LesliE's first EP, [TRANSPONDER], could be said to have started in December 23.
This is a charming EP that shows LesliE's nerd side, who developed an interest in aviation/piloting while reading a book about the profession of pilot. As expected of LesliE, who lives by the value of "Imagination is everything," he creates music with a variety of perspectives, freely using his imagination on the topic of TRANSPONDER.

The song title is based on the actual TRANSPONDER squawk codes used, from 1200 for clock flight, to 7600 for communication failure, and 7700 for emergency declaration. The first song of the EP, 0912, is not an actual squawk code, but it is also the birthday of LesliE's favorite artist, LesliE's favorite Leslie Cheung, and the day before LesliE's birthday. By placing this song with a gentle piano sound as the first track, it is a tribute song expressing respect and affection for LesliE Cheung, and a pledge to become a cool person like him as someone who inherited his name.

1. 0912 (blackout)

"0912 (아비정전)" is the title of a movie that Leslie Cheung, who is no longer available, starred in, but is forever in my heart as the No. 1 actor and singer. The reason why my English name is LesliE is because Leslie Cheung's English name is Leslie, so I thought I inherited that, and that's why I made it myself. Thinking that I inherited his name, I naturally wanted to be a better person and someone who has a positive influence.

This is a song that contains my feelings. I can't tell Leslie Cheung, but I hope that one day, this song will be told to people around him who remember him, like Director Wong Kar-wai or Actor Tony Leung.


2. 1200 (clock flight)

This song is about breaking away from a bad relationship from the past that I couldn't break away from.
In fact, '1200' is one of the SQUAWK CODES transmitted from TRANSPONDER, and its meaning is 'visual flight'. Visual flight means that the pilot flies while observing the weather conditions and terrain outside with his/her eyes, not the instruments inside the aircraft.

I tried to connect with my past through this metaphor.
When I was a student, when I had no clear values and was only passionate about music, I met a music teacher. Thinking back now, I think I was very influenced by his words. At the time, I believed that I wouldn't be able to do music if I didn't work with him, but now that I look back, I think, "Wow, you're saying that to a kid?"

When flying a watch flight, the pilot is responsible for avoiding obstacles and maintaining a safe distance from other aircraft. I interpreted that to fit my situation. At that time, being swayed by his words was like looking at the instruments in an airplane, but after that, I read books by great people, autobiographies and essays of people I like, and I thought that 'watch flight', which is solving problems with my eyes, was the process of going my own way.

In fact, both instrument and visual flight are important in flight. You can never fly properly with just one.

But through this song, I want to tell myself, "I am where I am today because I let go of my relationship with that person."


3. 7600 (communication cut off)

The title track of this EP, '7600 (communication cut off)', tells the story of a long-distance couple in Australia. There's a common saying, 'When your bodies are far apart, your hearts also grow apart'. I thought that saying would never apply to us, but in the end, we ended up ending up together for the same reasons as other couples. It's a song that depicts the complicated feelings that appear here and there when you feel that at first, it was all about longing and affection, but gradually those feelings disappear and you feel distant. In the end, it's a song that contains the process of accepting that we were just like everyone else, which was painful, but at the same time, that it was inevitable.


4. 7700 (Emergency Declaration)

This song is about myself when I tried to give up on music in the past.
As I said in the song introduction of '1200 (Clock Flight)', I thought I couldn't do music without the person I was with at the time. I thought that person knew my strengths better, and it felt like it was natural to follow what he said.

After I stopped making music with him, I lost confidence in my own music. I became afraid of music and wanted to run away from it. And then, what I became close to was books. I lived with him. I remember that I became particularly interested in art, so I bought everything from art education books to Basquiat art books.

But one day, while looking at a painting, this thought suddenly occurred to me.
"When I look at this picture, this kind of music comes to mind? These kinds of lyrics come to mind?" I used to run away from music because I was afraid of it, but I ended up remembering music again through art.

"Just as I was comforted by paintings when I was having a hard time, I thought, 'Couldn't this song be a comfort to people who are in the same situation as I was in the past?' This song was created through those experiences.

LesliE의 첫 EP인 [TRANSPONDER]는 어쩌면 23년 12월부터 시작되었다고 할 수 있다.
우연히 파일럿이라는 직업에 관련된 책을 읽다 항공/조종 분야 흥미를 느끼게 된 LesliE의 덕후력이 나타나는 매력적인 EP이다. "Imagination is everything"이라는 가치관을 가지고 살아가는 LesliE답게 TRANSPONDER라는 주제를 가지고 상상력을 마음껏 펼치며 다양한 시야로 음악을 만들어낸다.

곡의 제목은 시계비행을 뜻하는 1200부터 통신 두절을 뜻하는 7600, 비상선언을 뜻하는 7700으로 실제로 사용되는 TRANSPONDER의 squawk code를 사용했다. EP의 첫 곡이기도 한 0912는 실제 사용되는 squawk code는 아니지만 LesliE가 가장 사랑하는 아티스트인 장국영의 생일이자 LesliE의 생일 하루 전이기도 하다. 잔잔한 피아노 소리가 메인인 이 곡을 처음 트랙에 배치함으로써 장국영에 대한 존경심과 애정, 그의 이름을 물려받은 사람으로서 그와 같이 멋있는 사람이 되겠다고 다짐하는 헌정곡이다.

곡에 담긴 이야기나 의미를 제 3자가 글로 길게 나열하는 것보다는 LesliE가 직접 쓴 각 곡에 대한 소개를 읽어본 후, LesliE가 직접 쓴 가사를 보며 곡을 들어본다면 LesliE가 어떤 모습으로 자기를 표현하려고 했는지 온전히 느껴볼 수 있을 것이다.

1. 0912(아비정전)

"0912(아비정전)"은 이제는 더 이상 만날 수 없지만, 영원히 제 마음속에 NO.1 배우, 가수이신 장국영님이 출연하셨던 영화 제목이에요. 제 영어 이름이 LesliE인 이유도 장국영 님의 영어 이름이 Leslie라 그걸 제가 물려받았다는 생각으로 제 스스로 지은 거거든요. 그분의 이름을 물려받았다고 생각하니까 더 좋은 사람이 되고 싶고, 좋은 영향력을 끼치는 사람이 되고 싶다는 생각이 자연스럽게 들었어요.

그런 제 마음을 담은 곡이에요. 장국영님께 전해드릴 수 없지만, 언젠가 그를 기억하는 그 주변 분들 왕가위 감독님 혹은 양조위 배우님께 이 노래가 전해질 날이 왔으면 좋겠어요.


2. 1200(시계비행)

이 곡은 제가 끊지 못했던 과거의 악연을 끊어내는 이야기예요.
사실, '1200'은 TRANSPONDER에서 전송되는 SQUAWK CODE 중 하나인데, 그 의미가 '시계비행'이죠. 시계비행이라는 건, 비행 중에 조종사가 항공기 내부의 계기가 아닌, 외부의 기상 상태와 육안으로 지형을 보면서 비행하는 방식이에요.

이 비유를 통해 제 과거와 연결 지으려 했어요.
학창 시절, 제가 가치관이 확실히 없고 음악에 대한 열정만 가득했던 때, 한 음악 선생님을 만났었는데 지금 생각해 보면 그분의 말에 많이 휘둘렸던 것 같아요. 그때는 그분과 함께하지 않으면 음악을 할 수 없을 거라고 믿었지만, 지금 돌아보면 "와, 어린애한테 그런 말을 한다고?"라고 생각이 들 정도니까요.

시계비행을 할 때에는 조종사에게 비행 중 장애물 회피 및 주변 항공기와의 안전거리 유지에 대한 책임이 있어요. 저는 그걸 제 상황에 맞게 해석했어요. 그때 그분의 말에 휘둘리던 상태가 마치 비행기 안에서 계기만 보는 것과 같았다면, 그 후, 위인들의 책을 읽고 제가 좋아하는 사람들의 자서전, 에세이를 읽으며 키웠던 생각들과 눈으로 문제를 해결하는 '시계비행'은 내 길을 가는 과정이라고 생각했죠.

사실, 비행에서는 계기비행과 시계비행 모두 중요해요. 한쪽만으로는 절대 제대로 비행할 수 없거든요.

하지만 이 곡을 통해서는 제가 제 스스로에게 말해주고 싶은 거예요. "그 사람과의 인연을 놓았기에 지금의 내가 있을 수 있었다고."


3. 7600(통신두절)

이번 EP의 타이틀곡인 '7600(통신두절)'은 호주에 있는 장거리 커플의 이야기를 담고 있어요. '몸이 멀어지면 마음도 멀어진다'는 흔한 말이 있잖아요. 그 말이 우리에게는 절대 해당되지 않을 거라고 생각했지만, 결국 우리도 다른 커플들과 똑같은 이유로 끝이 나버렸다 그런 이야기예요. 처음엔 그리움과 애틋함이 전부였지만, 점점 그 감정들이 사라지고 멀어져 가는 걸 느꼈을 때의 그 복잡한 마음들이 중간중간에 나타나는 그린 곡이에요. 결국 우리도 다른 사람들과 똑같았다는 사실이 너무 아프기도 했고, 동시에 그게 어쩔 수 없는 일이었다는 걸 받아들이는 과정을 담은 곡이에요.


4. 7700(비상선언)

이 곡은 과거에 음악을 포기하려고 했던 제 자신에 대한 이야기예요.
'1200(시계비행)' 곡 소개에서도 말했듯, 그때 함께한 사람과 함께하지 않으면 음악을 할 수 없다고 생각했었어요. 그 분이 제 장점을 더 잘 알고 있다고 생각했고, 그 분의 말에 따라가는 게 마치 당연한 것처럼 느껴졌죠.

그 분과 같이 음악을 같이 하지 않게 된 후, 제 자신의 음악에 대한 자신감이 없어지게 되더라고요. 음악이 무서워지고 그 곳에서 도망치고 싶었어요. 그리고 그때 친해진 게 바로 책이에요. 옆에 끼고 살았거든요. 특히 미술 분야에 관심이 생겨서 미술 교양책부터 바스키아 화집까지 구매했었던 기억이 나요.

그런데 어느 날, 그림을 보면서 문득 이런 생각이 드는 거예요.
"이 그림을 보니까 이런 음악이 떠오르네? 이런 가사 구절도 떠오르는데?" 음악이 두려워서 도망쳤던 내가 결국 미술을 통해 다시 음악을 떠올리고 있더라고요

"내가 힘들 때 그림들을 통해 위로를 받았던 것처럼, 과거의 나와 같은 상황에 처한 사람들에게 이 곡 그런 위로가 될 수 있지 않을까?"라는 생각이 들었죠. 이 곡은 그 경험들을 통해 만든 곡이에요.
