When I listen to this music, I feel like I'm sitting across from someone. Someone who's waiting for me with warm tea. Someone who has gentle eyes and warm hands, caressing my knees and telling me that it's okay, so talk. In front of someone like that, tears start to fall before I can even open my mouth.

The tears that burst out as soon as the warm performance begins may not stop for the entire forty minutes of the fourteen tracks. However, after crying like that, you will feel relief and healing as if you had poured out a hundred words. That is because Jeon Jin-hee's second album, Breathing, is 'music that listens to my story.'

Jeon Jin-hee is a talented musician who can write thousands of books using the language of the piano, but here, she never puts her own story first. She doesn’t hastily lead the listener by waving a flag about where to go. The subject of the speech is clearly hers, but in terms of content, it can be said that she plays a role closer to drawing out the other person’s story. Between the notes that flow and ring leisurely, we can feel an attitude of respect that responds intermittently but listens completely. That’s why we feel like we are ‘speaking’ while ‘listening’ to this music.

Let me surrender myself to his careful and thoughtful hands. The deep stories that were difficult to tell may naturally flow out. And in the end, peace will surely come.

전진희 [Breathing II]

이 음악들을 듣고 있으면 누군가와 마주 앉아있는 기분이 든다. 따뜻한 차를 준비해 놓고 나를 기다리던 사람. 온화한 눈을 하고 데워진 손으로 내 무릎을 쓰다듬으며 괜찮다고, 그러니 얘기해 보라고 말하는 사람. 그런 사람 앞에서는 입을 떼기도 전에 왈칵 눈물부터 난다.

체온을 머금은 연주가 시작되는 동시에 터진 눈물은 열네 트랙이 흐르는 사십여 분 내내 멈추지 않을 수도 있다. 그러나 그렇게 울고 난 뒤에는 백 마디 말을 쏟아낸 것과 같은 후련함과 치유가 따르리라. 그건 전진희의 Breathing 2집이 '내 이야기를 들어주는 음악'이기 때문이다.

전진희는 피아노라는 언어로 수천 권의 책을 써낼 수 있는 유능한 음악가이지만 여기서 결코 자기 이야기를 앞세우지 않는다. 어디로 가겠다고 깃발을 들고 성급히 청자를 리드하지도 않는다. 발화의 주체는 분명 그이지만, 내용만큼은 상대의 이야기를 끌어내는 역할에 가깝다고 해야 할까. 흐르는 대로 여유를 두고 울리는 노트 사이에서, 띄엄띄엄 호응하되 온전히 경청하는 존중의 태도가 느껴진다. 그래서 우리는 이 음악을 '듣고' 있는 동안 '말하고' 있다고 느낀다.

조심스럽고 사려 깊은 그의 손길에 순순히 나를 맡겨보라. 꺼내기 어려웠던 속 깊은 이야기들이 자연스레 흘러나올지 모른다. 그리고 그 끝에는 분명 평안이 찾아올 것이다.
