Jannabi's 4th full-length album [The Sound of Music pt. 2: LIFE]

The Sound of Music series has been a truly valuable project. Even with countless performances under our belts, we felt a sense of responsibility that this project remained with us. Thanks to this, we were able to diligently head into the studio, and as a result, we were able to release 20 tracks this year. It was a joyous and fulfilling experience.
Actually, when I divided this project into two parts, I didn't really think much about it, just thinking about Part 1: space, Part 2: earth—just these two concepts. I hurriedly worked on Part 1 first, trusting that Part 2 would naturally emerge as a reaction to it. I worked on this album primarily while walking, with a natural Earthly gait. I think it suits autumn well...


1. Earth
This song celebrates the daily journey of getting out of bed and stepping onto land. It's a story about the moment we touch the ground.

<With my feet firmly planted on the ground, the tracks that follow reflect on my past life and attempt to trace a path back to the present reality.>


2. After School Activities
It's a story about adolescence. It's about a teacher who tracks down a bicycle thief, and the students who are called away one by one, and the story behind it.

I wanted to capture the story of a rebellious adolescence. Like Yutaka Ozaki's "Fifteen Nights," or Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run," which isn't about adolescence, but something like that. There's a certain symbolism of a rebellious boy running wild. But I grew up in a comfortable apartment complex, receiving ample love from my parents and neighbors. If I had to pick the most rebellious moment in my memory, it would be opening my bedroom window wide and blasting Ozzy Osbourne's music, wanting to show off my heavy metal obsession. That's why I couldn't write a song like that.
While writing the song, I recalled a few memories of that precarious line of adolescence. One of them became the song's central event... I was called to the teacher's office as a suspect in a stolen MP3 player case, which is depicted as a bicycle in the song. One by one, they were called in, and the only thing I could think of to prove my innocence was this: "I have a bigger, newer one." Even now, over a dozen years later, what's etched in my mind is the teacher's reply: "That doesn't matter." I thought she just hated me. But it was a different story. Especially for adolescents. 3. Goodbye to first love-
This is the title track. First love contains more than I thought. This song is not only about first love, but also about me in that middle ground of becoming an adult. It's a story of me that wasn't all that innocent. I thought I wouldn't think much about it since it happened so long ago, but as I was writing the lyrics, my heart ached on its own. But whatever.. Smile and goodbye!!


4. Oh, New York City
On my first trip to New York at the age of 26, I was struck by the sheer volume of complex thoughts I had while looking at the tall buildings. Seeing the Empire State Building, I first encountered the burning desire for ambition. After that, I dreamed of lofty dreams, grand goals, and the grand life they would bring. This song reflects on the beginnings of that time.
This song was completed during a trip to New York with Dohyung, Hyung, and the three of us in 2022. I wanted to capture the exact feel of the voice memos we recorded that day, so I worked on it based on the voice memo files on my phone.


5. Jack Kerouac (feat. Yang Hee-eun)
This song is literally about youth. It's about youth, swept up in the dreams and ambitions mentioned above. The lyrics mention "youthful whirlpool," and I believe youth, as I see it, is about being caught up in that kind of turmoil. As the lyrics suggest, it's a time of laughter and hearty laughter, swept up in those inexplicable emotions. Even though the first and second verses share similar lyrics, I liked how the messages delivered by Yang Hee-eun and I felt completely different, so I removed the harmony and completed it entirely as our own monologues.


6. Mother (feat. Lee Su-hyun)
Hanging out with friends who make music can make you live such a reckless life. It's not their fault; it's just the subject of music that makes you that way. My neighborhood friends are becoming parents, one by one. These lyrics were written on the way back from my friend's daughter's first birthday party. I thought about what I'd want to pass on to my friends and I when we become parents.
I don't know about Suhyun, but I consider her my closest contemporary. That's why I thought it was even more meaningful to work on this song together. I played the mother in Akmu's "Matjjang," and I think this project is an extension of that.


7. Mountain man
This song is about aging, a concept I vaguely imagined. It sounds like a lament, a lullaby sung by a grandmother or grandfather, carrying a baby born from the mother above. That's what I imagined. Except for the lyrics at the end, I sat down in front of a microphone and wrote the lyrics in real time, which was a lot of fun.


8. A Tale About Summer l
I wrote this song while recalling the most summer-like summer of my life. I love the patchwork-like arrangement of the narration in the latter half and the chorus parodying the "Do-Re-Mi" song. While writing the song, I felt as if various summers were flashing before my eyes. So I wanted to write about summer, and I wrote it while recalling a summer that literally felt like a guerrilla unit.


9. TV Commercial for Summer Night Tea Show: Sweat & Stardust (skit)
What can I say? It's a self-parody of summer and fantasy, branded like Jannabi's own.


10. Mia's Memories and Universe
This is my personal favorite song with lyrics. It's a demo I made in 2018. It was supposed to be included on Legend, but the lyrics weren't finalized, so it didn't make it. The guide was written in fake French, so it wasn't easy to add Korean lyrics. I'm grateful to the crickets on the ridge next to the autumn fortress for their inspiration.


11. All the Boys and Girls 3: Glory
The Mososo series is a story about dreams. I have a Mososo self within me. I wanted to write about joining hands with many who have returned to reality. It's a story of an underdog who, by joining hands from the lowest crawling position, instantly reverses the situation. Once a fight begins, it never ends, no matter what.


12. The Sound of Music
We love music. It's the most beautiful of all things, and we love it with all our hearts. We hope music will be a great source of strength for you, too. We cheer on the sleepless nights of all Earthlings, who tap their feet evenly to the rhythm of the earth.

잔나비 정규 4집 [사운드 오브 뮤직 pt.2 : LIFE]

사운드 오브 뮤직 시리즈는 정말 값진 프로젝트였습니다. 수많은 공연을 달리면서도 이 프로젝트가 우리에겐 남아있다는 일말의 책임감 '덕분에!' 성실하게 작업실로 향할 수 있었고, 그 결과 올 한 해 20트랙을 쏟아낼 수 있게 되었습니다. 즐거웠고 또 행복했습니다.
사실. 이 프로젝트를 두 개의 파트로 나눌 때에는 별생각 없이 파트1은 우주, 파트2는 땅, 단지 이 두 개념뿐이었습니다. 그 뿐만으로 부랴부랴 파트1을 먼저 작업했고, 파트 2는 뭐 그에 대한 반작용으로 저절로 나오리라 믿었습니다. 이 앨범은 주로 걸으며 지구인의 걸음걸이로 걸으며 작업했습니다. 가을과 잘 어울리는 거 같은데..


1. 어스
침대에서 나와 발을 딛는, 매일 연속되는 육지로의 착륙을 기념하는 곡입니다. 땅에 닿는 순간을 그린 이야기입니다.

<그렇게 땅에 발을 딛고, 이후의 트랙들은 지나온 삶을 돌아보며 지금의 현실로 돌아오는 궤적을 그리고자 했습니다.>


2. 애프터 스쿨 액티비티
청소년기의 이야기입니다. 자전거 도둑을 색출하는 선생님과 하나둘 불려 가는 학생들, 그 뒤편의 이야기입니다.

반항기 가득한 청소년기의 이야기를 담고 싶었습니다. 오자키 유타카의 15살의 밤이라든지, 청소년기 이야기는 아니지만 브루스 스프링스틴의 본투런이라든지, 그런 곡들처럼요. 반항 어린 소년의 내달리는 표상 같은 거 있잖아요. 그치만 저는 안락한 아파트단지 안에서 부모님과 이웃분들의 충분한 사랑을 받으며 자랐습니다. 기억을 더듬어 가장 반항적인 장면을 꼽아보자면 헤비메탈의 심취한 나를 뽐내고 싶어 방 창문을 활짝 열고 오지 오스본의 음악을 크게 들은 것 그 정도가 있겠네요. 그렇기에 저는 그런 곡을 쓸 수는 없었습니다.
곡을 쓰며 청소년기의 그 아슬아슬한 선에 대한 추억 몇 개를 꺼내어보았는데, 하나는 곡의 주된 사건이 된.. 곡에서는 자전거로 표현이 됐지만 엠피쓰리 도난 사건의 용의자 선상에 들어 교무실에 불려 간 일입니다. 하나둘씩 불려 가고 있고 제가 생각해 낸 저의 결백을 증명할 한마디는 이거였습니다. “저 용량 더 크고 최신 꺼 있어요.” 십수 년은 더 지난 지금에 와 제 뇌리에 박힌 건 선생님의 돌아온 대답이었습니다. “그런 건 상관없어.” 저는 선생님이 그냥 저를 미워하시는 줄 알았거든요. 근데 좀 다른 이야기였습니다. 특히나 사춘기 아이들에게는 더. 3. 첫사랑은 안녕히-
타이틀곡입니다. 첫사랑은 생각보다 많은 걸 담고 있더라구요.. 이 곡은 첫사랑뿐만이 아닌 그렇게 어른이 되는 중간 지대에 있던 나에 대한 이야기이기도 합니다. 풋풋하지만은 않던 나의 이야기. 오랜 일이기에 별생각 없을 줄 알았는데 막상 가사를 쓰다 보니 혼자 가슴이 먹먹해지기도 했습니다. 그치만 뭐.. 웃으며 안녕히!!


4. 오 뉴욕시티
26살 처음으로 간 뉴욕 여행에서 큰 빌딩들을 보면서 복잡하고 많은 생각을 했습니다. 엠파이어스테이트 빌딩을 보면서 끓어오르는 야망이란 걸 처음 마주했습니다. 이후 마천루처럼 높은 꿈과 원대한 목표! 그리고 그로부터 얻는 큰 삶을 꿈꾸게 된 시절이 있었습니다. 그 시절의 시작을 돌이켜보는 곡입니다.
2022년 도형이와 형과 셋이 간 뉴욕 여행 중에 함께 완성한 곡입니다. 그날 녹음한 음성메모의 느낌을 그대로 내보고 싶어서 핸드폰 음성메모 파일을 기반으로 작업했습니다.


5. 잭 케루악 (feat. 양희은)
말 그대로 청춘에 대한 곡입니다. 위에 언급한 꿈과 야망에 휩싸인 청춘. 젊은 소용돌이라는 가사가 나오는데 제가 본 청춘은 그렇게 휘말리는 사건이라고 생각했습니다. 가사에 썼듯 펑펑 웃고 활짝 웃는, 그런 알 수 없는 정동에 휘말리는 시절이라고 생각합니다. 1, 2절 비슷한 가사여도 양희은 선생님과 제가 부르는 메시지가 온전히 다르게 느껴지는 게 좋아서 화음 파트를 삭제하고 오롯이 각각의 독백으로 완성하였습니다.


6. 마더 (feat. 이수현)
음악하는 친구들과 어울려 지내다 보면 이토록 철없는 삶을 살게 됩니다. 친구들 탓도 아니고 그냥 음악이라는 주제가 사람을 그렇게 만드는 것 같습니다. 동네 친구들은 하나둘 엄마아빠가 되고 있는데 말이죠. 친구 딸의 돌잔치에 다녀오는 길에 쓴 가사입니다. 나와 내 친구들이 엄마아빠가 되면 어떤 걸 전해주고 싶을까 생각해 봤습니다.
수현이는 어떨지 모르겠지만 저는 수현이를 제 가장 친한 동시대의 동료라고 생각합니다. 그래서 이 노래를 함께 하는 게 더욱 의미가 있다고 생각했습니다. 악뮤의 곡 맞짱에서도 제가 엄마 역할을 했었는데 작업이 연장선상에 있는 것도 같습니다.


7. 산사람
이 곡은 제가 어렴풋이 상상해 본 나이듦에 관한 곡입니다. 타령같이 들리는 게, 위의 마더에게서 태어난 아기를 업고 재우는 할머니 혹은 할아버지의 자장가 같기도 하고.. 그런 상상을 해봤습니다. 뒤의 가사를 제외하고는 마이크 앞에 앉아 실시간으로 가사를 쓰며 작업했는데 재밌는 작업이었습니다.


8. 여름에 관한 무용담 l
살면서 가장 여름다웠던 여름을 떠올리면서 작업했습니다. 후반부의 짜깁기처럼 배열된 나레이션과 도레미송을 패러디한 합창파트가 마음에 들어요. 곡을 만들면서 어떤 어떤 여름들이 주마등처럼 스쳐 지나가는 기분을 느꼈습니다. 그래서 여름에 대한 이야기를 쓰고 싶었고, 말 그대로 게릴라부대 요원 같았던 어떤 해 여름을 떠올리며 썼습니다.


9. 여름밤 차력쇼를 위한 TV광고 : 스웨트 앤 스타더스트 (skit)
뭐랄까요. 자기 브랜드화 된 잔나비식 여름과 환상에 대한 셀프 패러디입니다.


10. 미아의 추억과 유니버스
개인적으로 가장 마음에 드는 가사의 곡이에요. 2018년도에 만들어진 데모곡이구요. 전설에 수록될 예정이었으나 가사를 완성하지 못해 실리지 못했습니다. 가짜 프랑스어로 가이드를 했었거든요. 그러다 보니 한글 가사를 붙이기가 쉽지 않았습니다. 영감을 준 어느 가을 요새 옆 밭두렁의 귀뚜라미들에게 감사합니다.


11. 모든 소년 소녀들3 : 글로리
모소소 시리즈는 꿈에 대한 이야기입니다. 제 안엔 모소소 자아가 하나 있습니다. 현실로 돌아온 많은 이들과 손을 잡는 내용을 쓰고 싶었습니다. 가장 낮은 포복 위치에서 손을 잡으면서 우위를 순식간에 뒤집자는 언더독 이야기입니다. 한번 시작한 사투는 어떤 식으로든 끝나지 않습니다.


12. 사운드 오브 뮤직
우리는 음악을 사랑합니다. 세상 만물 중 최고로 아름답기에, 정말 절절하게 사랑합니다. 여러분에게도 음악이 큰 힘이 되기를 바랍니다. 리듬을 타듯 땅에 골고루 걸음을 찍어 대는 모든 지구인들의 잠 못드는 밤을 응원합니다.
