The famous 80s duo that pioneered the pop ballad genre
There are countless golden duos who have been guaranteed box office success in any era. When discussing singer Lee Moon-sae, composer Lee Young-hoon is a key figure. Composer Lee Young-hoon was the primary contributor to Lee Moon-sae's rise to stardom. Their collaboration, which produced countless romantic ballad masterpieces with beautiful lyrics and melodies, was a blue chip in the 1980s pop music scene. Their meaningful partnership, which began with Lee Moon-sae's third album in 1985, led to a relentless run that established the equation, "An album release equals a hit."

Our first meeting at Shinchon Blues' Eom In-ho's office
Lee Moon-se began to establish himself as a singer with "Happy Person" and "Blue Bird" from his second album. One day in 1985, Lee Moon-se stopped by Eom In-ho's office at Sinchon Blues and had a fateful encounter with composer Lee Young-hoon. In a press interview, Lee Moon-se recalled his first meeting with Lee Young-hoon: "Someone around my age was playing 'Girl,' and it was simply shocking. It touched my heart. I immediately went over and asked if he could give me the song. Lee Young-hoon replied, 'I'm an amateur. It won't even be a hit.' I immediately told him I wanted to sing the songs I wanted to sing, not the popular ones." The two hit it off and began working on their new album. Lee Young-hoon's then-unfinished, elegant love song, empowered by Lee Moon-se's voice, became a defining pop ballad of the era.

Pioneering the pop ballad genre
This album marks the debut collaboration between Lee Moon-sae and Lee Young-hoon. While not all of the songs are by Lee Young-hoon, six are by Lee Young-hoon, excluding "Wild Horse" and "Alone on a Night, Rain Falls" (written by Lee Jung-sun) and "Forever with You" (written by Yoo Jae-ha). Arranged by Lee Jung-sun and Kim Myung-gon, several songs from this album became hits. The title track, "I Don't Know Yet," as well as "Whistle," and "Girl" (소녀), are masterpieces that elevated the standards of 1980s Korean pop music and pioneered a new genre called "pop ballad." Lee Young-hoon bridged the often-ambiguous boundaries between folk and ballad with a clear and sophisticated phrasing, incorporating classical music techniques and string instruments. Oh Hyuk's remake of "Girl," a song from the tvN drama "Reply 1988," evoked nostalgia and topped major music charts in 2016.

<I Don't Know Yet>, which gave us our first Golden Cup
Almost all of Lee Moon-sae's hit songs remembered by the public are likely composed by Lee Young-hoon. Released in November 1985, the songs from this album gradually gained popularity through word of mouth, primarily through radio, which had been a powerful influence until then. The songs' influence then spread to terrestrial television, ultimately dominating the charts across various mass media. The title track, "I Don't Know Yet," with its lyrical, sweet, and sophisticated vibe, topped KBS TV's "Gayo Top 10" on June 18, 1986, seven months after its release. It held the top spot for five consecutive weeks until July 16, earning Lee Moon-sae his first Golden Cup.
In a press interview, Lee Moon-se reflected on "I Don't Know Yet," saying, "Lee Young-hoon's song was really good, but it was a bit difficult. It had a lot of classical elements. After recording, I asked for just one easier song. The melody just came out of the box in 30 minutes in the practice room. The lyrics came out of the box, too. I sang it all in one go the next day. That song was like a blessing, a blessing to me."

The signal of the golden combination
Although he achieved stardom by establishing his presence as a singer, Lee Moon-sae prioritized radio over mainstream media, particularly TV, for his marketing strategy. At the time, producing albums through a dedicated composer system and focusing on performances were novel ideas that other singers found difficult to pursue. Lee Moon-sae's confidence was fueled by the exceptional songs composed by Lee Young-hoon. The pop ballad genre they pioneered was later passed on to artists like Byun Jin-seop, Shin Seung-hoon, and Jo Sung-mo, ushering in the "golden age of ballads." This album, packed with countless masterpieces from the 1980s, sold 1.5 million copies, becoming a million-seller. 팝 발라드 장르를 제시한 80년대 명콤비
어느 시대나 '흥행 보증수표'가 되었던 황금 콤비는 무수하다. 특히 가수 이문세를 언급할 때 작곡가 이영훈은 빠트릴 수 없는 인물이다. 작곡가 이영훈은 이문세를 대형 스타로 만든 1등 공신이었다. 아름다운 가사와 선율을 지닌 낭만적인 발라드 명곡을 무수하게 빚어낸 두 사람의 조합은 1980년대 대중가요계의 블루칩이었다. 1985년 이문세 3집부터 시작된 두 사람의 의미심장했던 동행은 “음반 발표가 곧 히트”라는 하나의 등식을 성립시키는 거침없는 질주로 이어졌다.

신촌블루스 엄인호 사무실에서의 첫 만남
이문세는 2집에서 <행복한 사람>과 <파랑새>로 가수로서 존재감을 찾기 시작했다. 1985년 어느 날, 신촌블루스의 엄인호 사무실에 들른 이문세는 그곳에서 작곡가 이영훈과 운명적인 만남을 가졌다. 이문세는 언론 인터뷰에서 “내 연배쯤 되는 사람이 <소녀>를 연주하고 있었는데 한마디로 충격이었다. 내 심장을 치더라. 곧바로 가서 곡을 줄 수 없느냐고 물었다. 그러자 이영훈 씨는 '나는 아마추어입니다. 히트도 안 될 거구요'라고 답했다. 나는 바로 대중적인 것보다 내가 하고픈 노래를 부르고 싶다고 말했다.”고 이영훈과의 첫 만남에 대해 회고했다. 의기투합한 두 사람은 신보 준비에 들어갔다. 당시 미완의 상태였던 이영훈의 격조 깊은 사랑 노래는 이문세의 목소리에 힘입어 시대를 대표하는 팝 발라드로 완성되었다.

팝 발라드 장르 개척
이 앨범은 이문세와 이영훈이 콤비를 이뤄 발표한 첫 작품이다. 전곡은 아니지만 이정선이 쓴 <야생마>, <혼자 있는 밤, 비는 내리고>, 유재하가 쓴 <그대와 영원히>를 제외한 6곡은 이영훈의 작품이다. 이정선과 김명곤이 편곡을 맡은 이 앨범에서 여러 곡이 히트했다. 타이틀곡 <난 아직 모르잖아요>를 비롯해 <휘파람>, <소녀> 등은 1980년대 한국 대중가요의 수준을 한 단계 끌어올린 '팝 발라드'라는 새로운 장르를 제시한 명곡들이다. 이영훈은 포크와 발라드 사이의 모호한 장르적 경계를, 현악기가 가미된 클래식 음악 기법을 도입해 명쾌하고도 세련된 어법으로 구분했다. tvN 드라마「응답하라 1988」OST 중 오혁이 리메이크한 <소녀>는 추억을 자극하며 2016년 주요 음원 차트에서 1위를 차지했다.

첫 골든컵을 안겨준 <난 아직 모르잖아요>
대중이 기억하는 이문세의 거의 모든 히트곡은 이영훈이 작곡한 노래들일 가능성이 크다. 1985년 11월 세상에 던져진 이 앨범의 수록곡들은 그때까지 막강한 영향력을 지녔던 라디오를 중심으로 서서히 입소문을 타기 시작했다. 노래들의 위력은 지상파 TV로 인기가 옮겨갔고, 결국 각종 대중매체 인기 차트의 최상위 점령으로 갈무리 되었다. 서정적이고 감미로우면서도 고급스러운 분위기의 타이틀곡 <난 아직 모르잖아요>는 발매 7개월 후인 1986년 6월 18일 KBS TV「가요톱10」에서 1위에 등극했다. 이후 7월 16일까지 5주 연속 정상을 굳건히 지키며 이문세에게 처음으로 골든컵을 안겨주었다.
이문세는 언론 인터뷰에서 <난 아직 모르잖아요>에 대해 “이영훈 씨의 곡이 너무 좋았지만 좀 어려웠어요. 클래식한 요소가 많았지요. 녹음이 다 끝난 상태에서 조금 쉬운 곡 한곡만 있었으면 좋겠다고 했어요. 연습실에서 30분 만에 멜로디가 쫙 나온 거예요. 가사도 그 자리에서 막 나왔어요. 노래도 다음날 한 번에 부른 겁니다. 그 노래는 마치 저에게 은혜를 준, 축복 같은 곡이었죠.”라고 회고했다.

황금 콤비의 신호탄
가수로서 존재감을 획득하며 스타덤에 올랐지만 이문세는 주류 매체인 TV보다 라디오를 통한 마케팅 전략을 펼쳤다. 당시 전담 작곡가 시스템을 통한 음반 제작, 공연 중심의 활동은 다른 가수들이 시도하기 어려운 신선한 발상이었다. 그런 이문세의 자신감은 이영훈이 만든 뛰어난 노래들이 있었기에 가능했다. 이들이 제시한 팝 발라드 장르는 이후 변진섭, 신승훈, 조성모 등으로 이어지며 '발라드 전성시대'를 불러왔다. 80년대의 명품 발라드가 무수하게 수록된 이 음반은 150만 장의 판매고를 기록하며 밀리언셀러가 되었다. 이 앨범은 이문세-이영훈 황금 콤비의 전성시대 개막을 알리는 뜨거운 신호탄이었다. /최규성 대중문화평론가. 한국대중가요연구소 대표
