해 지금껏 걸어오고 있는 제이벨은 분명 끊임없이 자신의 음악을 변주 중이었다.

2011년 '그녀는 날 사랑하지 않아'로 싱글앨범을 냈던 그가 4곡을 들고 미니앨범으로 나타났다. 관통하는 주제는 사랑, 그렇다 그 흔해빠진 사랑이다. 인류보편 주제인 사랑을, 그것도 과거의 기억을 곱씹는 이 낡은 문법을 2012년, 그러니까 인류의 멸망이 회자되는 이 수상한 시대에 내놓았다.

제이벨원이 발표할 미니앨범 '흑백'은 퇴행과 진화 사이에서 묘한 줄타기를 하고 있다. 좀 있어보이게 표현하자면 진퇴에 대한 변증법적 사고를 바탕에 두고 있다고 볼 수 있겠다.

'1999 사랑 (부제: 흑야애)'라는 곡에서 알 수 있듯 그의 노래는 1999년 어느 때를 시발점으로 한다. 누구나 갖고 있을 법한 첫사랑에 대한 아픈 기억이다. 그것이 '기억나지 않는 새로운'에선 희망이 되며 '그녀는 날 사랑하지 않아'에선 절망 속에서 건졌던 하나의 깨달음을 전한다. 마지막 곡 '여행'은 앞선 모든 과정 이후를 풀어 놓는다.

다시 말하지만 과거다. 제이벨의 이 새삼스러운 선택에 대한 이유, 그리고 그가 전하고자 하는 메시지가 듣는 이에게 불러일으킬 감흥은 두 번째 문제라 말하고 싶다. 정말 중요한 건 이야기를 담아놓은 그릇이었다. 빛과 어둠의 교차를 암시하는 각 노래의 배열과 함께, 제이벨원이 선택한 그릇은 1980년대, 혹은 1990년대 초반 한국 모던록, 포크록이었다.

그래서 실로 반가울 수밖에 없다. 대중가요의 복고바람에서 느꼈을 법한 묘한 소외감을 그가 달래주고 있기 때문이다. 한 케이블 채널에서 방영한 [응답하라 1997]에서 소외감을 느꼈던 우리의 록키드들은 제이벨의 이번 앨범에서 위로를 찾기 바란다. 어떤날, 장필순을 기억하는 이들이여, 조동진과 들국화의 '매일 그대와'를 흥얼거렸던 이들이여 응답하길.
