Machang Music & Pictures
[100 Greatest Korean Pop Albums: 43rd]

The golden age of singer-songwriter music
'The amazing achievements of Korean popular music in the 90s!
Light and Salt VOL.1 (2019 Remastered) White Color Edition

The third title in the <100 Great Korean Popular Music Albums: LP Great Album Series> jointly planned by Korea's leading LP production brand, Majang Music & Pictures Co., Ltd., Taerim Score, Melon, and Hankyoreh!
The newly remastered 'Light and Salt Vol. 1' is released as a high-quality audiophile LP.
'Light and Salt VOL. 1' is a masterpiece by those who led the revival of Korean fusion jazz, and is a representative album of 'city pop', which has recently been revived as a hipster culture, and is becoming a target of collection for 'city pop' collectors at home and abroad.

Light and Salt presents sophisticated music that still sounds good 30 years after its release, with refreshing melodies of urban sensibility, sensual beats, and a refreshing sound.
This album contains three instrumental songs that were rare at the time of its release in 1990, as well as other gem-like songs such as 'Shampoo Fairy', which became a huge hit as a song inserted into a drama, and the lyrical ballads 'After You Left' and 'Sad Doll' with their fresh emotions.

โ€œThe forefront team that introduced fusion jazz to Korea through songโ€
โ€œSo that singer-songwriter music can reach its golden age
โ€œA work that truly announced the beginning of the 1990sโ€
- Kim Bong-hwan (music columnist)

Light and Salt Vol.1

1990
Dong-A Planning / Serabel Code (first release)

Usually, when talking about 'Light and Salt' and their debut album, we start with 'Kim Hyun-sik and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter'. Kim Hyun-sik is a singer who became widely known to the public with 'Like Rain, Like Music', but he actually formed a huge band in 1986 and made music. At that time, Kim Hyun-sik formed a five-member band called 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter', and the main characters were Kim Hyun-sik (vocals), Kim Jong-jin (guitar), Jeon Tae-kwan (drums), Jang Ki-ho (bass), and Yoo Jae-ha (keyboard). Kim Jong-jin and Jeon Tae-kwan are the two familiar faces that we often think of when we think of 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter', and Jang Ki-ho is a founding member of 'Light and Salt' that we are introducing today, and he was the music director of MBC's 'I Am a Singer' and the person who called out the eliminated contestants on the show, and Yoo Jae-ha is a genius singer-songwriter who sadly passed away after leaving behind one great album containing the song 'Because I Love You'. Looking back now, even without leaving out any of the five members, it seems that this incredible team became the mother group of 'Light and Salt', to the point where one wonders if there has ever been another super band like this in our country.

After 'Kim Hyun-sik and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter' disbanded after a short two-year run, Yoo Jae-ha debuted as a solo artist and Kim Jong-jin and Jeon Tae-kwan continued the name of 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter' as a duo and created numerous hit songs. Before 'Kim Hyun-sik and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter' disbanded, Jang Ki-ho left 'Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter' with keyboardist Park Sung-sik, who had replaced Yoo Jae-ha when he left the team, and joined 'Love and Peace', which was considered a big group at the time. However, at the time, Jang Ki-ho and Park Sung-sik liked fusion jazz, while 'Love and Peace' pursued a funk sound. Jang Ki-ho and Park Sung-sik realized that they and 'Love and Peace' were somewhat different, so they left the team again and formed 'Light and Salt' with guitarist Han Kyung-hoon.

'Light and Salt' combined fusion jazz with vocals to present fresh and sophisticated music that appealed to the general public. At the time, genre music was not as active as it is now, so it would not have been possible to fill the entire album with just instrumental music. Nevertheless, 'Light and Salt' included three instrumental songs in their debut album, each of which took the lead in composing: Jang Ki-ho, Park Sung-sik, and Han Kyung-hoon. It was quite surprising at the time to include three instrumental songs in a vocal-centered pop album.

As expected, the popular response came from the vocal songs rather than the instrumental pieces. The third track on the album, "Shampoo's Fairy," was fortunate enough to be introduced on TV as the theme song for the MBC Best Theater one-act play "Shampoo's Fairy," starring Hong Hak-pyo and Chae Si-ra. Although it was only a one-act play, it was such a popular program that "Shampoo's Fairy" continued to be played on the radio even after the show ended. In addition, there are vocal songs with outstanding melodies, such as "After You Left" and "Sad Doll," so even after nearly 30 years, the first "Light and Salt" album does not sound outdated at all.

'Light and Salt' released a total of 5 regular albums and 1 unplugged album from their debut album in 1990 until 1996, and in terms of musical history, this debut album holds the most significance. Its significance can be found in the fact that it was a frontline team that introduced fusion jazz to Korea by singing it along with 'Bom Yeoreum Gaeul Gyeoul', with which it was once in the same group. In particular, it is a work that officially announced the start of the 1990s, allowing singer-songwriter music to enter its golden age. Lastly, the name 'Light and Salt' was taken from a parable in the Bible by Jang Ki-ho and Park Sung-sik, who have deep Christian beliefs, and that is why they included hymns such as 'Beautiful' in the album.

Recommended Songs

"The Shampoo Fairy"
This song was first released on the 4th album of 'Love and Peace'. After 'Kim Hyun-sik and Bom Yeoreum Gaeul Gyeoul' disbanded, Jang Ki-ho and Park Sung-sik briefly worked in 'Love and Peace' and released 'Shampoo's Fairy'. However, the two realized that the music style of 'Love and Peace' was different from their own sensibilities, so they soon left the team and formed 'Light and Salt' and released 'Shampoo's Fairy' again. As the 'Light and Salt' version of 'Shampoo's Fairy' happened to be featured in a television drama, the public began to like the 'Light and Salt' version much more than the 'Love and Peace' version.
[Please note the following when purchasing an LP.]

โ€ป Jacket/components/packaging condition
1) Please understand that minor jacket wrinkles, corner pressing, cracks, etc., other than obvious defects in the product, are not eligible for return/exchange.
2) The inner slube may crack due to contact with the disc, and this is not subject to return/exchange.
3) The disc label may not be attached smoothly due to the manufacturing process.
4) Damage to the outer packaging vinyl that does not cause a problem with the product itself is not eligible for exchange/return.

โ€ป Poor playback
1) If you use a turntable without a tonearm or weight adjustment function (mainly all-in-one models), you may experience a skipping phenomenon when playing tracks with large dynamic sound deviations. This is mostly caused by the light tonearm weight.
We do not accept returns or exchanges for playback defects caused by device issues, so we recommend playing the product on a device with adjustable tone arm.
2) Discs may not play smoothly due to static electricity and dust. This can usually be resolved by removing it with a special product.
3) If dust accumulates on the needle, playback may not be smooth.

โ€ป Disk abnormality
1) The disc surface may become warped or warped. Returns or exchanges are only possible if there is a problem with playback.
2) In order to minimize distortion of the playback range and maintain maximum consistency during repeated playback, the disc center hole diameter is sometimes manufactured small. If it does not fit the turntable spindle, the problem can be solved by adjusting the center hole using a special product, etc.
3) Occasionally, there may be minor scratches or imperfections on the disc. Returns or exchanges are only possible if there is a problem with playback.
