Description (Translated):

Since releasing her first solo work, [Piano and Voice] (2017), Jeon Jin-hee's first song on her album has always started with keyboard sounds. [After the Rain uuhu] is different. The core instrument is still the piano, but the string sound, which she wants to keep by her side for a long time, opens the door. While the keyboard instrument strikes the strings to express the sincerity of the moment, the string instrument persistently draws out emotions by rubbing the strings with the bow. In this album, Jeon Jin-hee did not arrange different time periods in parallel, but overlapped a single time in sequence. Rather than separating the dry land and wet air in the album title, which means after the rain, she made the past season and the coming season face each other in one place.
It is a story about the perspective of the whole, not a partial choice. If we compare, the previous 'Breathing series' (2021, 2025) is a fragmentary memoir of each month, and [After the Rain uuhu] is closer to a panorama or a series of landscapes according to the season. While the ecstatic melody in the composition and performance, and the careful strumming of each note reveal the same unique lyricism as before, the narrative of this album, which exists independently whether it is an instrumental piece or a song, and at the same time is connected with a more organic emotional line, makes us sense his universal world that extends and permeates even to places that cannot be reached by eyes and hands. It is the result of Jeon Jin-hee's intimate language, which comforted others by drawing out her own sensitivity and warmth, taking a step forward in courage.
Listening to the album, I feel the power of good arrangement and delicate performance anew. I was so absorbed in the music that focused on the emotion and scenery of the moment and the relative flow of the remaining time instead of a constant tempo and beat, and song-form that I had to hold my breath sometimes without realizing it. The string part (arranged by Taro Umebayashi, who is working as a producer for Ichiko Aoba) that is leisurely but powerfully pushes and pulls time, and Jeon Jin-hee's keyboard performance that hesitates and tries to capture the moment with a graceful touch are in perfect harmony. The time it takes to press a note, the silence until the next note sounds, and even the subtle vibration of the air become a rhythm. Jeon Jin-hee and her piano are always sparing with words, but it is not ambiguous or empty. Even in the two vocal tracks that come close to the ears, and in most moments when only her piano remains, the peak of sound remains the same. Beautiful melodies and harmonies, sounds and spaces are not just shown, but quietly discovered.
Excluding the piano solo version and live performance, the composition of the six songs is so regrettable that the seasons of [้›จๅพŒ uuhu] sometimes pass by in an instant, sometimes as if it were forever. As explained, the time of the album, which covers the flow from spring to winter, is not divided into obvious sections for each track. It redefines time by simply focusing on the moment and letting the season pass through the music. As a representative example, 'Soft Light' depicts the moment when the end of summer leads to fall, not a single season. It naturally continues from the previous track, which is titled 'summer to fall'. There is no perception that the same time is duplicated in the themes and compositions that repeat back and forth in one song. On a quiet and hot night, my heart and our seasons change as we gradually share light and temperature. 'Is It Okay', the only song that utilizes synth programming, prepares the flow of the cycle that continues with a dreamy mood and lingering feeling.
When the rain stops, the ground becomes darker and falls back, a damp, bloody smell seeps into the air, and objects take shape as if redefining the surface of the world. Of course, the scenery will return to how it was before the rain as if nothing had happened. The same goes for the seasons. After listening to all this music, wouldnโ€™t someoneโ€™s heart have changed a little? I confess that I couldnโ€™t follow the time that Jeon Jin-hee meticulously composed. After โ€œSoft Lightโ€ ended, I had to sit for over five minutes without making a sound, with the playback stopped. Beautiful music doesnโ€™t say or urge change, but becomes change itself.
โ€œButterflies donโ€™t count months, they only count moments. Thatโ€™s why they have enough time.โ€ The time in [้›จๅพŒ uuhu] reminds us of the poet Rabindranath Tagoreโ€™s words, โ€œa life that only counts moments.โ€ While showing the seasons that flow through the whole, it actually tries to stay in a moment. It is an attempt to engrave the sincerity of a moment into a note, and a vivid suggestion that slowly looks into the emotions and thoughts that we miss and pass by. โ€œAre you okay? Nevertheless, spring will come again.โ€ โ€“ Popular music critic Byungwook Chung
