The band's leader, Yoon Sung-hyun, called Thornapple's music "songs of adolescence that don't end even after you turn 20." True to his words, Thornapple's debut album [I keep stuttering and forgot how to fall asleep, remastered version] contains deep insights into 'me', 'you', and 'communication', which are like teenage fevers that everyone experiences. In "Orange Hour," the obsession that unfolds inside a human being and the desire for self-destruction that only humans can have are revealed, and in "Red Peter," which is reminiscent of Franz Kafka, the conflict between the Lacanian ego and the cogito that can only be completed by the other is revealed. In "Gills," this infantile ego that is so absorbed in itself makes a selfish declaration to the other that it identified with, asking it to "die like this."

However, the self that has no choice but to live in "your crowd" despairs of itself, which continues to slip down the surface of meaning that it cannot reach in "plankton," and finally sets its "feet on reality" and reaches the "reason" to express its strong desire for communication. What is the reason why "I have such an unbearable fever"? What is the "thirst" that cannot be filled despite constant efforts for self-awareness and perfection? It is because humans are imperfect as individuals, and because without the other called "you," they cannot help but be fundamentally lonely, and because "I" am an entity that cannot be completed until I overcome that deep chasm of loneliness and reach the act of "communication." And like the lyrics of "Cicadas Cry Even When It Rains," the gesture toward communication cannot be helped, even if it is late.

This yearning for communication that must be reached no matter how frustrating it may be reminds me of THORNAPPLE, a thorn apple that must be eaten while covered in blood. Compared to the consistent theme, the musical spectrum of the album is quite diverse, and that diversity is a variation on a large content theme. From the instrumental piece "Piernada" reminiscent of post-rock, to the psychedelic atmosphere of "Orange Time" and the aggressive sound of "Red Peter", "Gills" containing the lyricism and melancholy of 90s British pop, "Salamander" with its jazzy touch and dreamy use of contrabass and synthesizer, the electronic "Cyanosis" and the gloomy trip-hop sound of "Plankton", "Reason" with its noticeable oriental melody approach, to "Cicadas Cry Even When It Rains" with its refreshing guitar sound and unique chorus melody, Yoon Sung-hyun answers the question about this diversity by saying, "Various genre characteristics are just materials for creating good music."

Nevertheless, the sound has a sense of unity, and it is said that bassist Shim Jae-hyun, who was in charge of mixing and programming the album, contributed greatly. In addition, the unique lyrics and vocals create Thornapple’s unique originality. Words that seem to have been drawn from a deep well in the depths of an individual’s abyss and sentences that even feel like a kind of bizarre literary quality are given life by Yoon Seong-hyun’s neutral yet genuine vocals. The experimental guitar sound that sometimes creates a collapsing texture and sometimes overwhelms with an expanding sense of space is also excellent. The ensemble of the stable rhythm part goes without saying. Another strength of this album is the power of the beautiful melody. All the songs have excellent melodies, so they would be colorless even if they were all single cuts. It is sure to be a great joy for the listener to indulge in the high-quality melodies that were carefully selected.

당신이 베어 물 수밖에 없는 가시 돋친 사과 '쏜애플'
밴드의 리더인 윤성현은 쏜애플의 음악을 '20세가 넘어서도 끝나지 않는 사춘기의 노래'라고 했다. 그 말처럼 쏜애플의 데뷔앨범 [난 자꾸 말을 더듬고 잠드는 법도 잊었네 리마스터 버전]에는 누구나 겪게 되는 10대의 열병과도 같은 '나'와, '너' 그리고 '소통'에 대한 농밀한 통찰이 담겨있다. "오렌지의 시간"에서는 한 인간의 내부에서 펼쳐지는 강박과 인간만이 가질 수 있는 자기 파괴의 욕구를, 프란츠 카프카 (Franz Kafka)가 연상되는 제목의 "빨간 피터"에서는 타자에 의해서만 완성 될 수 있는 라캉적 자아와 코기토의 충돌을 드러낸다. 이렇게 자신에게만 몰두하는 유아적 자아는 "아가미"에서 자신과 동일시했던 타자에게 '차라리 이대로 죽어' 달라는 이기적 선고를 내린다.

하지만 "너의 무리"속에서 살아 갈 수밖에 없는 자아는 "플랑크톤"에서 닿을 수 없는 의미의 표면을 계속해서 미끄러져 내리는 자신에게 절망하다 비로소 '현실에 발'을 딛고 "이유"에 이르러 소통에의 강렬한 욕망을 표현한다. '내가 이리 견딜 수 없게 열이 심하게 나는 까닭'은 무엇인가. 끊임없는 자기 인식과 완성의 노력에도 채워지지 않는 '목마름'은 무엇인가. 그것은 인간이 한 개체로서는 불완전한 까닭이요, '너' 라는 타자가 없이는 근본적으로 외로울 수밖에 없기 때문이며, '나'는 그 깊은 고독의 골을 넘어 '소통'의 행위에 닿기 전에는 완성 될 수 없는 존재이기 때문이다. 그리고 "매미는 비가 와도 운다"의 노랫말처럼 그 소통에의 몸짓은 비록 늦었을 지라도 행할 수밖에 없다.

이처럼 아무리 좌절 될 지라도 닿아야만 하는 소통에 대한 갈망은 피투성이가 되면서도 베어 먹을 수밖에 없는 가시사과 THORNAPPLE을 연상케 한다. 일관된 주제의식에 비해 앨범의 음악적 스펙트럼은 꽤나 다양하며 그 다양성은 커다란 내용적 주제에 대한 변주다. 포스트 록을 연상케 하는 연주곡 "피어나다"부터 싸이키델릭한 분위기의 "오렌지의 시간"과 공격적인 사운드의 "빨간 피터', 90년대 브리티쉬 팝의 서정과 우울을 담은 "아가미", 재즈적인 터치가 느껴지는 콘트라베이스와 몽환적인 신서사이저의 사용이 돋보이는 "도롱뇽", 일렉트로닉한 "청색증"과 음울한 트립합 사운드의 "플랑크톤", 동양적인 멜로디 어프로치가 눈에 띄는 "이유", 청량감 있는 기타 사운드와 독특한 후렴구 멜로디가 돋보이는 "매미는 비가 와도 운다"까지 윤성현은 이러한 다양성에 대한 물음에 '다양한 장르적 특성은 좋은 음악을 탄생시키기 위한 질료일 뿐' 이라고 답한다.

그럼에도 사운드가 일종의 통일감을 가지게 된 점에는 앨범의 믹싱과 프로그래밍을 담당한 베이시스트 심재현의 기여도가 컸다고 하겠다. 더불어 개성있는 노랫말과 보컬은 쏜애플만의 오리지널리티를 생성한다. 개인이 가진 심연 속에 있는 깊은 우물에서 길어 올린 듯한 단어들과 일종의 기괴한 문학성마저 느껴지는 문장들은 중성적이면서도 진정성 있는 윤성현의 보컬로 인해 생명력을 얻는다. 때로는 무너지는 텍스쳐를 만들어내고, 때로는 확장되는 공간감으로 압도하는 실험적 기타사운드 또한 일품이다. 안정적인 리듬파트의 앙상블은 두 말 할 나위가 없다. 한 가지 더 이 앨범의 강점을 말하자면, 수려한 멜로디가 가지고 있는 힘의 측면을 들 수 있겠다. 전 곡 모두 훌륭한 멜로디를 가지고 있어 모두 싱글 컷을 해도 무색할 지경이다. 이토록 고심하여 뽑아낸 양질의 멜로디를 탐닉하는 것은 청자의 큰 기쁨임에 틀림없다.
