The definitive Korean psychedelic rock album
1973 was the peak of Shin Jung-hyun's musical career, when his psychedelic sound was at its peak. Kim Jung-mi's 4th regular album 'NOW', which was first released that year on Sung-eum Records (Fontana), is widely known overseas and is praised as the pinnacle of Korean psychedelic rock albums. The early versions, produced with embossed covers, are so rare that they have long been the targets of rock record collectors at home and abroad. All of Kim Jung-mi's albums have contributed to the revival of analog records by drawing public interest in popular music LPs. In particular, this album, which contains the essence of Shin Jung-hyun's psychedelic sound, is considered one of Shin Jung-hyun's three greatest albums, along with 'Edward's First Album' and 'Shin Jung-hyun and the Yupjeons' 1st Album' from 1964.

Most reissues of a single album since 2003
Kim Jung-mi's 4th album 'NOW', which even had a fan cafe in an internet community in the 2000s, is the most preferred album among rock fans in Korea and abroad among her albums. The countless reissues and sold-out parades, to the point that it is even sadly called a 'bone-dead album', are proof of this. This album was reissued on CD in 2002, and if you include the blue color version from Yejeon Media, which holds the copyright, it has been reissued a total of 9 times (11 versions in total), including 7 LPs (9 versions) and 2 CDs, both in Korea and abroad. It is difficult to make a definitive statement based on the entire history of pop albums, but since 2003, when LP reissues began in earnest, it has been on a streak of reissues as a single album with the most reissues.
The start of LP reissues was made by Beatball in 2003. Since then, Rhythm On has included a black and white and a small amount of blue color LPs in 2009, a CD in 2012, a single picture LP in 2013, and even a picture version LP of this album in Kim Jung-mi's second box in 2017. Of these, the 2009 Rhythm On version added a rare 7-inch single LP of Kim Jung-mi that was produced in small quantities by Seong-eum right before the release of her fourth album as a bonus. The LP reissues by Rhythm On in 2009 and Lion Production in the United States in 2011 weighed 180g. All reissued versions of this album have sold out, and the clear blue color LP produced by Lion Production in 2011 has proven its continued popularity by selling out in an instant despite its high price of 130,000 won for a limited edition of 99 copies in 2021.

Psychedelic sounds performed by Shin Jung-hyun and The Man
Shin Jung-hyun has experimented with combining traditional Korean music and rock through the numerous bands he has formed. This album was recorded with performances by The Man, which he formed when his music was at its peak. It is without a doubt the greatest masterpiece created by the Shin Jung-hyun-Kim Jung-mi duo. The cover photo, featuring Kim Jung-mi and red cosmos against a blue sky, was taken by Shin Jung-hyun himself. Cosmos symbolizes psychedelic. Immediately after the album was released, Kim Jung-mi expressed her satisfaction with the album in a media interview, saying, “I studied a lot to find my own unique song characteristics. I am also practicing my dance moves to psychedelic rhythms with hallucinatory and avant-garde rhythms. This is my true self.”
This album is a feast of Korean psychedelic masterpieces with no missing songs. The album opens with <햇님>. This song, which was first included on a 7-inch single, is a masterpiece of Kim Jung-mi's singing that creates a languidly dreamy atmosphere combined with gentle instrumentation. <봄>, <애쁜강산>, <고독한 마음>, and <나도 굴림>, which attempts to combine Korean traditional music and rock, are all psychedelic masterpieces of 'Shin Joong-hyun and The Man' that are acknowledged by everyone. The original version of the immortal masterpiece <애쁜강산> is the Park Kwang-soo vocal version included in the Jang Hyun and The Man album. The remake version by Lee Sun-hee, which later became a big hit, is the most famous, but Kim Jung-mi's version allows us to experience a different realm optimized for psychedelic. Kim Jung-mi had already released this song on her previous 3rd album. I also look forward to the re-release of the rare version sung by Kim Sung-chul of Shin Jung-hyun's band, which was released slightly before Kim Jung-mi's.
<Lonely Heart>, which gently penetrates the heart, is a masterpiece that I would like to recommend as a must-listen repertoire as it was included in all of Kim Jung-mi's debut albums, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums. It would be fun to listen to it compared to the widely known remake versions by Jang Hyun and Kim Chu-ja. I also recommend listening to the hidden psychedelic masterpieces by Shin Jung-hyun, <Your Dream> and <I Don't Know>, compared to the original versions released by Yang Hee-eun in 1972. <Lonely Heart>, <Your Dream>, and <I Don't Know> were included in the 3rd and 4th albums along with <Blow the Spring Wind> and <It's Raining>. The ending song <Ganadaraba> is a regular version that was included for the third time on this album, following the 1st and 2nd albums.

Optimized for Shin Jung-hyun's psychedelic
Kim Jung-mi was a singer who embodied an erotic atmosphere with her voluptuous body, sexy and passionate dance, and nasal voice. Shin Jung-hyun was able to further fuel his desire for musical experimentation after meeting Kim Jung-mi, a singer who was optimized for the Korean psychedelic style he pursued. It is unfair to think of her as a “Kim Chu-ja stand-in.” Although Kim Chu-ja was one step ahead in vocal range and emotional processing, Kim Jung-mi was the persona who understood and digested Shin Jung-hyun’s psychedelic genre the best. Shin Jung-hyun testified in an interview, “Although her vocal volume was somewhat inferior to Kim Chu-ja’s, her vocal range was actually wider, and there was no singer who understood and digested the psychedelic sound as well as Kim Jung-mi.”

'Shin Joong-hyun's Psychedelic = Kim Jung-mi' Becomes One Equation
After releasing her 4th album, Kim Jung-mi entered the popular music charts in 1974 and rose to the ranks of top singers. She was selected as the cover model for the weekly magazine Sunday Seoul twice, and her 1975 article about her purchase of a New Cortina passenger car is proof of her popularity at the time. The song <Cigarette Butt> from the compilation album that Kim Jung-mi adorned the cover of in September 1974 vibrates with a psychedelic scent, just as rumors say, “It symbolizes marijuana.” The sweetness of the summit was short-lived. In 1975, Shin Jung-hyun’s original songs that Kim Jung-mi sang were banned under the pretext of being vulgar and decadent. In an interview with Weekly Korea at the time, Kim Jung-mi lamented, “Overnight, I was reduced to a singer without original songs.” In December 1975, Kim Jung-mi, who was mistaken for a marijuana singer due to Shin Jung-hyun’s arrest, had to undergo a police investigation.
All of her albums were discarded like Shin Jung-hyun's fate and turned into rare records. After two years of silence, Kim Jung-mi made a comeback in 1977. This was the moment when she, who had shone brightly in collaboration with Shin Jung-hyun, fell to being an ordinary trot singer. Kim Jung-mi disappeared from the public eye after her solo album released by Oasis in 1978. The last news of her was that she was recuperating at Yongmunsa Temple in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province. She currently resides in the United States. Just like Shin Jung-hyun, who was re-evaluated as the godfather of Korean rock, Kim Jung-mi was also belatedly re-evaluated as the 'empress of Korean psychedelic.' 한국 사이키델릭 록 음반의 결정판
1973년은 신중현의 사이키델릭 사운드가 최고조에 달했던 음악인생의 절정기였다. 그해 성음레코드(fontana)에서 최초 공개된 김정미 정규 4집 'NOW'는 해외까지 널리 알려진 한국 사이키델릭 록 앨범의 최고봉으로 칭송된다. 엠보싱 커버로 제작된 초반은 너무나 희귀해 국내외 록 음반 수집가들의 표적이 된지 오래다. 김정미의 모든 음반은 대중가요 LP에 대한 대중의 관심을 이끌어내며 아날로그 음반부활에 일조한 공로가 있다. 특히 신중현 사이키델릭 사운드의 정수가 담긴 이 앨범은 1964년의 '에드훠의 첫 앨범'과 '신중현과 엽전들 1집'과 더불어 신중현 3대 명반으로 손꼽힌다.

2003년 이후 단일 음반 최다 재발매
2000년대 들어 인터넷 커뮤니티에 팬 카페까지 생겨난 김정미의 4집 'NOW'는 그녀가 남긴 음반들 중에서 국내외 록 마니아들이 가장 선호하는 명반이다. '사골 음반'이란 웃픈 평가가 있을 정도로 수없이 이어지는 재발매와 매진 퍼레이드가 그 증거이다. 이 앨범은 2002년 CD 재발매를 도화선으로 이번에 판권을 지닌 예전미디어의 블루 컬러 버전까지 더하면 국내외 통틀어 LP 7번(9가지 버전), CD 2번 등 도합 9번(총 11가지 버전)이 재 발매되었다. 가요음반 전체 역사로는 단정하기 어렵지만 LP 재발매가 본격화된 2003년 이후 단일 음반으로는 최다 재발매 행진을 벌이고 있다.
LP 재발매의 스타트는 2003년 비트볼이 끊었다. 이후 리듬온에서 2009년 흑백과 소량의 블루 컬러 LP, 2012년 CD, 2013년 단품 픽처LP, 2017년 김정미의 두 번째 박스에는 이 앨범의 픽쳐 버전 LP까지 포함시켰다. 이 중 2009년 리듬온 버전은 4집 발매 직전 성음에서 소량 제작한 김정미의 진귀한 7인치 싱글 LP를 보너스로 추가했다. 2009년 리듬온과 2011년 미국라이온(Lion)프로덕션의 재발매 LP는 180g 중량반이다. 이 앨범의 모든 재발매 버전은 매진 신화를 이뤄냈고 2011년 제작한 라이온 프로덕션의 클리어 블루 컬러 LP는 2021년에 99장 한정으로 13만원의 고가 책정에도 불구하고 순식간에 품절되는 진풍경을 연출하며 여전한 인기를 증명했다.

신중현과 더 맨이 연주한 사이키델릭 사운드
신중현은 자신이 결성한 수많은 밴드들을 통해 한국 전통음악과 록을 접목하는 음악실험을 거듭했다. 이 음반은 그의 음악이 정점에 달했던 시기에 결성한 더맨의 연주로 녹음했다. 단언하건데 신중현-김정미 콤비가 이뤄낸 최고의 걸작이다. 파란하늘을 배경으로 빨간 코스모스와 김정미가 어우러진 커버 사진은 신중현이 직접 촬영했다. 코스모스는 사이키델릭을 상징한다. 앨범 발매 직후 김정미는 언론 인터뷰에서 “저만의 노래다운 특징을 찾아내려고 많이 연구했어요. 춤도 환각적이고 전위적인 율동으로 사이키델릭에 맞추어 연습하고 있어요. 이게 저의 참다운 모습입니다”라고 앨범에 만족감을 표했다.
이 앨범은 뺄 곡이 없는 한국 사이키델릭 명곡의 성찬이다. 앨범의 문은 <햇님>이 열어 제친다. 7인치 싱글에 먼저 수록되었던 이 곡은 잔잔한 연주와 어우러진 나른하게 몽환적인 분위기를 연출하는 김정미의 가창이 압권이다. <봄>, <아름다운 강산>, <고독한 마음> 그리고 한국전통음악과 록의 접목을 시도한 <나도 몰래> 등은 '신중현과 더 맨'의 사이키델릭 걸작으로 자타가 인정하는 명곡들이다. 불멸의 명곡 <아름다운 강산>의 오리지널 버전은 장현과 더 맨 음반에서 수록된 박광수 보컬 버전이다. 훗날 이 노래를 빅히트시킨 이선희의 리메이크버전이 가장 유명하지만 김정미 버전은 사이키델릭에 최적화된 다른 경지를 체험시켜준다. 김정미는 이 곡을 전작인 3집에서 이미 발표했었다. 김정미보다 다소 앞서 발표한 신중현사단의 김성철이 부른 진귀한 버전도 재발매되길 기대해 본다.
잔잔하게 심장을 파고드는 <고독한 마음>은 김정미의 데뷔음반부터 2, 3, 4집에 모두 수록되었을 정도로 필청 레퍼토리로 추천하고 싶은 명곡이다. 널리 알려진 장현과 김추자의 리메이크 버전과 비교해 듣는 재미가 있을 것 같다. 숨겨진 신중현 사이키데릭 명곡인 <당신의 꿈>과 <나도 몰래>도 1972년에 발표된 양희은의 오리지널 버전과 비교해 들어보길 추천한다. <고독한 마음>, <당신의 꿈>, <나도 몰래>는 <불어라 봄바람>과 <비가 오네>와 더불어 3집과 4집에 중복 수록되었다. 엔딩곡 <가나다라바>는 1, 2집에 이어 이 앨범에 세 번째로 수록된 단골 버전이다.

신중현의 사이키델릭에 최적화
김정미는 볼륨감 넘치는 몸매, 섹시하고 열정적인 춤, 비음 섞인 목소리로 에로틱한 분위기를 탁월하게 구현한 가수였다. 신중현은 자신이 추구했던 한국적 사이키델릭에 최적화된 가수 김정미를 만나면서 음악 실험에 대한 욕구를 한층 불태울 수 있었다. 그녀가 '김추자 대역' 정도로 기억되는 것은 부당한 평가다. 음폭이나 감정 처리는 김추자가 한 수 위지만, 사이키델릭 장르에 있어 김정미는 신중현의 사이키델릭을 가장 잘 이해하고 소화해낸 페르소나였다. 신중현은 한 인터뷰에서 “김추자에 비해 성량은 다소 떨어졌지만 음폭은 오히려 넓었던 김정미만큼 사이키델릭 사운드를 이해하고 소화해낸 가수는 없었다.”고 증언했다.

하나의 등식이 된 '신중현의 사이키델릭=김정미'
4집 발표 이후 1974년 김정미는 인기가요 차트에 진입하며 톱 가수의 대열에 올랐다. 주간지 선데이 서울 표지모델로 두 차례나 선정되었고 1975년에는 뉴코티나 승용차 구입 기사는 당시의 인기를 반증한다. 1974년 9월 김정미가 커버를 장식한 컴필레이션 음반 수록곡 <담배꽁초>는 '대마초를 상징한다.'는 풍문처럼 사이키델릭 향기가 진동한다. 정상의 달콤함은 짧았다. 1975년 김정미가 노래한 신중현의 창작곡들은 창법저속, 퇴폐라는 미명으로 금지족쇄가 채워졌다. 당시 주간한국과의 인터뷰에서 김정미는 “하루아침에 나는 오리지널 노래가 없는 가수 신세로 전락해 버렸다.”고 한탄했다. 1975년 12월 신중현의 구속으로 대마초가수로 오인 받은 김정미는 경찰조사를 받아야 했다.
그녀의 모든 음반들은 신중현의 운명처럼 폐기되어 희귀음반으로 둔갑했다. 2년여의 침묵 끝에 김정미는 1977년 재기했다. 신중현과의 협업에서 찬란하게 빛났던 그녀가 평범한 트로트 가수로 전락되는 순간이다. 1978년 오아시스에서 낸 독집을 마지막으로 김정미는 대중의 시야에서 사라졌다. 경기도 양평의 용문사에서 요양하던 모습이 그녀의 마지막 소식이었다. 현재 그녀는 미국에 거주하고 있다. 한국 록의 대부로 재평가된 신중현처럼 김정미도 '한국 사이키델릭의 여제'로 뒤늦게 재평가되었다.
