Lee Moon-sae's fifth studio album (1988), selected as one of the 100 Greatest Albums of Korean Popular Music, is the final installment of the "Lee Moon-sae Trilogy," which began with his third album (1985) and marked a major hit for the duo, who took the pop music world by storm. This album marked a musical and commercial zenith for the duo, who are considered the golden duo of the 1980s. Lee Young-sae's music is characterized by captivating, elegant love songs with poetic lyrics and captivating melodies. These songs shine even brighter through Lee Moon-sae's vocals, who moved listeners with his vocal style that straddled lyricism and passion. It is a joyful encounter, where Lee Young-sae's beautiful lyrics and melodies harmoniously blend with Lee Moon-sae's unique vocal style.
This album, overflowing with beautiful ballad masterpieces that represent the era, is a feast for the eyes of Korean pop ballads. Not only are there hits that were loved simultaneously like "Poem for Poetry," "Gwanghwamun Love Song," and "Red Sunset," but there are also lesser-known hits like "Fog Flower Memories," "My Old Girl," "This Night," "Portrait of Memory," "The Beginning of the End," and "Love is Like a Ray of Sunshine," all of which are perfect for the chilly autumn weather, when a whirlwind of emotions of longing and memories swirls around. The Lee Moon-sae-Lee Young-hoon duo, who led the golden age of ballads by presenting sophisticated pop ballads, brought about a major shift in the public perception of popular music, which had until then been overshadowed by pop songs.

Seoul's representative song, "Gwanghwamun Love Song"
This album is filled with countless timeless masterpieces that are still recalled and talked about today. Starting with "Poetry for Poetry," which opens the album with a warm, emotional string instrument, songs like "Gwanghwamun Love Song," "Standing Under the Shade of Street Trees," and "Red Sunset" are all masterpieces from the 1980s that showcase the artistic sensibility of composer Lee Young-hoon at its peak. The lyrics of "Poetry for Poetry," written for a poor girl, are a song that Lee Young-hoon himself expressed musical satisfaction with. "Standing Under the Shade of Street Trees," before he actively engaged with the public, was composed one autumn day in 1983 in his studio in Hyehwa-dong, Seoul, and then inspired by a morning stroll down a tree-lined street.
Among them, "Gwanghwamun Love Song," which has become engraved as a local song representing Seoul and Gwanghwamun, is a masterpiece that stands alongside "Old Love" among the numerous hits by the Lee Moon-sae-Lee Young-hoon duo. This song resonated with the public by telling a beautiful and heartbreaking love story set against the backdrop of the quaint Jeongdong Church and Deoksugung Stone Wall Road, where the composer Lee Young-hoon's memories fill the streets. "Gwanghwamun Love Song" was so beloved that it was selected as a Top 10 non-trot song on MBC Radio's "20 Popular Songs of the Week" in 1989. In 2008, just one year after Lee Young-hoon passed away from colon cancer, "Gwanghwamun Love Song" was erected on Jeongdong-gil next to Deoksugung Stone Wall Road as Seoul's sixth song monument. The monument, featuring an analog microphone and Lee Young-hoon's bright smile, is a striking sculptural beauty that draws attention. The music industry's shift in perception of popular music albums
This album was a massive hit, with multiple songs simultaneously loved. Following the success of his previous releases, the pre-orders for his fifth full-length album reached hundreds of thousands. The production company, brimming with confidence in Lee Moon-sae's next work, made a momentous decision that shook up the pop music market. At the time, the price of a pop song LP was 3,300 won. King Records abruptly raised the price of Lee Moon-sae's fifth full-length album to 4,000 won, putting it on par with pop song albums, which were previously more expensive than K-Pop albums. The sudden price increase sparked a nationwide boycott of the album.
The negative market sentiment surrounding price increases created a sense of concern. However, Lee Moon-sae's fifth album, as if to defy the odds, sold like hotcakes. Ultimately, the album sold 2.58 million copies, rivaling its predecessor, which had set a record for the best-selling pop album. This achievement demonstrated the public's preference for the content and quality of the music contained within the album over its price. This album sparked a major shift in the music industry's perception of pop albums, which had been undervalued and priced lower than foreign pop albums.

It also provided a revolutionary turning point in the broadcasting industry.
The album's continued success propelled Lee Moon-sae to the top, winning the Golden Disk Award for three consecutive years, starting in 1986, and the MBC Top 10 Singer Award for two consecutive years, in 1988 and 1989. Composer Lee Young-hoon was also recognized as a top hit composer, sought after by every singer of the time. The high-quality pop ballads they presented also brought about a seismic shift in radio music programming at the time. The era of long-running pop song programs ended, leading to the massive influx of music programs. In this respect, the album has become a classic, providing the starting point for a revolutionary shift in the perception of popular music in the domestic music industry and broadcasting industry.

The retro culture craze that began in the 2000s brought about a fervent trend in the pop music industry, with a surge in remakes of classic hits from the past. 한국대중음악 100대 명반에 선정되었던 이문세의 정규 5집(1988년)은 3집(1985년)부터 시작된 작곡가 이영훈과 콤비를 이뤄 대중음악계를 강타했던 '이문세 명반 3부작'의 완결판이다. 80년대를 대표하는 황금콤비로 평가받는 두 사람에게 이 앨범은 음악적으로나 흥행적으로나 정점을 찍었다. 이영훈의 음악은 시적인 가사와 탁월한 멜로디가 매혹적인 격조 깊은 사랑 노래들이 주를 이룬다. 그가 만든 노래들은 서정과 격정을 넘나드는 창법으로 듣는 이의 마음을 움직인 이문세의 입을 통해 더욱 빛났다. 이영훈의 아름다운 가사와 멜로디가 이문세의 창법이 지닌 장점과 잘 어우러진 행복한 만남이라 할 수 있다.

가격인상에 대한 시장의 부정적인 움직임에 우려스런 분위기가 조성되었다. 하지만 이문세 5집은 그 같은 상황을 비웃듯이 오히려 날개 돋친 듯 팔려 나가는 반전을 이뤄냈다. 결국 이 앨범은 대중가요 음반 최다 판매기록을 세웠던 전작에 버금가는 258만 장의 판매고를 기록했다. 이는 음반 가격보다 앨범에 담긴 음악의 내용과 질을 중시하는 대중의 힘이었다. 이 음반을 계기로, 외국 팝송 음반에 비해 저평가되어 판매가격이 낮게 책정되었던 대중가요 음반에 대한 음반 산업계 전반에 대대적인 인식 전환으로 이어졌다.

방송계에도 혁명적인 전환점을 제공
