Prequel to the birth of KAVE
[Say My Name] Where Past and Present Meet

The first single 'Venom' released last July was a prologue that introduced the rock band KAVE (Gaho/vocals, Kekinu/drums, Jisang/guitar, Hyun/piano/keyboard, Owner/keyboard/DJ). It emphasized another self within humans and announced a new beginning. 'Venom' was soon followed by the full-length album [Flight of Ideas]. The first EP [Flight of Ideas] confirmed the strength of the lineup in which all members are producers, and embodied the differentiated and advanced present of rock.

KAVE, who completed his second EP [Say My Name] just three months after his debut, used the term 'prequel' when introducing the album. [Say My Name] is the sequel to [Flight of Ideas] and the story is set in the past. It is a story that shows the process of recognizing one's inner self in reverse order, solving the curiosity of the previous work.

Compared to the previous album, which created a new rock sound by incorporating gothic, ethnic, and Latin moods, this album is closer to the original form of rock. It feels like the five members of KAVE are introducing the music they have been enjoying since childhood. The overall atmosphere of the album can be approached as a genre called 'industrial rock'. You can feel the 'industrial rock' style in the fast and thick heavy metal sound, rough instrument tone, crazy development, and active use of electronic instruments and sampling, and the gothic atmosphere and catchy melodies are reminiscent of Marilyn Manson. Of course, just like the first EP, it expresses the rock style that was popular in the 90s, but it does not let go of new attempts oriented toward the future. KAVE adds, 'It is a prequel to the previous work, but it is a present-continuous tense that goes deeper than that.'

[Say My Name] EP contains a total of 7 songs. Among them, the main title song is 'You'. It is a pop rock number that samples 'Winter' from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Unlike the strong flow that has continued since their debut, it contains a story that anyone can relate to, and it is composed in a popular way with the melody at the center. It is noticeable that the lyrics are all in English. At first glance, it feels like listening to a popular pop song.

The song chosen as the double title is 'Stone'. Unlike 'You', it is a typical industrial rock number. It strongly expresses painful emotions through the theme of 'Monster'. KAVE's unique sound is combined with prepared piano to add unique emotions to the explosive energy.

The intro track, 'Achoo', foreshadows the industrial style that runs throughout the album. It unravels the sounds of hope and anxiety with themes of war and coughing, and the DJ part that creates a grand atmosphere is impressive.

'Umm Umm Umm' is an experimental song with the color of a ballad. It shows off its outstanding ability to sing by boldly changing the pitch and speed of the instrument sound. The following 'Follow Me' also has the same charm. In both songs, the part where it lively utilizes classical piano sounds that at first glance do not go well with rock is attractive.

'Say My Name' and 'Blue' stand out for their emotional depth. You can feel Gaho's appealing vocal power, and despite the slow tempo, the thick sound completes the intensity.

KAVE 탄생의 프리퀄
과거와 현재가 만난 [Say My Name]

지난 7월 발표한 첫 싱글 'Venom'은 록밴드 KAVE(가호/Gaho/보컬, 케키누/Kekinu/드럼, 지상/Jisang/기타, 현/Hyun/피아노/키보드, 오너/Ownr/키보드/DJ)를 알리는 프롤로그였다. 인간의 내면에 있는 또 다른 자아를 강조하며 새로운 시작을 예고했다. 'Venom'은 곧 본편 [Flight of Ideas]로 이어졌다. 첫 번째 EP [Flight of Ideas]는 멤버 전원이 프로듀서라는 라인업의 강점을 확인시키며, 분화하고 진보한 록의 현재를 구현했다.

데뷔 3개월 만에 두 번째 EP [Say My Name]을 완성한 KAVE는 앨범을 소개하며 '프리퀄'이라는 용어를 사용했다. [Say My Name]이 [Flight of Ideas]의 후속작이며 그 시점이 과거라는 이야기다. 내면의 자아를 인식하게 된 과정을 역순으로 보여주며 전작의 궁금증을 풀어주는 전개다.

전작이 고딕, 에스닉, 라틴 무드까지 녹여내며 새로운 록사운드를 만들어 낸 데 비해, 이번 앨범은 록의 원형에 더 가깝다. KAVE의 다섯 멤버가 어린 시절부터 품고 있었던 음악을 소개하는 느낌이다. 전반적인 앨범의 분위기는 '인더스트리얼록'이라는 장르로 접근 가능하다. 빠르고 두터운 헤비메탈 사운드, 거친 악기 톤, 광기 어린 전개, 전자 악기와 샘플링의 적극적인 활용에서 '인더스트리얼록' 스타일을 느낄 수 있으며, 고딕스러운 분위기와 귀에 꽂히는 멜로디는 마릴린 맨슨을 떠올리게 한다. 물론 첫 EP와 마찬가지로 90년대 유행한 록 스타일을 표현하면서도 미래 지향의 새로운 시도들을 놓지 않았다. KAVE는 '전작에 대한 프리퀄이면서도 거기서 더 깊게 빠지는 현재 진행형'이라 첨언한다.

[Say My Name] EP에는 총 7곡이 수록되었다. 그중 메인 타이틀 곡은 'You'. 비발디의 사계 중 '겨울'을 샘플링한 팝록 넘버다. 데뷔 이후 이어진 강렬한 흐름과 달리 누구나 공감할 수 있는 이야기를 담았으며 멜로디를 중심에 두고 대중적인 구성으로 풀어냈다. 가사 전체가 영어라는 점이 눈에 띈다. 언뜻 들으면 유행하는 팝송을 듣고 있는 느낌이다.

더블 타이틀로 낙점된 곡은 'Stone'이다. 'You'와 달리 전형적인 인더스트리얼록 넘버다. 'Monster'라는 테마를 통해 고통스러운 감정을 강력하게 발산한다. KAVE 특유의 사운드에 프리페어드 피아노를 더해 폭발적인 에너지 안에 독특한 감정을 더했다.

인트로 트랙인 'Achoo'는 앨범 전체에 깔린 인더스트리얼 스타일을 예고한다. 희망과 불안의 소리를 전쟁과 기침이라는 테마로 풀어냈으며, 웅장한 분위기를 가르는 DJ 파트가 인상적이다.

'음음음 (Umm Umm Umm)'은 광시곡의 색채를 띠는 실험적인 곡이다. 악기의 소리는 물론 음의 높낮이와 속도를 과감하게 변화시키며 돋보이는 곡 소화 능력을 보여줬다. 이어지는 'Follow Me'에도 같은 매력이 담겼다. 두 곡 모두, 언뜻 록과 어울리지 않는 클래시컬한 피아노 사운드를 재기발랄하게 활용한 부분이 매력적이다.

'Say My Name'과 'Blue'에서는 감정의 깊이가 두드러진다. 호소력 짙은 가호의 보컬 파워를 느낄 수 있으며, 속도가 빠르지 않음에도 두터운 사운드가 강렬함을 완성한다.
