Lee Moon-se's 4th studio album, released in 1987, is one of the best albums of the 1980s that led to the revival of popular music. If the period before the 1986 Seoul Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics was the era of pop songs, the period after that was the turning point that transitioned into the era of popular songs. During this period, when international sports events were successfully concluded and the value of our culture began to be recognized, a flood of popular song masterpieces and masterpieces that were comparable to foreign pop songs were released. The pop song programs that dominated the radio at the time also gradually began to give way to the strong invasion of popular songs.

The first album produced solely with Lee Young-hoon's works
The pop ballad created by singer Lee Moon-se and composer Lee Young-hoon shook up the landscape of Korean pop music in the 80s. On March 10, 1987, two years after the release of his 3rd album, which made his presence known as a million-seller, Lee Moon-se's 4th full-length album was released amid great expectations. This album, filled with the scent of famous songs, is actually the first album produced solely with the works of composer Lee Young-hoon. Guitarists Kim Gwang-seok and Ham Chun-ho's sessions and Kim Myeong-gon's arrangements added weight to the album.
<When Love Passes> and <Only the Sound of That Woman's Laughter> are luxury pop ballads colored with sophisticated diction and delicate sensibility. <Where the Night Stays> composed of string performances by the Kim Dong-seok Orchestra, <When You Look at Me>, which presents an exciting beat by combining pop and rock, a cheerful folk version with a sense of rhythm, <When Autumn Comes>, and <Flying Through the Deep Night> , <Sad Smile>, and <Goodbye>, where Lee Moon-se's falsetto stands out, there is not a single song to leave out. The title song <When Love Passes> was remade by many singers across generations and genders, including Jung Hoon-hee, Choi Seong-soo, Lee Soo-young, and IU, and was given value as a representative ballad masterpiece of the 1980s.

<Breakup Story>, a famous song in which the main characters are reversed
<Breakup Story>, sung with Go Eun-hee, a former member of the MBC College Song Festival, is a representative mixed duet song. At that time, Lee Moon-se became close with Ko Eun-hee and Lee Jeong-ran, who appeared on the MBC radio program “Starry Night” that he was hosting. Lee Moon-se, who was preparing to record his 4th album, suggested Lee Jeong-ran to do a duet of this song after the broadcast. However, there is a story in which Go Eun-hee, who is not under a record label due to her contract with Earth Records, became the main character. This song was played as background music in the love scene between Jeong-bong and Mi-ok in the cable tVN drama “Reply 1988,” giving a moving feeling.

A bestseller from the 80s with a mixture of various versions
As a bestseller representing the 80s, this album is a mixture of early versions with different jacket designs, reissues, and modified versions of the 45-time single. The initial jacket design had a dull atmosphere. As signs of a big hit appeared immediately after release, the production company immediately reinforced the musician information, changed the jacket design to create a unique atmosphere, and reissued it. It is an album decorated with a mosaic photo of Lee Moon-se's face on a familiar yellow background. Lee Moon-se's 4th album, which sold 2.85 million copies and won the 2nd Golden Disk Award following Cho Yong-pil's, set a milestone as the highest-selling Korean pop album until then. This was also a signal that the heyday of pop ballads began in earnest. Due to this album's Mechaton-level hit, Lee Moon-se was selected as one of MBC's Top 10 Singers in 1988 and rose to the top.

12-inch single to commemorate becoming a million-seller
King Records produced a small number of 12-inch single LPs to commemorate this album's million-seller status. This album, which boasts clearly superior sound quality thanks to its 45 rotation method, rather than the usual 33 and 1/3 rotation speeds for LPs, is currently quite valuable. The single jacket is similar to the cover photo of Jaeban, but Lee Moon-se's black hair has been changed to blue. Unlike the regular album, which has '45 RPM' and the two title songs written on the front of the jacket, all three songs included in the single, including 'Only the Sound of That Woman's Laughter', 'When You Look at Me', and 'Breakup Story', are written on it. The back of the single's jacket also has photos that are slightly different from those of the regular class, discolored through solarization, creating a unique atmosphere.
With the huge hit of this album, Lee Moon-se and Lee Young-hoon enjoyed their heyday as the golden combination of the time, guaranteeing box office success. Production company King Records also laid the foundation for becoming a major record label that owns the largest studio factory in Asia. 1987년 발매된 이문세 정규 4집은 대중가요의 부흥을 견인한 1980년대 최고의 명반 중 하나이다. 1986년 서울 아시안게임과 1988년 서울올림픽 이전이 팝송 시대였다면 그 이후는 대중가요 시대로 전환된 터닝 포인트였다. 국제적인 스포츠행사들을 성공적으로 마무리하면서 우리 문화에 대한 가치를 자각하기 시작했던 이 시기에 외국 팝송에 비견할 수준 높은 대중가요 명반과 명곡들이 봇물 터지듯 발표되었다. 당시 라디오를 장악했던 팝송 프로그램들도 대중가요의 거센 침공에 서서히 자리를 내주기 시작했다.

이영훈의 작품으로만 제작된 첫 음반
가수 이문세와 작곡가 이영훈 콤비가 빚어낸 팝 발라드는 80년대 한국대중음악의 판도를 뒤흔들었다. 밀리언셀러로 존재감을 알렸던 3집 발매 후 2년이 지난 1987년 3월 10일 이문세의 정규 4집은 큰 기대 속에 발매되었다. 명곡들의 향기가 그윽한 이 앨범은 작곡가 이영훈의 작품으로만 제작된 사실상 첫 음반이다. 기타리스트 김광석, 함춘호의 세션과 김명곤의 편곡은 앨범에 무게감을 더했다.
<사랑이 지나가면>과 <그女의 웃음소리뿐>은 세련된 어법과 섬세한 감성으로 채색된 명품 팝 발라드들이다. 김동석 오케스트라의 현악 연주로 구성한 <밤이 머무는 곳에>, 팝과 록의 접목으로 흥겨운 비트를 선사한 <그대 나를 보면>, 리듬감이 배어있는 경쾌한 포크 버전 <가을이 오면>, <깊은 밤을 날아서>, <슬픈 미소>, 그리고 이문세의 가성이 돋보이는 <굿바이> 등 어느 것 하나 뺄 곡이 없다. 타이틀곡 <사랑이 지나가면>은 정훈희, 최성수, 이수영, 아이유 등 세대와 성별을 초월한 많은 가수들이 리메이크하며 1980년대를 대표하는 발라드 명곡으로 존재가치를 부여받았다.

주인공이 뒤바뀐 명곡 <이별이야기>
MBC 대학가요제 출신 고은희와 함께 노래한 <이별이야기>는 혼성 듀엣의 대표적인 명곡이다. 당시 이문세는 자신이 진행하던 MBC 라디오 프로그램「별이 빛나는 밤에」에 출연한 고은희, 이정란과 친해졌다. 4집 녹음을 준비하던 이문세는 방송 이후 이정란에게 이 곡의 듀엣 취입을 제안했다. 하지만 지구레코드와 계약 관계로 인해 음반사 전속이 없는 고은희가 주인공이 된 사연이 있다. 이 노래는 케이블 tVN 드라마「응답하라 1988」에서 정봉과 미옥의 사랑을 담은 장면에서 원곡 비전이 배경음악으로 깔려 뭉클함을 안겨주었다.

다양한 버전이 혼재하는 80년대 베스트셀러
80년대를 대표하는 베스트셀러답게 이 음반은 재킷 디자인이 다른 초반과 재발매음반 그리고 45회전 싱글 변형 버전이 혼재한다. 초반 재킷의 디자인은 칙칙한 분위기였다. 발매 직후 빅히트의 조짐이 보이자 제작사는 즉시 뮤지션 정보를 보강하고 독특한 분위기로 재킷 디자인을 변경해 재발매했다. 우리에게 익숙한 노란색 바탕에 이문세의 모자이크 얼굴 사진으로 장식된 음반이다. 285만장이 팔려나가며 조용필에 이어 제 2회 골든디스크상을 수상한 이문세 4집은 그때까지 국내 대중가요 음반 최다 판매 기록의 금자탑을 세웠다. 이는 팝 발라드 전성시대의 본격 개막을 의미하는 시그널이기도 했다. 이 음반의 메카톤급 히트로 이문세는 1988년 MBC 10대 가수로 선정되며 최정상에 올랐다.

밀리언셀러 등극 기념 12인치 싱글
킹레코드는 이 앨범의 밀리언셀러 등극을 기념하는 의미로 12인치 싱글 LP를 소량 제작했다. LP의 일반적인 회전수인 33과 1/3이 아닌 45회전 방식을 택해 확연하게 뛰어난 음질이 매력적인 이 음반은 현재 상당히 귀한 몸값을 자랑한다. 싱글 재킷은 재반 커버사진과 비슷하지만 이문세의 검정 머리카락이 파란색으로 변형되어 있다. 재킷 앞면에 '45 RPM'과 타이틀 2곡을 명기한 정규앨범과는 달리 싱글에는 '그女의 웃음소리뿐', '그대 나를 보면', '이별이야기' 등 수록된 3곡이 모두 명기되어 있다. 싱글의 재킷 뒷면도 정규반과는 약간 다른 사진을 솔라리제이션으로 변색 처리해 특이한 분위기를 연출한다.
