언어는 정보 공유에만 그 가치가 있지 않다. 언어는 소통과 공감 그리고 시대상이 고스란히
묻어 있다. 음악은… 특히 대중음악은 기존 언어의 체계를 넘어선 소통, 공감, 시대상 그리고 그에
더해 감동이라는 코드까지 내제되어 있다. 그래서 음악은 언어를 뛰어넘는 '공통언어'인 것이다.
'싱어송라이터 남동현'의 데뷔 때부터 그를 쭉 지켜보았던 필자는 그의 음악에서 그 만의 언어를
엿본다. 처음엔 다소 거칠고 정리되지 않았던 '남동현의 언어'는 시간의 흐름에 따라 너무나도
분명한 색채를 가지기 시작했다. 때론 어릴 적 일기장을 꺼내어 보는 아련함으로 때로는 현실의
벽을 넘어 가려 발버둥 치는 절실함으로 또 어느 때는 꿈을 잃지 않으려는 간절함으로 그의
언어는 채색되어 간다. 아마도 그의 언어의 뿌리에는 지금 현재를 살아가는 평범한 젊은이로서
느끼는 상실이 자연스레 깔려 있는 듯하다.

감성을 가슴에 심은 전략가
'남동현'의 음악에는 색깔이 있다. 편곡 적인 측면에서는 세계적인 Pop시장의 Trend(유행)를
놓치지 않는 편이다. 하지만 그런 음악 위에 그려지는 선율은 한국인만이 가지고 있는 감성이
자리잡고 있다. 그저 통기타 하나로도 그 음악을 고스란히 전달할 수 있는 한국적' Folk'음악의
요소가 그의 독특한 음악 세계를 구축하고 있다. 그런 면에서 '남동현'은 'Contrast(대조)'의 기술
을 너무나 잘 활용하는 '전략가'인지도 모르겠다. 그의 음악을 듣고 있자면 '신이 나는데 아픈…',
'슬픈데 희망적인…' 과 같이 감정을 뒤섞는 감성을 느낄 때가 많다. Trend(유행)와 본질적인
전통성을 동시에 가지고 있는 음악! 그것이 '남동현 표' 언어인 듯하다.


( )로 정의된 첫 번째 EP
'남동현'의 첫 번째 EP의 제목은 '( )' 이다. 본 작의 첫 번째 트랙 역시 '( )'라는 제목을 가지고
있다. 이 연주 곡은 '남동현'의 공연을 보았던 분들에게는 많이 익숙한 음악일 것이다.
그의 공연 'Intro'로 항상 연주되는 이 곡은 마치 첫 출항을 앞두고 비장하고도 들떠 있는 기분을
고스란히 표현한 듯한 트랙이다. 두 번째 넘버인 'Blind'는 본 앨범의 타이틀곡이다. New wave를
연상시키는 Synth 사운드가 특징적인 이 음악은 Minor한 감성의 보컬 멜로디 탑라인이 '남동현'
특유의 '대조의 미학'을 다시 한번 구현한다. 또 Rapper '오담률'이 '피쳐링'으로 참가한 '싱잉 랩'
파트는 곡의 완성도를 높이는 알찬 구성을 만들어 냈다. 중요한 무언가를 잃어버려 아무것도 보
이지 않는 상실감, 눈먼 자들의 도시로 은유 된 현실 세계의 암담함. 그래도 '다시 한번 불을 지
필 거라'는 희망을 담은 메시지! 본 앨범에서 말하고 싶었던 건 바로 이 '희망'이 아닐까! 싶다.
세번째 트랙인 '대저택'은 음악적으로는 PB R&B와 Hip Hop의 요소가 적절히 조화를 이루는
'남동현 식' Pop음악이다. 곡의 도입부는 따라 부르기 쉬울 정도로 편하지만 왠지 슬프기도 하다.
하지만 구체적이고 조금은 '유머러스'한 가사들이 이 슬픔을 왠지 상쇄시켜주는 것 같다.
“Trendy하지만 자신의 나이보다 “Sensible”한 작품이 바로 '대저택'이다.
네번째 곡인 'Driver's License'는 '꿈과 이상에 도달하기 위해 달리고 또 달리는 사람들 속에
유독 특출 나게 운전권을 부여 받은 이들을 그려냈다. 이 곡은 EDM과 그의 모토가 된 Eurodance
음악의 느낌이 전반적인 편곡의 뼈대를 이루고 있지만, 그의 멜로디 Top Line은 Folk와 Soul이 절
묘하게 믹스된 '남동현의 언어'로 이루어져 있다. 본 작은 여러 장르의 음악들이 적절히 혼합된
이른바 'Melting Pot'이라는 장르명에 가장 적합한 넘버라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 다섯 번째 넘버
'공전'은 '남동현'의 본질적인 감성이 가장 도드라진 노래라고 할 수 있다. “수놓은 별들 사이 네가
있을까? 다시금 손끝으로 가리켜보네. 널 또 본 것만 같아 저 하늘 별들 로부터 그 주위를 공전하며
떠나질 못해 저 하늘 별이 되었다.”라는 시적인 가사가 나타내 듯 그의 감성이 가장 잘 묻어 난 곡
이라고 볼 수 있으며, 곡의 전반적인 흐름과 대조되는 리드 사운드가 특징적인 넘버이다.
여섯 번째 트랙 '갈고리 선장'은 다음 곡인 '해적이 되고 싶었던 소년'의 Teaser형식의 연주 곡이다.
마치 꿈 속에서 '해적'이 된 소년이 망망대해에 떠 있는 것이 상상되는 곡으로 마지막 트랙인
'해적이 되고 싶었던 소년'에 대한 기대치를 한껏 올려 놓는 역할을 한다. '남동현'의 어릴 적 꿈이
고스란히 담긴 본 앨범의 마지막 트랙은 그의 공연 막바지에 항상 연주되는 노래이다.
이 곡을 연주할 때 그의 모습은 그냥 어릴 적 '해적'을 꿈꾸던 바로 그 모습이다. 공연장 가장 높은
곳으로 올라가 관객을 향해 '해적이 되고 싶었어!'라고 외치는 모습이 바로 그가 현실 세계에 얘기
하고 싶은 '메시지'일 것이다.


한 쪽 문이 닫히면 다른 쪽 문이 열린다.
첫 번째 EP의 '( )'의 발매를 통해 '남동현'은 무엇을 느끼고 생각하고 있을까? 아마도 비어 있는
이 괄호를 채워 넣기 위해 다시 한번 신발 끝을 힘껏 잡아당기고 있을지도 모르겠다. 괄호 안에
아직까지 아무것도 넣어두지 못했다고 하더라도 그건 큰 문제가 아니다. 그 괄호는 언제든지 채
워 넣으면 그만인 것이다. 다만 소통하고자 공감하고자 노력하고 그 결과가 무엇이던 음악이라는
언어로 감동을 나누고자 노력하는 아티스트에게 한 명의 선배로서 이 말을 꼭 전하고 싶다.
“한 쪽 문이 닫히면 다른 쪽 문이 열린다.”
많은 시간이 지나간 어느 날, 다시 '남동현'의 음악을 듣는다면 지금처럼 자신의 언어를 당당히
