He was a musician who firmly adhered to the basics that a ballad singer should have, such as the resonance of his unique low-pitched sound and excellent lyrics delivery. There is one more. Whether it be a singer or a performer, I am convinced that the most important thing for him is his 'personality'. Park Jae-jung's music, to say the least, felt a world of his own that was different from the ballad singers of the past. This is the biggest reason why I started to constantly find and listen to his music.

From the first song 'Let's Say Goodbye', where the graceful chord voicing is excellent, his character stands out. At first, I expected this song to be written as a man's earnest reflection. It wasn't. As Park Jae-jung wrote himself, this song is probably a mean song. Isn't it? We are all slaves to the 'desire to be good'. This is the case when the other person wants to declare the breakup first at the moment when the breakup is imminent. I really like this reversal of perspective. For example, he is a ballad singer who is not afraid to be charmingly twisted at the crucial moment.

Of course, he didn't forget his true nature. In the following song 'Alone', we can confirm that he is a heavenly ballad singer. He sings of the inevitable loneliness in this song. However, he does not judge or criticize this life that has given him loneliness. They choose to record the truth of their lives with a silent attitude. A balladeer (ballader is a wrong expression) is a person who only sings love songs, you must have seen them around. In fact, ballad is a word that means slow and lyrical song. There are only a lot of songs 'mainly' about love between lovers, but there is no such thing as a rule that says love must be dealt with. But if you think about it again, yes. Isn't love for family love?

The album ends with 'When Sadness Rules Me'. As I wrote in <Cine 21> in the past, he still hovers around the rotating sadness in this type of song. The real sadness that comes only after all the dramas are over is sung over the guitar playing as if whispering. Indeed, it is. Sometimes a whisper can linger longer than an eloquence.

The keynote of the song is located in 'Simple'. No, in fact, the entire album is like that. In this debut work, Park Jae-jung sings while being wary of excesses. Perhaps he put a lot of effort into arranging. You must have experienced with your whole body the truth that subtraction is much more difficult than addition when making music. It is the same reason that if it is a valuable problem, it will never be solved at the level initially conceived. Nineteen-year-old Florida was like that. There was no way to confide in my depression because I did not communicate with my late family. I dreamed of being in my 20s, full of expectations that I would go back and be happy again. 10 years later, nothing has changed in me at all. I feel like I'm still alone Still no different from me in Florida.

1. Say let's break up

I wrote when I felt 'alone' in my life. I wrote down the original loneliness that piled up because I had no expectations for what was to come.

3. Letter to B
I wrote down when the person I loved changed to the person I loved and the beginning and the end with her.

4. House
When I opened the door and walked out, I felt like a completely different person. Rather, I am a completely honest 'me' at home, but I am full of worries because I think I will have to do so in the future, whether I have lived to please others by telling many lies to myself.

규현과 함께 한 '두 남자'때부터였을 것이다. 나도 모르는 새에 박재정이라는 뮤지션에 주목하기 시작했다. 우리는 보통 “좋은데 이유가 어디 있어”라고 말한다. 앞서 굳이 “모르는 새에”라고 수식한 이유다. 그러나 직업상 나는 그렇게 끝내서는 안 된다. 왜 애정하게 되었는지를 설명할 줄 알아야 한다.

무엇보다 목소리의 힘을 언급하지 않을 수 없다. 당연하다. 싱어 송라이터 아닌가. 특유의 중저음을 기반으로 하는 소리의 울림, 여기에 탁월한 가사 전달력까지, 그는 발라드 가수가 지녀야 할 기본을 단단하게 두르고 있는 음악가였다. 하나 더 있다. 나는 가수든 연주자든 그에게 가장 중요한 건 '개성'이라고 확신하는 편이다. 박재정의 음악에서는 뭐랄까, 기왕의 발라드 가수들과는 또 다른 그만의 세계가 느껴졌다. 내가 그의 음악을 꾸준히 찾아 듣기 시작한 가장 큰 이유다.

유려한 코드 보이싱이 일품인 첫 곡 '헤어지자 말해요'에서부터 그런 그의 캐릭터성이 돋보인다. 나는 처음에 이 곡이 당연히 한 남자의 절절한 반성문으로 써졌을 거라고 예상했다. 아니었다. 박재정이 직접 썼듯이 이 곡은 어쩌면 야비한 노래다. 그렇지 않나. 우리는 모두 '선한 사람 되기 욕망'의 노예다. 헤어짐이 임박한 순간에 상대방이 먼저 이별 선포하기를 원할 때가 바로 그렇다. 이런 시선의 역전 같은 게 참 마음에 든다. 이를테면 그는 결정적인 순간에 매력적으로 삐딱해지기를 두려워하지 않는 발라드 가수다.

물론 자신의 본령을 잊은 건 아니다. 이어지는 곡 'Alone'에서 우리는 그가 천상 발라드 가수임을 확인할 수 있다. 그는 이 곡에서 피할 길 없는 외로움을 노래한다. 그러나 그는 자기에게 외로움을 안겨준 이 삶을 판단하거나 비난하지 않는다. 그저 묵묵한 태도로 삶의 진상을 기록하는 쪽을 택한다. 그리하여 슬픔을 느끼는 것을 넘어 슬픔을 사는 사람처럼 노래한다. 이 과정에서 동행하는 악기는 오직 하나, 피아노뿐이다. 일종의 정면승부를 택한 셈이다. 무엇보다 그의 목소리에 반한 팬이라면 이 곡을 첫 손에 꼽을 수도 있을 것이다.

이런 측면에서 네 번째 곡 '집'은 'Alone'과 조응하고 있다고도 볼 수 있는 노래 아닐까 싶다. 박재정에 따르면 '집'은 내가 유일하게 솔직해질 수 있는 공간이다. 그런데 기실 우리 모두가 그렇지 않나. 밖으로 나가 세계와 마주하기 위해 우리 모두는 가면을 써야 한다. 이 가면, 어떻게든 벗어버리고 쉴 수 있는 공간은 집 외에는 없다. 그러므로 이 간극이 크면 클수록 외로움은 뼈에 사무칠 것이다. 이러한 주제에 고즈넉한 재즈 풍 편곡을 더해 쓸쓸한 뉘앙스를 더한 곡이기도 하다.

이 외에도 강조하고 싶은 곡은 여럿이다. 이미 라디오에서 소개한 'B에게 쓰는 편지'는 물론 나에게 쓰는 편지는 아니다. 이별의 그림자가 일렁이는 속에서 누군가를 향해 보내는 편지다. 이 곡의 핵심은 4분 20초경에 등장하는 전조에 있다. 그런데 독특하다. 이어지는 끝맺음이 일반적인 방식과는 거리가 멀다. 노랫말 역시 “나는 당신을”이 전부다. 대신 그는 이 부분에서 호흡까지 살리는 녹음을 통해 여운을 길게 남긴다. 상당한 고민을 거친 선택으로 여겨진다.

6번에 위치한 '표현하지 못했던 아쉬움'은 음악적으로든 가사적으로든 표현의 범위를 한층 넓힌 곡이다. 2010년 조부님 병간호를 했던 기억을 토대로 작곡한 것인데 '집'과 마찬가지로 재즈적인 편곡을 지향한 곡이기도 하다. 추측하건대 재즈는 현재의 그가 이상향 삼고 있는 장르일 것이다.

여기서 잠깐 강조하고 싶은 게 있다. 우리는 발라드 가수를 오해하곤 한다. 발라디어(balladeer, 발라더는 틀린 표현이다.)는 사랑 노래만 부르는 걸로 단정하는 사람, 여러분도 주위에서 봤을 것이다. 기실 발라드는 느리고 서정적인 노래를 뜻하는 단어다. '주로' 연인 간의 사랑에 대한 곡이 많을 뿐 반드시 사랑을 다뤄야 한다는 법칙 같은 건 없다. 한데 거듭 생각해보면 그렇다. 가족에 대한 사랑도 사랑 아닌가.

앨범은 '슬픔이 나를 지배할 때'로 끝을 맺는다. 과거 내가 <씨네 21>에 썼던 것처럼 그는 여전히 이런 유의 노래 안에서 자전하는 슬픔을 맴돈다. 모든 드라마가 끝난 뒤에야 찾아오는 진짜 슬픔을 기타 연주 위로 마치 속삭이듯 노래한다. 하긴 그렇다. 때로는 웅변보다 속삭임이 귓전에 더 오래 머물 수도 있는 법이니까.

곡의 기조는 '심플'에 위치한다. 아니, 기실 음반 전체가 그러하다. 박재정은 이 데뷔작에서 끝끝내 과잉을 경계하면서 노래한다. 아마도 그는 편곡 작업을 하는데 공을 많이 들였을 것이다. 음악을 하는데 있어 더하기보다 빼기가 훨씬 어렵다는 진리를 온 몸으로 경험했을 것이다. 그것이 가치 있는 문제일 경우 절대 최초로 구상한 수준에서 해결되지 않는 것과 같은 이치다. 따라서 강조하고 싶다. 이 앨범은 직관성에 호소하는 결과물이 절대 아니다. 여러 번 곱씹어 들어야 비로소 그 진가를 파악할 수 있는 쪽에 가깝다.

결론이다. 음악에 대해 말하고 글 쓰는 일을 하다 보면 음악을 넘어 다음 같은 사람을 가끔 만난다. “저 사람은 무조건 잘됐으면 좋겠다” 싶은 사람. 왠지 모르게 응원을 보내고 싶은 사람. 나에게는 뮤지션 박재정이 그런 사람이었다. 솔직히 이 1집이 엄청난 명반이라고 하는 건 거짓일 것이다. 다만, 그의 미래를 낙관할 수 있는 작품이 나와 처음부터 끝까지 미소 지으며 들을 수 있었다는 점 정도는 분명하게 말할 수 있다. 과연, 음악가가 음악으로 이렇듯 깊게 고민하면 비평가도 사람인 이상 따스한 지지를 보낼 수밖에는 없다.

정규 1집을 소개하는 박재정의 이야기

열아홉 살 플로리다는 그랬다. 늦은 나이 가족을 따라 지낸 그곳은 말도 통하지 않아 우울함을 털어놓을 방법이 없었다. 다시 돌아갈 거라고 다시 행복할 거라고 기대에 부푼 20대를 꿈꿨다. 10년이 지난 지금 내 안에 것은 전혀 바뀐 게 없다. 아직 혼자인 것 만 같다. 아직 플로리다의 나와 다를 바 없다.

1. 헤어지자 말해요
영원할 거란 약속과 강했던 다짐이 무너졌을 때 먼저 이별을 말해주길 바라는 비열한 노래입니다.

2. Alone
살아가면서 스스로 '혼자'라고 느껴질 때 글을 적어보았습니다. 앞으로 다가올 것들에 대해 기대가 전혀 없기에 쌓여만 갔던 본연의 외로움을 적었습니다.

3. B에게 쓰는 편지
사랑하는 사람이 사랑했던 사람으로 바뀌었을 때 그리고 그녀와의 처음과 끝을 적었습니다.

4. 집
집 문을 열고 나가면 완전히 다른 사람이 된 것 같았습니다. 되려 집에서는 완벽히 솔직했던 '나'인데 어쩌다 수많은 거짓말을 스스로에게 해오며 타인의 비위를 맞춰 살았는지 앞으로도 그래야만 할 것 같아 걱정만 가득합니다.

5. 나의 겨울
집을 나가지 못하는 사람이 있습니다. 용기 내어 걸어 나갔던 그의 겨울을 그렸습니다.

6. 표현하지 못했던 아쉬움
2010년, 돌아가신 조부님 병간호를 했던 그때를 담았습니다. '표현'도 있을 때 더 많이 드렸어야 했어요.

7. 망가진 내 자신을 보면서
누구든 어느 한 일에 목숨을 걸면서까지 노력하곤 합니다. 또 그 일을 지키기 위해 망가지는 일도 스스럼 없이 해오곤 하죠. 근데 이게 맞는건지 누구도 알려주지 않습니다.

안 좋았던 기억만 남아있는 이에게 다시 태어날 수 있는 기회를 준다해도 사실 다신 겪고 싶지 않을 수 있어서요.
