It is said that an artist exists to leave behind a masterpiece. To achieve a goal that is like a spring night's dream, or perhaps even a fantasy, they sometimes spend an entire lifetime cramming themselves into the agony of creation.
It is fortunate if one can finally produce even a single masterpiece after enduring hardship and agony. For even if one runs wild with a瘋狂 obsession for a masterpiece, one's flickering creative power often fails to reach it, leaving only the name 'forgotten artist' behind.
However, a very small minority of artists creates masterpieces merely for the sake of play. This was the case with the three brothers from Heukseok-dong who produced Korean rock masterpieces such as "Not Yet," "Laying a Silk Carpet in My Heart," and "What Should I Do?" They are Kim Chang-wan, Kim Chang-hoon, and Kim Chang-ik, known as "Sanulim."

As implied by the band name 'Mui' (meaning 'no different from usual'), formed to participate in the 1st MBC University Song Festival, the beginning of creative activity for these three brothers was not a desperate cry pouring all their might toward a masterpiece, but merely a free-spirited game between brothers no different from usual.
As a result, this became Sanulim's unique songwriting style, distinct from any rock music trends in the East or West. Over the course of 13 albums, they produced countless masterpieces of Korean rock, including 'It Was Probably Late Summer', 'Naughty Boy', 'Don't Go', 'Monologue', 'Reminiscence', 'The Meaning of You', 'Goodbye', and 'Let's Ride a Motorcycle with a Guitar'.

Lyrics akin to poetry, such as "A single word becomes a song and a poem; I will lay a silk carpet in my heart and sing for you (Laying a silk carpet in my heart)." and "Sorrow blooms as cosmos at a small train station, and you who brushed past are a fragrant breeze (The Meaning of You)," became a decisive device that particularly established the archetype of "Korean Rock" and "Sanulim Rock."

Just as musicians who created so-called 'masterpieces' were loved across all generations, the same was true for Sanulim. From the Baby Boomer generation who spent their youth with Sanulim when they released 'Not Yet' in 1977, to Generation X who spent their adolescence listening to 'Reminiscence,' and even the Millennials and Gen Z who grew up listening to children's songs like 'The Mischievous Boy' and 'Grandfather Mountain.' Currently in South Korea, it is actually harder to find someone who doesn't know Sanulim.

Sanulim, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2027, is conducting the "Sanulim 50th Anniversary Project," in which junior musicians reinterpret and pay tribute to 50 songs by Sanulim, Kim Chang-wan, and Kim Chang-hoon under the direction of bassist Kim Chang-hoon.
The second studio album, [Sanulim 50th Anniversary Studio Album Vol. 2], featured songs written and composed by Kim Chang-hoon, a natural-born songwriter and rocker who dominated the era.

예술가는 걸작 한 점을 남기기 위해 존재한다고 한다. 그 봄밤의 꿈과도 같은, 어쩌면 공상과도 같은 목표를 이루기 위해 창작의 고통 속에 스스로를 욱여넣은 채 한세월을 보내기도 한다.
인고와 고뇌 끝에 기어코 한점의 걸작이라도 만들어낼 수 있다면 다행이다. 걸작을 향한 광기 어린 집착으로 날뛰어본다고 한들, 명멸하는 창작력이 걸작에는 끝내 이르지 못한 채 '잊혀진 예술가'라는 이름만이 남게 되곤 하니까.
그러나, 극소수의 예술가 부류는 그저 유희로서 걸작을 만들어내기도 한다. '아니 벌써', '내 마음에 주단을 깔고', '나 어떡해'와 같은 한국 록의 걸작을 만들어낸 흑석동의 삼 형제가 그러했다. '산울림'이라는 이름으로 불린 김창완, 김창훈, 김창익이다.

제1회 MBC 대학가요제 참가를 위해 결성한 '무이(無異, 평소와 다름없음)'라는 밴드 이름에 내포된 것처럼, 이들 삼 형제에게 창작활동의 시작은 걸작을 향한 온 힘을 다한 절규 같은 것이 아니라 평소와 다를 것 없는 형제간의 자유분방한 유희에 불과했다.
결과적으로 이는, 동서양을 막론한 그 어떠한 록 음악의 성향과도 차별된 산울림만의 독창적인 작법이 됐다, 무려 13집에 이르는 동안 '아마 늦은 여름이었을 거야', '개구쟁이', '가지 마오', '독백', '회상', '너의 의미', '안녕', '기타로 오토바이를 타자'를 비롯한 한국 록의 걸작들을 무수히 만들어냈다.

'한마디 말이 노래가 되고 시가 되고 내 마음에 주단을 깔고 그댈 위해 노래 부르리(내 마음에 주단을 깔고)'. '슬픔은 간이역의 코스모스로 피고 스쳐 불어온 넌 향긋한 바람(너의 의미)', 시어와도 같은 가사들은 특히 '한국 록'이자 '산울림 록'의 전형성을 만들어내는 결정적 장치가 됐다.

소위 '걸작'을 만들어낸 뮤지션들이 전 세대를 아울러 사랑받았듯, 산울림도 그러했다. 1977년, '아니 벌써'를 발표한 산울림과 함께 청년기를 보낸 베이비붐 세대, '회상'을 들으며 청소년기를 보낸 X세대, 그리고 '개구쟁이', '산 할아버지'를 동요로 듣고 자란 밀레니얼 세대와 Z세대까지. 현재 대한민국에선 '산울림'을 모르는 인구를 찾는 것이 더 어려울 정도다.

오는 2027년, 결성 50주년을 맞는 산울림은 베이시스트 김창훈의 지휘로 산울림과 김창완, 김창훈의 작품 50곡을 후배 뮤지션들이 재해석해 트리뷰트 하는 〈산울림 50주년 기념 프로젝트〉를 진행하고 있다.
그 두 번째 정규앨범인 [산울림 50주년 기념 정규앨범 Vol. 2]에는 타고난 송라이터이자 로커로 시대를 풍미한 김창훈의 작사, 작곡곡들이 실렸다.
