Malo, Korea's premier jazz vocalist, will release his first live album, "MALO LIVE AT MUDDY," on vinyl. Released on CD and digital in July, the album received rave reviews from both the press and critics. The album, a collaboration between Hwang Byung-jun and Yoon Jeong-oh, the sonic dream team, is a must-listen for audiophiles. Boasting a level of perfection rarely seen in live albums, it has even been hailed as "the new standard for Korean live album sound."

Two-time Grammy Award winner Hwang Byung-jun handled the recording and mastering, while Yoon Jeong-oh, who has mixed numerous albums including "Jeong Mi-jo," "Lee Byung-woo," "Poet and Village Chief," and "Lucid Fall," handled on-site sound direction and album mixing. This unprecedented collaboration between two engineers, from live recording to post-production, is unprecedented. Engineer Hwang Byung-jun specifically performed the analog mastering for the LP, resulting in a sound far richer than that of a CD.

The LP consists of a color double disc, weighing 180g, and is produced to the highest standards, including a gatefold tip-on sleeve (opening hardcover) jacket and a four-page color insert. All processes, including cutting, pressing, and printing, were performed in the Czech Republic.

The album features a live performance at the Gunsan jazz club "MUDDY" in May 2024. Malo has long released original albums and jazz-inspired versions of popular songs. However, these studio albums simply couldn't capture the full scope of Malo's musical energy. This live album overflows with Malo's unbridled, raw energy. Except for the encore, the album's tracks are all jazz standards, songs Malo has honed over time on club stages. The album covers a wide range of genres, including swing, Latin, blues, and ballads. There are also three scat songs without lyrics, offering a unique interpretation of Malo's work. The encore track, "Cherry Blossoms Fall," is a signature original composition, and was included for symbolic purposes.

The recording session took place at Club Muddy, a small space with virtually no distinction between the stage and the audience. It's an ideal setting for jazz musicians who thrive on improvisation through instantaneous interaction with the audience. However, the confined space often resulted in significant interference, making proper recording difficult. Engineers Hwang Byung-jun and Yoon Jeong-oh demonstrated remarkable problem-solving skills on-site and demonstrated a dedicated dedication to post-production. The result was a stunning sound that rivals any foreign audio masterpiece.

This album features Malo and his bandmates for over a decade: Lee Myung-geon (piano), Hwang Yi-hyeon (guitar), Jeong Yeong-jun (bass), and Lee Do-heon (drums). Their musical souls are so connected that they can read each other perfectly just by looking at each other on stage. All four are renowned figures representing Korean jazz, and they are the stars of this album. Extraordinary performances, impossible to achieve in a studio recording, sparkle throughout the album. These are qualities only possible in the intense heat of a live performance.
The protagonist of this album is time. It captures a one-time, unrepeatable event, thrown into the haphazard moments of life. Marlowe and the band transformed that moment into a gift, delivering a musical dialogue of unparalleled richness. The audience responded enthusiastically, not missing a single breath, and the live performance was completed together. Therefore, this album belongs not only to the musicians but also to the Gunsan audience. There was even an incident during the performance where a piano string snapped. The sound was captured vividly in the middle of the song "A time to love, a time to cry (Florzinha)."
In 1996, Malo studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Jazz in the United States. Upon returning to Korea, she made a musical impact with her dazzling scat performances on club stages. Music industry insiders were astonished, claiming that a Korean jazz vocalist capable of mastering scat singing had finally arrived. She earned the nicknames "Queen of Scat" and "Korea's Ella Fitzgerald." Since her debut, Malo has consistently been a top jazz vocalist, but she has never rested on her laurels, constantly refining her craft. These years have brought her live performances to a new level. She possesses all the qualities necessary for a live performance: musical prowess, mature technique, remarkable stage presence, perfect control of her body, and boundless passion for life. For Malo, now is undoubtedly her best moment. This album is a personal record of Malo's peak, and also a shining example of how far Korean jazz has come.

한국 최고의 재즈 보컬리스트 말로의 첫 라이브 앨범 'MALO LIVE AT MUDDY'가 LP로 출시된다. 지난 7월 CD와 음원으로 발표된 이 앨범은 여러 언론과 평단으로부터 격찬을 받았다. 이번 앨범은 '음향 드림팀'이라 할 수 있는 황병준과 윤정오의 협업으로 완성된, 오디오 매니아라면 무조건 들어야 할 필청반이다. 라이브 앨범으로는 보기 드물게 높은 완성도를 자랑해 “한국 라이브 앨범 사운드의 새 기준”이라는 펑가까지 받았다.

그래미상 2회 수상에 빛나는 황병준이 녹음과 마스터링을, 정미조 이병우 시인과촌장 루시드폴 등 여러 명반의 믹싱 작업을 한 윤정오가 현장 사운드 디렉팅과 앨범 믹싱을 맡았다. 라이브 현장 녹음부터 후반 작업까지 전 과정을 두 엔지니어가 협업한 것은 전례 없다. 특히 LP 제작을 위해 황병준 엔지니어가 특별히 아날로그 마스터링을 해, CD보다 훨씬 풍부한 사운드를 느낄 수 있다.

LP는 컬러 더블 디스크로 구성됐으며, 180g 중량반에 게이트 폴드 팁온 슬리브(펼침 양장) 자켓과 4페이지 컬러 인서트 등 최고급 사양으로 제작했다. 커팅, 프레싱, 인쇄 등 전 공정을 체코에서 진행했다.

앨범은 2024년 5월 군산 재즈클럽 '머디(MUDDY)'에서 있었던 공연 실황을 담았다. 말로는 오랫동안 창작 앨범과 가요를 재즈화한 작품들을 발표해왔다. 하지만 이 스튜디오 앨범들로는 말로의 음악적 에너지를 오롯이 담기에 부족했다. 이번 라이브 앨범에는 말로의 거침없는, 날 것 그대로의 에너지가 넘친다. 앨범 수록곡은 앵콜을 제외하면 모두 재즈 스탠더드다. 말로가 오랫동안 클럽 무대에서 벼리고 벼린 노래들이다. 스윙, 라틴, 블루스, 발라드 등 장르가 다양하다. 가사 없는 스캣곡도 3곡이 있다. 말로만의 독창적 해석을 만날 수 있다. 앵콜곡 '벚꽃 지다'는 말로를 대표하는 창작곡이라 상징적으로 넣었다.

녹음을 진행한 클럽 '머디'는 무대와 객석의 구분이 거의 없는 작은 공간이다. 관객과 순간적 교감을 통해 즉흥을 완성하는 재즈 뮤지션들에겐 가장 이상적인 곳이다. 하지만 좁은 만큼 소리 간섭이 많아 녹음을 제대로 하기엔 난점이 많았다. 황병준, 윤정오 두 엔지니어는 현장에서 놀라운 문제 해결 능력을 보여줬으며, 후반 작업에도 집념을 보였다. 그 결과 외국의 어느 오디오 명반에 견주어도 손색없는 멋진 사운드가 탄생했다.

이번 앨범엔 말로와 10년 이상 밴드 멤버로 호흡을 맞춰온 이명건(피아노) 황이현(기타) 정영준(베이스) 이도헌(드럼)이 함께 했다. 이들은 이제 무대에서 눈빛만 봐도 서로를 완벽하게 읽어낼 만큼 음악적 영혼이 연결되어 있다. 4명 모두 한국 재즈를 대표하는 실력자들이며, 이들 역시 앨범의 주인공이다. 스튜디오 녹음에서는 절대 만들어 낼 수 없는 비범한 연주들이 앨범 곳곳에 번뜩인다. 라이브 현장의 어떤 열기 안에서만 가능한 것들이다.
