The first image that came to my mind while listening to Naul's single 'Word' was waves rolling over a lake. It was because of the free groove that goes up and down the surface of the water riding the cool breeze, and the elegant rhythm that stimulates the impulse.

'Word' is the second single from Naul's “Soul Pop City” project. It features a sweet love story that young people can relate to, a refreshing sound suitable for summer nights, and a mellow groove that can be enjoyed comfortably. It is different from the first “Soul Pop City” released last January, which was somewhat difficult for the public.

The lyrics of the song are full of love. It contains the excitement of a man and a woman flirting on a clear summer night when the stars are pouring. The fluttering emotions of men and women are amplified on the so-called 'Mellow Groove'. The electric piano and the bass line are connected in a dramatic way, as if a man and a woman are shyly conversing.

The sensuous rhythm development that exudes splendor in calmness is trendy rather than retro, even though it is a soul mellow groove style from the 70s and 80s. The modern synth sound that adds a sense of refreshment and the warm sound of the drum machine 'LinnDrum' flow harmoniously without a sense of heterogeneity, enhancing the completeness of the song.

The name Ted Jensen written in the credits also stands out. Ted Jensen, who has led the famous recording company Sterling Sound, participated in mastering. He has participated in numerous albums such as "Hotel California" by the Eagles, "American Idiot" by Green Day, and "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones.

물 위로 바람이 지나가면 물결이 부드럽게 움직인다. 넓은 호숫가에 잔잔한 물결이 넘실거리면 마음도 덩달아 움직이기 시작한다. 나얼의 싱글 'Word'를 들으며 처음 떠오른 심상은 호수 위를 넘실거리는 물결이었다. 시원한 바람을 타고 수면을 오르내리는 자유로운 그루브, 그리고 충동을 자극하는 유려한 리듬 때문이었다.

'Word'는 나얼의 “Soul Pop City” 프로젝트 두 번째 싱글이다. 젊은 층이 공감할 수 있는 달콤한 사랑 이야기, 여름밤에 어울리는 청량감 있는 사운드, 편안하게 즐길 수 있는 멜로우 그루브가 특징. 지난 1월 발매한 첫 번째 “Soul Pop City”가 대중들에게 다소 어렵게 느껴졌던 것과 차별된다.

곡의 가사에는 사랑이 가득하다. 별이 쏟아지는 청명한 여름밤, 썸을 타는 남녀의 설레는 감정을 담았다. 남녀의 설레는 감정은 이른바 '멜로우 그루브(Mellow Groove)' 위에서 증폭된다. 일렉트릭 피아노와 베이스라인이 남녀가 수줍게 대화를 주고받듯 드라마틱하게 연결되며, 특히 돋보이는 베이스라인은 담백한 기타 연주와 호흡하며 곡에 생명력을 불어넣는다.

크레딧에 적힌 테드 젠센(Ted Jensen)이라는 이름도 눈에 띈다. 레코딩 명가 스털링 사운드(Sterling Sound)를 이끌어 온 테드 젠센이 마스터링에 참여했다. 이글스의 “Hotel California”, 그린 데이의 “American Idiot”, 노라 존스의 “Come Away With Me” 등 수많은 명반에 참여한 거장이다.
