[Sanulim 50th Anniversary Studio Album Vol. 3]

A patchwork where the sensibilities of YB and Daybreak, A-Wol and Seol, and Kotoba and Jeong Seo-ju coexist. An unprecedentedly diverse compilation has been released. Woven together is the unique crochet hook known as Sanullim. It is a feast like a "fresh old restaurant," unfolding as the scent of classics crafted long ago with uncluttered melodies meets new-century compositional techniques. Where else could one experience such a performance?

The grand journey of the Sanulim 50th Anniversary Remake Project, a series of singles that set sail in September 2023, has now reached its halfway point. Led by Sanulim's bassist and singer-songwriter Kim Chang-hoon, this project proceeded at a pace of "conquering" nearly one song per month. Before we knew it, 2027, the year marking Sanulim's 50th debut anniversary, has rapidly approached next year.
[Sanulim 50th Anniversary Studio Album Vol. 3], which was released this time by gathering ten songs from the middle of a large-scale project currently in progress, appeared nearly a year after the release of [โ€ฆ Vol. 2]. It contains ten songs, from the twenty-first to the thirty-threeth tracks that were previously released as singles.
The spectrum of the '3rd Album' that has arrived here is as vast and expansive as ever. Under the direction of Captain Kim Chang-hoon, diverse genres traversing the universe of popular musicโ€”from Kotoba's math rock to Matry's a cappella, YB's hard rock, and Jeong Seo-ju's trot crossoverโ€”intersect and explode here like a cosmic show.

One cannot help but first mention YBโ€™s "Heukseok-dong," a masterpiece spanning 6 minutes and 53 seconds. Featured on Kim Chang-hoonโ€™s fourth solo album, this song portrays a wistful longing for Heukseok-dong in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, the neighborhood that served as the roots of Sanulim. From the heavy, ultra-low frequency riffs of a Drop A-tuned 7-string guitar to Yoon Do-hyunโ€™s screams, YB builds the music up to a climax as if constructing a building, charging forward. They mobilize all available heavy equipment to reconstruct this village of black stones in their own unique way.
Opposite the rough and heavy roar of YB, Aktoongโ€™s "Choya" and Mateuriโ€™s "Sanhalabeoji"โ€”as refreshing as sherbetโ€”lurk as if it were nothing out of the ordinary. This world of contradictory coexistence is precisely the territory of [Sanulim 50th Anniversary Studio Album Vol. 3]. Mateuriโ€™s "Sanhalabeoji" is like a lemon-scented dessert casually tossed in the middle of the album. The fresh and tangy a cappella amplifies the original songโ€™s acidity, making it explode even more. It resembles a golden traditional yakgwa reinterpreted as a pastel-colored macaron. The refreshing coolness offered by Aktoongโ€™s "Choya" is also formidable. They transformed the original song, featured on Kim Chang-wanโ€™s first album in 1983, into a modern folk track reminiscent of the opening of a youth film.
Daybreak has reimagined "Reminiscence," one of Sanulim's four greatest ballads. It appears to replace the neighborhood alleyways with downtown boulevards, while heightening the intensity of solitude.

If Broken Valentine, Transfiction, and Kotoba boil up hot rock alongside YB, Mateuri and Aktoong take charge of the refreshing cold bath with Daybreak. Following this, A-Wol and Seol cast a shadow with chic funkiness, while Jung Seo-ju sprinkles a wistful mist on the final path with Korean-style ballads. After listening to the ten songs, it feels as if you have walked along a unique trail where rocky ground stimulates your feet. It refreshes your mind, much like a pleasant trek.

The music industry is currently flooded with remakes. A closer look reveals a landscape dominated by mere desserts. Taking advantage of the recent trend of rediscovering ballads and pop-rock from the late 20th and early 20th centuries, projects aiming for profit by simply remodeling tracks and adding viral marketing are everywhere. Amidst this wave, the Sanulim 50th Anniversary Project stands tall without jumping on the bandwagon. It pursues "remakes with meaning" rather than "remakes that make money." This is due to the determination of perfumer Kim Chang-hoon, who, as the project leader and overall producer, personally handles everything from song selection to the selection and recruitment of remake musicians and cover artists. What drives himโ€”who still heads out at dawn to catch good and fresh music even half a century laterโ€”is not sugar coating, but the imperative. It is the imperative to pursue good art, not the sugar coating that packages commercially viable music.
