'Master Vocalist' Koo Chang-mo's First New Album in 36 Years

How full of hope were the youth of our Baby Boom generation as they shouted and ran beneath the clear white clouds? (Oh Youth! Oh Greenery! Let's run!!) From "Clouds and Me" at the legendary Beach Song Festival in 1978 until his retirement in 1991, what Koo Chang-mo, the "Prince of 70s and 80s Vocals," left behind are moments that made our hearts burn with passion and trajectories that shine brightly in music history. The core of the monumental songs that elevated Songolmae to the status of a band legend today—"The Day We Met," "I Will Love You All," and "The Moment I First Saw You"—lies in Koo Chang-mo's electrifying, thrilling vocals, which drive the band from both the forefront and the background. Once he joined Songolmae, the band ushered in its golden age.

Even though he distanced himself from music after retiring and transforming into a businessman, the name Koo Chang-mo remained a fixture in surveys on "Singers of Our Time" for a long time. His beautiful voice, exceptional vocal control and energy, and flexibility complete with a sense of rhythm—particularly the natural singing ability that bursts forth gracefully in the high register as conveyed in "Once Again," a track from his second album—made him perfectly worthy of being called a "vocal actor." He integrated the North and South poles—the wild, frenetic rock vocals and the calm, genuine ballad touch—and the opposites of rough courage and sharp sorrow, into his vocals.

The latter expressive domain was established during his solo career, which shifted its focus from rock to pop, and songs like "Hinari," "Mature as Much as It Hurts," and "Lonely, Lonely" demonstrate his excellence in delivering a poignant yet stable vocal tone. From this point on, his songs were loved not only by the youth but also by adults. Furthermore, he was a master of the musical staff who composed numerous masterpieces of the era. From "A Song Far Away," a 1984 hit by Lee Seung-jae that was played by the late Lee Sun-kyun in "My Mister," to songs written by Koo Chang-mo—Songolmae's "The Day We Met by Chance" alone proves that he is a great songwriter.

Titled "The One I Met Again," this album—his first in 36 years—features two new tracks and serves as an homage sequel to "The One I Met by Chance." Amidst surging funk rhythms, it overflows with the wild vitality within order that he never loses, regardless of the genre he sings. Surprisingly, the other new track, "Lover of the Earth," features a CCM operatic style. An unpredictable free spirit. Ultimately, his musical territory is the passion and inclusiveness conceived by freedom.

His progress based on this foundation continues to earn trust, allowing Koo Chang-mo's listeners to absorb a wealth of emotion. The virtue that runs through his new songs and past hits is youth. It is youth that stimulates the album title, 'Memory,' and the true nature of the 'future' he proposes is also youth. He is truly young. This elicits gasps of admiration. 희고 맑은 구름 아래 외치고 달려가며 우리 베이비붐 세대 청춘은 얼마나 희망에 차 있었는지. (젊음이여! 푸르름이여! 달려간다!!) 1978년 전설적인 해변가요제의 '구름과 나'부터 1991년 은퇴할 때까지 '7080 보컬 황태자' 구창모가 남긴 것들은 우리의 가슴을 뜨겁게 끓어오르게 했던 순간들이며 음악 역사에서도 광채를 발하는 궤적들이다. 오늘날 송골매를 밴드 전설로 승화시킨 기념비적 곡들 '어쩌다 마주친 그대', '모두 다 사랑하리', '처음 본 순간'은 전면과 배후에서 추동하는 구창모의 감전(感電)될 것 같은 짜릿한 보컬이 핵심이다. 그가 송골매에 들어오고 밴드는 전성기를 열었다.

은퇴 이후 사업자로 변신하면서 음악과 멀어졌어도 '우리 시대의 가수' 설문조사에서 오래도록 구창모란 이름은 붙박이였다. 미성에다 음의 빼어난 장악력과 에너지, 거기에 리듬감까지 갖춘 유연함, 특히 2집 수록곡 '다시 한번'이 전하는 유려하게 고음역 대에서 터져 나오는 타고난 가창력은 '보컬 배우'로 불리기에 손색이 없었다. 휘두르는 '발광' 록 보컬과 차분한 '진정' 발라드 터치라는 N과 S극, 거친 용맹과 예리한 슬픔이란 대척을 그는 보컬로 통합한 것이다.
